Conociendo la selva / Getting to know the jungle
Les conté que había llegado a Inírida huyendo, Nadando contra la corriente. Desde el principio las cosas tomaron un ritmo monótono; me costaba entender por qué si Inírida estaba en medio de la selva, la selva no vivía dentro de la gente; no sentía que tuvieran motivos para hablar del mundo que los rodeaba; de los inmensos ríos que se alargan como caminos de espejos y que cuando se cruzan, hacen una línea en el medio como si se tomaran de la mano hasta que se confunden en uno; de la vegetación exuberante y original que encerraba al pueblo circularmente como si fuera una especie de coliseo vegetal; sentía que el pueblo vivía encerrado en el espacio que le robaron a la selva, donde ahora tienen techos, escuelas, hospital, aeropuerto y cada vez más concreto.
I told them that I had come to Inírida on the run, swimming against the current. From the beginning things took on a monotonous rhythm; it was hard for me to understand why, if Inírida was in the middle of the jungle, the jungle did not live inside the people; I did not feel that they had any reason to talk about the world around them; about the immense rivers that lengthen like mirrored paths and when they cross, they make a line in the middle as if they were holding hands until they merge into one; of the exuberant and original vegetation that enclosed the town circularly as if it were a kind of vegetable coliseum; I felt that the town lived enclosed in the space they stole from the jungle, where now they have roofs, schools, hospital, airport and more and more concrete.

Me estaba enfermando. En la mañana me distraía en los colegios contándoles cuentos a los niños; por la tarde atendía más niños, pero en la biblioteca; como en Inírida la noche es una gallina, a las 6 me encerraba con la oscuridad, en un hotel donde estuve 6 meses engordando como un cochino; había llegado con menos de 50 kilos, incluyendo maleta y esperanzas, y a los 60 días tenía 15 kilos extras, una buena cantidad de libros leídos y el desespero de mis diluvios que me seguían matando.
Hasta que un día me dediqué a conocer al pueblo y de eso quiero hablarles es esta crónica.
I was getting sick. In the morning I distracted myself in the schools telling stories to the children; in the afternoon I attended more children, but in the library; as in Inírida the night is a hen, at 6 o'clock I locked myself with the darkness, in a hotel where I spent 6 months getting fat like a pig; I had arrived with less than 50 kilos, including suitcase and hopes, and after 60 days I had 15 extra kilos, a good amount of books read and the desperation of my deluges that kept killing me.
Until one day I dedicated myself to get to know the people and that is what I want to talk about in this chronicle.

En los patios de las casas empieza el cielo en Inírida porque hacia el cielo crecen los manacales y hasta allá llegan los indígenas en busca de la preciada semilla para preparar la manaca, que se la sirven con mañoco, almidón o sola; y ya hay quienes la prefieren con azúcar, será porque en la variedad se van multiplicando los gustos.
También es gustoso ver en el cielo las bandadas de pájaros; las guacamayas que chispean las nubes de colores o formando sus propios arcoíris; y por las noches, la luna estampada como una flor nocturna.
In the patios of the houses begins the sky in Inírida because towards the sky grow the manacales and up to there the natives arrive in search of the precious seed to prepare the manaca, which is served with mañoco, starch or alone; and there are already those who prefer it with sugar, it will be because in the variety the tastes are multiplying.
It is also pleasing to see in the sky the flocks of birds; the macaws that sparkle the clouds of colors or forming their own rainbows; and at night, the moon stamped like a night flower.

Además de los manacales encontrará usted un árbol muy noble porque le ofrece las frutas para el desayuno o para la cena, sin quitarnos un peso del bolsillo, ni unito, como dicen los colombianos; ese bendito árbol es el guayabo, que da aquellas frutas chiquitas, como el piquito que pone la novia cuando es tímida para darte besos; pero grandísimas en dulzura, más dulce que los besos de la misma novia cuando está de feria; y como el hambre siempre está arañándole lo huesos a uno, usted camine por los barrios, estire la mano y agarre guayabas que si aguanta hambre es por bobo.
Besides the manacales there is a very noble tree because it offers one fruits for breakfast or for dinner, without taking a peso out of one's pocket, not a single one, as the Colombians say; that blessed tree is the guayabo, which gives those small fruits, like the piquito that the bride puts when she is shy to give you kisses; but very big in sweetness, sweeter than the kisses of the bride herself when she is at the fair; and as hunger always scrapes one's bones, one walks through the neighborhoods, stretches out one's hand and grabs guavas, because if one endures hunger it is because one is a fool.

Vaya también a los caños, en bicicleta o a pie que igual se gana, pero deje que la selva lo invada, que se le meta por los ojos, que se le acomode en los oídos, que lo sacuda desde dentro; y si después de eso usted sigue siendo el mismo, no aprendió nada; vuelva y adéntrese, encuentre su selva interior, ese rugido de pájaro fulminante, de tigre volador, reconózcase en el silencio de esa bulla; encuentre su bulla y únala a ese silencio; nada como la selva para encontrarnos y empezar a ver el mundo en su tejido biológico, en su entramado arrollador; en su diversidad de vida.
Go also to the lagoons, by bicycle or on foot, but let the jungle invade you, let it get into your eyes, let it settle in your ears, let it shake you inside; and if afterwards you remain the same, you have learned nothing; go back and go deeper, find your inner jungle, that roar of a fulminating bird, of a flying tiger, recognize yourself in the silence of that noise; find your noise and join it to that silence; nothing like the jungle to find ourselves and begin to see the world in its biological fabric, in its overwhelming framework; in its diversity of life.
Y si tiene cómo vaya a las comunidades de los ríos, que lo reciben como al hermano que hubiesen estado esperando, pero no les lleve espejos para cambiárselos por mañoco, moqueao o cazabe, que para espejos tienen al río que bien filoso se pone cuando se pica; lléveles anzuelos, ropa, jabón, aquello necesario y que le cuesta conseguir; aprenda de su generosidad y sobre todo, vea cómo trabajan construyendo sus artesanías; se parten duro el cerebro y luego la gente quiere comprarle su mercancía a precio de gallina flaca. Si no les va a dar tampoco les quite.
Si usted es de Colombia, vaya a Inírida; si usted es del mundo, vaya a Inírida; si le gusta la selva, ¡vaya!, que si con mucho se vive, con poco también, y mucho es lo que va a encontrar para alimentar el espíritu, se lo digo yo, que duré más de un año con el cuello en la selva y en ella encontré el lugar para vaciar mis diluvios y para volver a llenar mi espíritu.
And if you have the means, go to the riverside communities, who welcome you as the brother they were waiting for, but do not take them mirrors to exchange them for mañoco, moqueao or cazabe, because for mirrors they have the river, which is very sharp when it is swollen; take them hooks, clothes, soap, the necessary things that are hard to get; learn from their generosity and above all, see how they work building their crafts; they work hard and then people want to buy their products at the price of a skinny hen. If you are not going to give to them, don't take from them either.
If you are from Colombia, go to Inírida; if you are from the world, go to Inírida; if you like the jungle, visit it, because if you can live with much, you can also live with little, and you will find much to feed your spirit, I tell you, I spent more than a year with my neck in the jungle and in it I found the place to empty my alluvium and fill my spirit again.
