[ENG] Greetings, Hive! In the last months I have been working on a team design project, it has been a very positive experience. These are concrete dumbbells for exercising, the first pieces in a series of objects for home.

¡Saludos, Hive! En los últimos meses he trabajado en un proyecto de diseño en equipo, ha sido una experiencia muy positiva. Son mancuernas de concreto para ejercitarse, primeras piezas de una serie de objetos para el hogar.
[ENG] Physical and sports activity has been very important in my life, from an early age I participated in baseball, swimming, futsal and other sports competitions. I started strength exercises when I was 16 years old, especially I did calisthenics, that is, exercises with your own body weight, my dad always told me that it was not good to lift weights before the age of 20.
[ESP] La actividad física y deportiva ha sido muy importante en mi vida, desde temprana edad participaba en competencias de béisbol, natación, fútbol sala y otros deportes. Los ejercicios de fuerza los inicié a los 16 años, sobre todo hacía calistenia, es decir, ejercicios con el propio peso corporal, mi papá siempre me decía que no era bueno levantar pesas antes de los 20 años.
[ENG] I am 28 years old, I still like sports activity, it seems to me to be a healthy and energizing practice. I do physical activity regularly, like riding my bike and playing basketball, also, I incorporate weight training into my routines, both for leg exercises and for the upper body.
I have been working for a long time designing products, mainly concrete, about 3 years ago I wrote the idea in a notebook to build concrete dumbbells.
[ESP] Tengo 28 años, me sigue gustando la actividad deportiva, me parece una práctica saludable y energizante. Realizo actividad física regularmente, como andar en bicicleta y jugar baloncesto, también, incorporo ejercicios con pesas en mis rutinas, tanto para ejercicios de piernas como para la parte superior del cuerpo.
Desde hace tiempo que trabajo diseñando productos, principalmente de concreto, hace unos 3 años escribí la idea en cuaderno de construir unas mancuernas de concreto.
[ENG] In mid-April I was playing soccer with a friend, @luis.colina212, and I told him about the idea of building these objects. We were working on other projects, but this was a bigger scale than usual, plus we would have to cut reused wood and design the formwork system, and that sounded great.
[ESP] A mediados de abril jugaba fútbol con un amigo, @ luis.colina212, y le comenté la idea de construir estos objetos. Estábamos trabajando en otros proyectos, pero esta era una escala mayor a la usual, además, tendríamos que cortar maderas reutilizadas y diseñar el sistema del encofrado, y eso sonaba genial.
[ENG] The first stage consisted of sketching the object, thinking about its approximate measurements. The hexagon is a balanced, symmetrical figure, I consider it as an intermediate between the square and the circle, flat faces so that it does not roll like cylinders and with less distance between the vertices than the square.
In squared sheets, I was trying various options for a logo, since we wanted to print a symbol on the sides to see how the technique with foami worked.
[ESP] La primera etapa consistió en bocetear el objeto, pensando en sus medidas aproximadas. El hexágono es una figura simétrica, equilibrada, yo la considero como un intermedio entre el cuadrado y el círculo, caras planas para que no ruede como los cilindros y con menos distancia entre los vértices que el cuadrado.
En hojas cuadriculadas estuve probando varias opciones para un logo, ya que queríamos imprimirle algún símbolo a los lados para ver como funcionaba la técnica con foami.
[ENG] A few months ago I saw information about brand logos, there was the history of the Bluetooth logo, apparently it is a Viking rune that represents a character that had two dead teeth and they looked blue. I googled about runes and found a list of various runes with their meanings (Link here: Rune List). I sent the list to partner Luis and asked him his favorites, in a short time we agreed that the best, for the first pair, would be this rune, the one of 'Mental Power'.
[ESP] Hace unos meses vi una información sobre logos de marcas, allí aparecía la historia del logo del Bluetooth, al parecer es una runa vikinga que representa un personaje que tenía dos dientes muertos y se le veían azules. Busqué en Google acerca de las runas y encontré una lista de varias runas con sus significados (Aquí el enlace: Lista de runas). Le envié la lista al socio Luis y le pregunté sus preferidas, en poco tiempo coincidimos en que la mejor, para el primer par, sería esta runa, la de 'Poder Mental'.
[ENG] I believe that mental power is one of the greatest strengths that we can have as humans, for me it is about putting self-improvement as a priority, that is why it has been a symbol that motivates us and helps us to maintain focus, invites us to planning, thinking and being efficient. Many times our impediments are caused by ourselves, exercising mental power is training willpower and the ability to solve problems at the same time (This is the link to one of the images we get: Rune of mental power).
Mental power is necessary in sports, the best performances always come from a strong will, often driven by a spiritual sense.
[ESP] Creo que el poder mental es una de las mayores fortalezas que podemos tener como humanos, para mí se trata de poner la superación personal como una prioridad, por eso ha sido un símbolo que nos motiva y nos ayuda a mantener el enfoque, nos invita a planificar, a pensar y ser eficientes. Muchas veces nuestros impedimentos los causamos nosotros mismos, ejercitar el poder mental es entrenar la fuerza de voluntad y la capacidad de resolver problemas al mismo tiempo (Este es el enlace a una de las imágenes que conseguimos: Runa de poder mental).
El poder mental es necesario en los deportes, los mejores desempeños siempre provienen de una voluntad fuerte, muchas veces impulsada por un sentido espiritual.
[ENG] I found the woods in a garbage can a long time ago, they were cargo pallets, I put them in my uncle's truck and disassembled them when I got home. To make the formwork we use basic carpentry tools, such as hacksaw, hammers, drill, screwdrivers and sandpaper.
[ESP] Las maderas las encontré en un basurero hace mucho tiempo, eran unas paletas de carga, las subí a la camioneta de mi tío y las desarmé al llegar a la casa. Para realizar el encofrado utilizamos herramientas básicas de carpintería, como la segueta, martillos, taladro, destornilladores y lijas.
[ENG] From the beginning we tried to make all the measurements and cuts very precisely, we even had to repeat several pieces at the beginning, while we developed the technique.
Most of the photographs of the process were taken with Luis's cell phone, a Redmi 9.
[ESP] Desde el inicio intentamos que todas las medidas y cortes se hicieran con mucha precisión, incluso tuvimos que repetir varias piezas al inicio, mientras desarrollábamos la técnica.
La mayoría de las fotografías del proceso las realizamos con el celular de Luis, un Redmi 9.
[ENG] The part that took us the most time was to make the cuts with angles, there were several pieces that had to be assembled to complete the hexagonal shape.
[ESP] La parte que más nos tomó tiempo fue realizar los cortes con ángulos, eran varias piezas las que tenían que ensamblarse para poder completar la forma hexagonal.
[ENG] Another factor that determined the time of the project was the location of the workshop, which is an hour's walk from where I live, it was a considerable time and effort.
Every part we screwed on felt like an achievement, watching the machine form from loose, rough pieces of wood to a clear and precise system.
[ESP] Otro factor que determinó el tiempo del proyecto fue la ubicación del taller, el cual queda a una hora caminando desde donde vivo, fue un tiempo y esfuerzo considerables.
Cada pieza que atornillamos se sentía como un logro, ver la máquina formarse desde los pedazos de madera sueltos y toscos, hasta ser un sistema claro y preciso.
[ENG] Every workday feels like a triumph when you do something you like, with interest and commitment.
[ESP] Cada día de trabajo se siente como un triunfo cuando uno hace algo que le gusta, con interés y empeño.
[ENG] There were 3 sizes of screws, to differentiate them we created a code.
Once we finished the formwork of the base, we put a layer of foam to see how the concrete would adopt that texture.
[ESP] Habían 3 medidas de tornillos, para diferenciarlos creamos un código.
Una vez que terminamos el encofrado de la base le pusimos una capa de foami para ver como el concreto adoptaría esa textura.
[ENG] In my apartment, the washing machine is a bit damaged, we have to put something on it to make it work well, so the first test we carried out was also a functional object.
We made a mix with cement, sand and stones which we call the McFlurry consistency.
[ESP] En mi apartamento la lavadora está un poco dañada, hay que ponerle algo pesado encima para que funcione bien, así que la primera prueba que realizamos, fue además un objeto funcional.
Hicimos una mezcla con cemento, arena y piedras a la que llamamos consistencia McFlurry.
[ENG] We waited a full week for it to dry and it turned out excellent, with a piece of steel rod I made a makeshift handle for it, after that we sanded it. It was a good test to calculate the weight, which was very close to 13lbs.
[ESP] Esperamos una semana completa para que se secara y resultó excelente, con un pedazo de cabilla le hice una asa improvisada, luego de eso la lijamos. Fue una buena prueba para calcular el peso, que fue muy cercano a los 6Kg.
[ENG] While that test was drying we were working on the other part of the machine, the one that would hold the tube and align the entire system. For that we used a larger piece of wood, from a piece left over from the ladder in Luis's house. All the woods we sand and mark with serials.
[ESP] Mientras esa prueba secaba estuvimos trabajando en la otra parte de la máquina, la que sostendría el tubo y alinearía todo el sistema. Para eso utilizamos una madera más grande, proveniente de un pedazo sobrante de escalera de la casa de Luis. Todas las maderas las lijamos y marcamos con seriales.
[ENG] The small drill we used for the woods got very hot, we could only use it for 5 minutes at a time, after that we had to put it in the shade to cool down.
For several days we tried to figure out how to open holes in the steel tube, but we were lucky that my uncle offered us his drill. At first I didn't think it would work, I was already asking about blacksmiths in the area, but then we put a bigger wick on the drill in the photo, which is brutal, and it worked.
[ESP] El taladro pequeño que utilizamos para las maderas se calentaba mucho, podíamos usarlo solo por 5 minutos seguidos, luego de eso había que ponerlo a la sombra a enfriar.
Por varios días intentamos descifrar la manera de abrirle huecos al tubo de acero, pero tuvimos la suerte de que mi tío nos ofreció su taladro. Al principio no creí que funcionaría, ya estaba preguntando por herreros en la zona, pero entonces le pusimos una mecha más grande al taladro de la foto, que es brutal, y funcionó.
[ENG] The rebar on the inside of the concrete would serve several purposes, clearly to increase the strength of the concrete, in addition, it would add a good amount of weight to both sides, balanced.
[ESP] Las cabillas en el interior del concreto servirían con varios propósitos, claramente para aumentar la resistencia del concreto, además, añadiría una buena cantidad de peso a ambos lados, equilibrádamente.
[ENG] Teamwork is something very valuable, many times mental blocks occur, where another person could find the solution more quickly.
The pipe was also reused, Luis brought them, previously they were part of the facilities of a house.
[ESP] El trabajo en equipo es algo muy valioso, muchas veces suceden bloqueos mentales, en donde otra persona podría hallar la solución más rápidamente.
La tubería también fue reutilizada, las trajo Luis, anteriormente eran parte de las instalaciones de una casa.
[ENG] Luis lives as far from the workshop as I do, and he even walks a lot more because he walks his dogs every day, he has to walk around 18mi a day. He is interested in the subjects of design and architecture.
[ESP] Luis vive tan lejos del taller como yo, e incluso camina mucho más porque todos los días pasea a sus perros, debe caminar alrededor de 30Km al día. Le interesan los temas de diseño y arquitectura.
[ENG] In the mold the piece with the shape of the rune had to be turned upside down, like in a mirror, then it would be marked in the concrete in the right direction.
[ESP] En el molde la pieza con la forma de la runa debía ponerse al revés, como en un espejo, entonces así se marcaría en el concreto en la dirección correcta.
[ENG] We did the 'McFlurry' mix again and emptied the first part of the dumbbell, we waited 7 days to set and it turned out great, it worked as planned.
[ESP] Volvimos a realizar la mezcla 'McFlurry' y vaciamos la primera parte de la mancuerna, esperamos 7 días de fraguado y resultó genial, funcionó como lo planeamos.
[ENG] Then we twist the system and place the second part of the dumbbell. We liked to call them the Vikings, already at that time when loading the machine next to the dumbbell, it was noticeable that it was heavy, in addition, the whole machine seems to me a medieval artifact, quite rustic.
[ESP] Luego giramos el sistema y colocamos la segunda parte de la mancuerna. Nos gustó llamarlas las vikingas, ya en ese momento al cargar la máquina junto a la mancuerna, se notaba que pesaba bastante, además, toda la máquina me parece un artefacto medieval, bastante rústica.
[ENG] At this point the object fulfilled its function, in fact, we did several repetitions of bicep and shoulder exercises just as we took it out of the mold, but for it to meet our expectations as a design object, several processes were missing.
[ESP] A este punto ya el objeto cumplía su función, de hecho, hicimos varias repeticiones de ejercicios de bicep y hombros justo cuando la sacamos del molde, pero para que cumpliera nuestras expectativas de objeto de diseño faltaban varios procesos.
[ENG] Another very useful tool was the electric sander, we passed it several times on all sides until it was as smooth to the touch, we also cleaned the galvanized steel tube and sanded the engraving of the rune.
[ESP] Otra herramienta muy útil fue la lijadora eléctrica, le pasamos varias veces a todos los lados hasta que quedó como bien lisa al tacto, también limpiamos el tubo de acero galvanizado y lijamos el grabado de la runa.
[ENG] We make two equal 27,1lbs dumbbells. At the end of the project we meet in the apartment and, using various lamps, we do a product photography session. For these photos we used the camera my brother lent me, a Canon PowerShot SX 150 IS.
[ESP] Realizamos dos mancuernas iguales de 12,3Kg. Al final del proyecto nos reunimos en el apartamento y, utilizando varias lamparas, realizamos una sesión de fotografías de producto. Para estas fotos utilizamos la cámara que me prestó mi hermano, una Canon PowerShot SX 150 IS.
[ENG] The last step was the image editing process, for that I used Adobe Lightroom and Adobe PhotoShop, it seems to me that the pieces in these images look good, it is a job that has made me feel very good, for now I have the dumbbells here in the apartment and when I see them I want to do the exercise routines, these are a motivation.
[ESP] El último paso fue el proceso de edición de imágenes, para eso usé Adobe Lightroom y Adobe PhotoShop, me parece que se ven bien las piezas en estas imágenes, es un trabajo que me ha hecho sentir muy bien, por ahora tengo las mancuernas aquí en el apartamento y cuando las veo quiero hacer las rutinas de ejercicio, son una motivación.
[ENG] Our next project is concrete pots, it is also a design challenge with several mechanisms to solve and it will surely be a fun process.
