Architectural Photography: magnificent Benedictine Abbey of Tyniec

Hi there my Hivean friends and followers!

Last week, I posted this article about the mysterious Camaldolese Monastery in Krakow and today, I am here to show you another impressive monastery complex from Poland. This time, however, I am posting it into the Architecture & Design Community because I haven´t posted anything there for a long time, even though many of my posts actually are about architecture.

Now the architectural gem that this post will be about is called the Benedictine Abbey of Tyniec and it´s a truly spectacular landmark found just outside of Krakow, Poland. It´s located some 12 km (7 mi) southwest of the Krakow historic center and there are several ways of getting there from the city. You can drive, take a bus, walk, bike or take a boat. The cruise is not the cheapest, nor the fastest way to get to Tyniec but it´s very popular as it offers some amazing, unusual views of Krakow and its surroundings. We went for the boat and after some 90 minutes of smooth and very enjoyable cruising on the Wisla River, we arrived in Tyniec where we got to have this view (still from the boat).

As you can see, the whole complex of the abbey is perched on the top of cliffs (limestone Jurassic cliffs known as the Tyniec Hills to be precise) and it´s very difficult to capture it in a way that would reveal the actual greatness, magnificence and charm of the site. I think it´s only possible from a dron.

The inner courtyard of the abbey is dominated by the Church of St. Peter and Paul, a massive piece of medieval architecture that dates back to the Gothic era but has been damaged and rebuilt many times throughout the centuries.

This is what the interiors of the church look like. There were also several nuns praying in the church.

The rules and habits of the abbey are much more benevolent than those of the Camaldolese monastery that I wrote about last week. The abbey is open to public and the visitors can access most of the places in there (if not all, I am not sure) such as the church and the monastery, there is also a museum, restaurants, cafes, souvenirs shops where you can buy products handmade by the monks etc.

Interestingly enough, the Camaldolese monastery is visible from Tyniec as it´s located just a few kilometers away along the river but the lifestyles of these two places are so much different...

I should also add that the Benedictine Monastery of Tyniec is considered the oldest monastery in Poland that is still in use. It was founded by the Benedictines who were invited there by the famous Polish King Casimir the Restorer in 1040.

I don´t want to include photos that are not mine in this post but I highly recommend you to check out some of the aerial pictures of the abbey such as this one or this one that give you a much better idea of how special and charming this place is.

Thanks for your attention everyone, have a nice day and enjoy the weekend :)
