Dear lovers of medieval architecture and interesting history, I recently visited the city of Smederevo, where the Smederevo Fortress is located, which I visited during my stay in this city.
An interesting story about this fortress or former city, told by the locals of this city, attracted my attention even more. I love history, the architectures that were created a long time ago are interesting for their historical sights and stories that are retold from generation to generation.
THE LEGEND OF THE CURSED CITY (CITY OF THE CURSED IRINA):
There are many legends and stories about the construction of this fortress, which you can still hear today from the locals and guides who lead you through the fortress. I did not have a guide, but I heard the story from the locals, after an interesting story, I wanted to see the remains of this medieval fortress.
Legend has it that due to the speed of construction of the fortress, many builders were exhausted, working to exhaustion dying while working on the building. The people declared Despot's wife Irina the main culprit. To this day, the name of the fortress remains under the name (damn)
FORTRESS:
After the death of Stefan Lazarević, Belgrade was occupied by the Hungarians, despot Đurđe Branković could not stay in Belgrade, so they decided to build a new capital in Smederevo. That is how the Smederevo fortress was built, which is also called a water city, because it is surrounded by the Danube and the river Jezava.
PRESTONA HALL:
Its windows are carved in stone with Gothic and Romanesque arches, which look straight towards the Danube.
The building consists of 25 square towers, which can not be photographed at once, but individually, the fortress shape is an irregular triangle.
The square towers are about 11 meters wide and reach a height of 20 meters.
the walls or towers that surround the city are built of crushed stone that are drowned in lime mortar, the thickness of the walls is up to 4.5 meters.
The fortress consists of two towns, a small town and a large town, the small town was intended for Despot Djurdj as a fortified castle, and the large one serves as accommodation for a large crew.
One excavated canal next to some towers, where the water is green and the towers are painted on the water.
Walking around the city, there are double windows on some towers, on one side you look at the city and on the other side straight to the Danube.
The city also has a lot of gates, but only one main entrance the rest are not open.
During the Smederevo Autumn, the small town becomes the cultural capital of Smederevo, where numerous performances and concerts are held.
This fortress is under state protection, but unfortunately it still needs a lot of investment to bring it in good condition, not everything is in the best condition.
However, it is a beautiful and valuable part of history that is worth visiting.
