Ancient city of Maya - chichen itza

Surely you have almost all heard of the ancient Mayan city, and as I spent my vacation in Mexico I could not fail to visit this place in which the Maya people lived.

I spent my vacation in one of the popular places of Mexico in Cacun, and the place where the city of ancient Maya is located is about 205 kilometers away, there was an organized transport tour for tourists I did not want to miss to see the remnants of this ancient place.

In my opinion, this is a special place where they lived, loved their gods and offered sacrifices. The Maya had to leave their city for unknown reasons. And now this place is just an attraction for tourists who want to see this place and learn something more.

The Castle:

After a little longer drive, around four hours we finally reached the site of the Mayan ruins, which we will explore and hear various stories about this tribe and their interesting buildings.

PICT5269.JPG

As I stand and wander around exploring and photographing the ruins of a neglected city, surprised at what surrounds me and what I can see. The platform on which the city lies is huge, I wonder how all this was built in such a distant past when there were no modern possibilities? Yet the challenge of the virtuous sun of the Yucatan and the dominant ruins awakened in me a desire to learn something more.

PICT5291.JPG

As the largest pyramid in this area, a large pyramid in the center of the temple complex called Castillo dominates. With steps, which means that there was access from all four sides, with small window-shaped openings on all four sides facing east, north, west and south. .And its height reaches 30 meters. It is believed that the length of the May year is measured on the steps.

PICT5294.JPG

Twice a year, a shadow appears on one side of the pyramid when the sun sets, the steps then receive light that combines with the huge head of a snake. Slka looks like a huge snake crawling out of the pyramid, and it represents the snake god Kukulkan.

Unfortunately it only happens twice a year and I haven’t had a chance to see such a phenomenon, it’s probably a very impressive sight maybe on another occasion I’m more fortunate to see that unique phenomenon as well.

PICT5278.JPG

How I adore sunsets. this one would be phenomenal, I often photograph sunsets and shadows of plants but this sunset in the shade of a snake is spectacular.

The pyramid is also specific because of its decorative figures, large statues of snakes that have their own symbol, according to ancient Mayan mythologies, these snakes represent the underworld.

TEMPLE OF THE WARRIOR

PICT5295.JPG

The temple of the warrior is located in the east, and it was probably named after the beautiful carved figures in stone. There are four steps on the pyramid, and it stands in the area in front of the temple.
To climb to the top of the pyramid you go up the stairs.

PICT5317.JPG

When we get a little closer we can see the carved figures in the stone, which could not be destroyed by time, the technique they used is really surprising.

MAYA'S LARGEST PLAYGROUND

The largest playground of the Maya, of all those found, this is considered to be the largest, they are very thick and small circles can be seen on the walls. This game was considered very exhausting because it was not played with the hands, but with the shoulders, hips and chest.
The object of the game was for the ball to pass through these two circles which are firmly attached to the wall.

PICT5311.JPG

I wonder how these players managed to do that? Today, football players miss a goal, and these rings, if I can call them that, or the circles are not that big, and they are hung against the wall, which means that it is also high.

PICT5306.JPG

a tragic story is connected to this game called Pok-ta-pok.
According to a theory, whoever loses, the captain of the team was sacrificed to the gods, the Maya thought that the sacrifice goes straight to heaven.
Terrible! I get chills when I remember this tragic story, this is the dark side of this game.

this is a stone wall with skulls and probably testifies to the tragic past of this game.

PICT5324.JPG

I would call it the wall of the skull, the skulls are stacked next to each other in an upright shape and turned to the same side. Terrible joy and victory of one team! I wonder if it was worth it if he lost the game to take his life, but unfortunately it was a procedure done by Maja.

Temple of Venus:

On this huge plateau not far from the pyramid, we can see the remains of the Temple of Venus, and it is also known as the tomb of Chuck Mole, because there was a sculpture of him.

PICT5297.JPG

its name comes from the very rich engraved figures in the stone.

May's calendar or astronomical observatory:

PICT5340.JPG

To peek into the mysterious world of secrets, the Maya were very interested in the future, as they foresaw the future they needed an observatory, there the priests observed the sky, made a calendar and predicted what period awaited them, and it is believed that the four pillars in front of the observatory have energy power.

Jaguar Temple:

The Jaguar Temple is located next to the ball field and leans against that platform with one wall. And it was named after the figure of an animal that is there, unfortunately a huge number of tourists, so the photo does not show the best figure of a jaguar in front of the temple.

PICT5289.JPG

The background of the temple is square in shape with openings, maybe the ball was watched from that height!

PICT5304.JPG

The openings are divided by two pillars that have claws at the end, and a carved facade with various figures, the most abundant of which is the jaguar.

PICT5309.JPG

Vegetation that surrounds the environment, and if it is known that these architectures are in the middle of the rainforest, but I noticed a very interesting tree, which is not a cactus but in its middle sprouts a cactus a very strange phenomenon! But maybe it's not, maybe it's there and normal, or maybe it's a special tree!

PICT5285.JPG

PICT5341.JPG

A couple more interesting trees that caught my attention, interesting shapes.

PICT5351.JPG

PICT5352.JPG

At the exit we could look and buy souvenirs.

PICT5273.JPG

The Mayan city still amazes with its architecture, apart from being gifted in science, the Maya were very advanced in their skillful architectures and art. This can be seen in every photo I posted. The experience was unique, except for those scary stories from by playing ball.
