Hoy os quiero hablar de uno de los edificios más antiguos que se pueden ver en el centro de Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz.
Visitar Jerez es ver grandes caserones de mediados del siglo XIX, cuando Jerez era la cuna del vino de mesa y el Jerez se bebía en los momentos de celebración o las familias más pudientes, para hacer alarde de su influencia y poder.
Hay edificios de verdaderas magnitudes y formas elaboradas pero hoy os quiero hablar del edificio de los Arcos, situado en la céntrica plaza del Arenal.
Today I want to talk to you about one of the oldest buildings that can be seen in the centre of Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz.
To visit Jerez is to see large mansions from the mid 19th century, when Jerez was the birthplace of table wine and sherry was drunk at times of celebration or by the wealthiest families, to show off their influence and power.
There are buildings of real magnitude and elaborate forms but today I want to talk about the Arcos building, located in the central Plaza del Arenal.
Este edificio data de mediados del siglo XVII y no pasa inadvertido a los ojos de nadie, diría yo.
Sus obras de rehabilitación y conservación lo hacen ser de lo más llamativo, siendo y teniendo todo el carácter y pureza de las obras de esos tiempos.
Te traslada a otros años y me parece una obra realmente extraordinaria aún siendo hoy en día una edificación de carácter muy sencilla y castellana.
This building dates from the middle of the 17th century and I would say that it does not go unnoticed in the eyes of anyone.
Its refurbishment and conservation works make it a real eye-catcher, being and having all the character and purity of the works of those times.
It takes you back to other years and it seems to me to be a really extraordinary work, even though today it is a very simple and Castilian building.
Sus arcos en la galería, le hacen honor a su nombre, es por ello que aún hoy día si preguntas por el edificio de los arcos, todos te saben hacer llegar a el y lo conocen sin lugar a dudas.
Es una edificación de dimensiones muy grandes para la época en la que se realizó.
Tiene en unos de los laterales unas escaleras que fueron rehabilitadas y hechas por artesanos carpinteros y ebanistas, en madera idénticamente iguales a las que tenía en sus inicios.
Ver el edificio te traslada a siglos pasados, a años de pobreza y miseria en los que Cádiz era muy poderosa debido a su situación estratégica de puerto de mercancías y no podemos olvidar los viajes a tierras precolombinas.
The arches in the gallery live up to their name, which is why even today, if you ask for the arches building, everyone knows how to get you there and knows it without a doubt.
It is a building of very large dimensions for the period in which it was built.
On one side of the building there are stairs that were restored and made by carpenters and cabinetmakers, in wood identical to the ones it had at the beginning.
Seeing the building takes you back to past centuries, to years of poverty and misery in which Cadiz was very powerful due to its strategic location as a port for goods and we cannot forget the trips to pre-Columbian lands.
Muchas de las hortalizas y legumbres que hoy día están extendidas por todo el mundo, en aquella época eran trasladadas desde estos puertos, haciendo de este entorno un lugar muy rico y empoderado.
Este edificio sin duda te traslada a estos años.
Una gran fachada de piedra con arcos y la sencillez de su época.
Uno de los detalles que no pasan desapercibido son las persianas de mimbre. Tal cual sería en esos siglos y ha sido por el pasar de los años, en tierras de calor en verano, estas persianas de mimbre hacías sombra en los balcones dejando así pasar por ellos la brisa a unos pocos grados menos y dejando el entorno del interior refrescado y ventilado.
Many of the vegetables and pulses that are nowadays spread all over the world, at that time were transported from these ports making this environment a very rich and empowered place.
This building undoubtedly takes you back to those years.
A large stone façade with arches and the simplicity of its time.
One of the details that do not go unnoticed are the wicker shutters. As it would have been in those centuries and has been over the years, in hot summer days, these wicker blinds shaded the balconies, allowing the breeze to pass through them at a few degrees less and leaving the interior environment cool and ventilated.
Ahora son de diseño rústico y Boho chic, se han puesto de moda, muchos son los que hacen sus casas con carácter rústico y optan por poner estas persianas de esparto 100% natural en su mayoría a modo de decoración en galerías y balcones.
Pero la verdadera característica de ellas es la de refrescar la vivienda a modo de toldo y para poder resguardarla de la lluvia en invierno.
Hechas a mano y siendo de lo más humilde que existía cuando con el transcurrir de los años se construía con otros materiales como es la forja y las vidrieras para realizar estas funciones.
No he podido entrar a su interior en esta ocasión pero lo intentaré la próxima vez que visite Jerez, sin duda.
Las galerías en planta baja del edificio tienen unos trabajos de vigas y viguetas de madera realmente característicos de su construcción.
Hoy en día es la sede de Urbanismo de la ciudad Gaditana y creo que es uno de los edificios más llamativos que se pueden ver.

The galleries on the ground floor of the building have some of the characteristic wooden beams and joists of its construction.
Nowadays it is the headquarters of Urbanism of the city of Jerez and I think it is one of the most striking buildings you can see.
Desde luego es verdad que al pasear por la galería inferior a horas de sol, te resguardas y los grados bajan significativamente.
It is certainly true that when walking along the lower gallery at sunny hours, you are sheltered and the temperatures drop significantly.
Me imagino como sería cuando bajo estos arcos paseaban las damas y los caballeros y los carruajes de caballos eran los medios de transporte...
I can imagine what it was like when ladies and gentlemen strolled under these arches and horse-drawn carriages were the means of transport...
