On the Costa del Sol, in the south of Spain, the climate, the safety of the citizens and the good sense of humour of the always cheerful Andalusians have led to an increasing number of Russians wishing to stay and live here. There are more than eight thousand Russians living in Andalusia, especially in the town of Marbella, where they have made their home, born their children and have had their baptisms in the orthodox style and all the sacraments. Not counting the Ukrainian, Georgian, Belarusian and other citizens who also have this religion as the majority in their country.
En la Costa de Sol, en el Sur de España, ya sea por el clima, la seguridad ciudadana, el buen sentido del humor de los andaluces siempre alegres, ha hecho que cada vez sean más los rusos que han deseado quedarse a vivir. Son más de ocho mil rusos viviendo en Andalucía, sobre todo en la localidad de Marbella, donde han creado su hogar, nacido sus hijos con la necesidad de sus bautizos al estilo ortodoxo y lo mismo con todos los sacramentos. Sin contar los ciudadanos ucranianos, georgianos, bielorrusos o de otros países que también tienen esta religión como mayoritaria en su país.
The town hall of Estepona, a neighbouring town of Marbella, gave a plot of land for the construction of the orthodox church. After two years of work this is the result. Both the temple and the bell tower are finished with a dome or stainless steel head with a cross on top.
El ayuntamiento de Estepona, localidad vecina de Marbella, cedió un terreno para la construcción del templo ortodoxo. Después de dos años de obras este es el resultado. Tanto el templo como el campanario están acabados con una cúpula o cabeza de acero inoxidable con una cruz encima.
I have not had the good fortune to travel to countries where the main religion is orthodox and this is the first one I have seen. The whiteness of the façade reflects all the sunlight and is reminiscent of Andalusian white villages. Its shiny stainless steel domes catch the eye from afar.

The semi-dome where the altar will be, as well as the one at the other end, are also finished in shiny stainless metal.
The bell tower is separate from the main church and is nine metres high.

The area where the church was built is a hill about two kilometres away from the sandy beach in an area that is hardly urbanised. Possibly thanks to this beautiful church it will be filled with houses for people of orthodox religion as it has happened in all the cultures where the villages are growing with religious buildings as the centre of the population. From the hill you can see the sea and on clear days you can see the mountains of the African coast and Gibraltar.
La zona donde se ha construido el templo es una colina que está a unos dos kilómetros escasos de la arena de la playa en una zona apenas urbanizada. Posiblemente gracias a esta bella iglesia se llenará de viviendas para personas de religión ortodoxa como ha solido pasar en todas las culturas donde los pueblos van creciendo teniendo como centro de la población los edificios religiosos. desde la colina se divisa el mar y en días claros se ve perfectamente las montañas de la costa africana y Gibraltar.
The complex has another building in the upper part that I have not been able to photograph because the temple is closed, where cultural events are held. I will keep an eye out for news so that I can enter and visit the inside of the enclosure and find out more about their customs and culture, which attracts my attention so much. In addition, it is seen that they have decorated it with a beautiful garden where you can distinguish plant species such as olive trees, ficus and robust Washingtonia palms. I have not been able to see the hedges and creeping plants, but I am sure they are not lacking in detail. Outside there are planted acacia trees and a healthy carpet of grass, giving a touch of colour to the temple.
El conjunto tiene otro edificio en la parte alta que no he podido fotografiar por estar el templo cerrado donde se hacen eventos culturales de los que estaré atento a las noticias para poder entrar y visitar el interior del recinto y saber algo más de sus costumbres y cultura que tanto me llama la atención. Además se ve que lo han decorado con un bello jardín donde se pueden distinguir especies vegetales como son los olivos, ficus y palmeras Washingtonias robustas. La parte de de setos y plantas rastreras no las he podido ver pero seguramente no les faltará ni un detalle. Por fuera hay plantados árboles de acacia y una saludable alfombra de grama, dando un toque de color al templo.
The nearest orthodox temples are in Madrid and Alicante. About five hundred kilometres away. Let us hope that this will not be the last one in Andalusia and that this culture will continue to grow in peace like all the others that have existed for millennia in this sunny land.
Los templos ortodoxos más cercanos están en Madrid y Alicante. Unos quinientos kilómetros de distancia. Esperemos no sea el último de Andalucía y siga creciendo esta cultura en paz como todas las que ya hay desde hace milenios en esta soleada tierra.
