Spanish details of Gibraltar // Detalles españoles de Gibraltar

Hello to all architecture and design lovers!
Today I would like to show you some Spanish vestiges of the city of Gibraltar that would go unnoticed if you make a short visit as is normal in this British colony.
Most tourists who come to Gibraltar usually arrive on cruise ships that make a one-day stopover or come by rental car from the Costa del Sol to get to know this historic city. In those few hours they get to see the typical streets such as "Main Street", where you can buy quality products without taxes and stop for lunch. The next possible visit is to climb to the top of the rock, which with its height of four hundred metres, you can enjoy excellent views of Africa and Spain if the humid easterly wind allows it. There you will see the macaque monkeys that live in the high area and then go into the cave of San Miguel and the tunnels excavated at different times.

But if you are in a hurry you will miss some beautiful and historic details. One of them is the entrance arch of an old church that was built by the Spanish when Gibraltar belonged to the Kingdom of Spain.

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary.

La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario.

The church arch is all that remains of the Christian church built between the 16th-17th centuries and was probably destroyed during the invasion of the Anglo-Dutch army in 1704, when the old town was razed to the ground by the cannons of His Majesty's ships.

A curiosity of the arch of the ancient Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario is that it is made of sandstone. A sedimentary rock that is easy to carve and is found on the opposite side of Gibraltar in a fossilised dune. The rock is composed of hard limestone rock which is what the English used to build the dwelling that now stands where the church used to be. The rock quarried from the construction of the 18th century tunnels was used to rebuild the town.

As a detail, the Spanish citizens who wanted to leave Gibraltar when it fell into British hands, took many of the religious images and bibles that they took to a nearby hermitage, founding the town of San Roque. Other citizens of Gibraltar founded the town of Los Barrios.

Very close to the arch of the church we find a Spanish vestige that cannot go unnoticed.

The wall of Charles V.

La muralla de Carlos V.

The Spanish city of Gibraltar did not have enough garrison to defend the entire peninsula of Gibraltar. Therefore, right in the middle of the rock, an imposing wall was built to protect the citizens from the constant Berber attacks that were looking for Christian slaves to row for life in their galleys.

The wall rises from the seashore to the top. As the city has grown, it has had to open new gates through the wall to ease traffic.

Another vestige of the Spanish period is the remains of the first Spanish cistern that supplied drinking water to the public fountain in the main square of the city. Here the citizens filled their pitchers for drinking and other domestic purposes.

Built in 1571, it collected water from a spring of water filtered from the rock on the outskirts of the city and was channelled to a public fountain. With the arrival of more people and soldiers, the water began to be collected from the spring itself and the canalisation fell into disuse.

The canalisation of the cistern supplied water to the fountain in the Plaza Mayor.
The fountain has been maintained but has been moved. It was originally located where the Town Hall now stands.

The water came out of the mouths of the gargoyles, which are not the original ones. At the top is written "AÑO DE 1684". (Year of 1684)
