How to take care of musical instruments so that they are well preserved (guitar, cuatro, mandolin) // Cómo cuidar los instrumentos musicales para que estén bien conservados (guitarra, cuatro, mandolina)
Friends, today I want to talk to you about the care we have to do to stringed musical instruments, in this case the mandolin, guitar and the cuatro, but it also applies to other instruments with a wooden resonance box and steel strings.
My Uncle, my unforgettable music teacher and counselor // Mi Tío, mi inolvidable maestro y consejero de la música
I tell you, I started playing four at 12 years old, thanks to my Uncle, who was a great musician and my teacher. He never studied music, but he learned from a very young age to play various string instruments, including the mandolin and the bandola. llanera.
Well friends, that's how I continued by the hand of my uncle, even at 18 I joined the llanero group "Brisas de Venezuela" as a cuatrista and at the University I was part of the student band and the university choir. I was lucky that a bandmate gave me mandolin lessons, but I needed this instrument. In 1982 I bought a concert mandolin made in Rome, of this model there were only three in Venezuela including mine.
The advice of my Uncle // Los consejos de mi Tío
As I was saying, when my uncle saw my mandolin, he fell in love with it, and he gave me some tips to keep the instruments in good condition.
Recommendations from my uncle:
- Musical instruments must be cared for, these cares begin with cleaning and maintenance, Such as: cleaning the strings with a cloth with lubricant "THREE in ONE" in this way the strings do not rust and last longer, but we must avoid that oil soaks into the pins.
- The "THREE in ONE" oil is also applied to the resonance box, this is done with a cotton ball and a few drops of oil.
- Musical instruments are not lent, really friends, this advice stuck in my mind, even, on several occasions, some fellow musicians asked me to borrow it, but I always had a pretext, because if they damaged it, it was hard to get another like this.
- Once the instruments are used they are stored in their case
- Wooden box musical instruments, if you are not going to use them for a few days, it is advisable to de-temper their strings.
- Wooden instruments should be stored in places where there is no excess heat or cold, because this can affect the sound of the soundboard and even the glue.
- My uncle when he went on a trip, he did not accept that their instruments were put in the suitcase of the car, because they could spoil it, He always carried them in his arms, like a child, for this reason He said that musical instruments had to take care of them like children because they are fragile.
