[Eng-Esp] A hymn to peace || Un himno a la paz

One of the most wonderful effects of music and songs is that they can promote peace in a very effective way since they are artistic expressions that cross borders, which invite us to look beyond our obvious differences. Now, here I want to highlight a song that in addition to its music with its lyrics can be carried specially and undoubtedly the title of this post.

It is Imagine by John Lenon, of the soft rock genre and that he wrote with his spouse Yoko Ono to leave a clear message to the world about what should be the guide of action towards the path of peace, of which there is much talk but in practice, those attitudes that can really promote it are not cultivated.

For this reason, this song is a kind of poetic language that invites us to imagine how different things would be if there were no divisions in society, not literally speaking (since everything needs an organization and has both a hierarchy and an order) but those divisions that lead us to disqualify each other.

I leave a comment on the following lines:

  • Imagine there's no heaven...No hell below us. As I was saying this is not a song to interpret in a literal way, so, here it is not attacking any religion but making us think that sometimes we can act out of interest and not in a genuine way, just to reach heaven and avoid a hell, when good relationships should be built on sincerity, in valuing what human brotherhood means which comes first than any religious difference.

Here I can leave my experience since I am a Catholic priest and have great friends of other religions. Even some atheists because what unites us is the value of being a person and personality regardless of professing a religion.

  • Imagine there's no countries... Imagine no possessions. Once again it is not something literal but a call of attention against all kinds of social and political discrimination as well as economic because we are not worth for what we have but for what we are, from there that although it is fair and necessary our possessions these should not be reasons for injustice but rather motivation and commitment for the construction of a better society.

  • You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. Many of us have these ideals of peace and social justice, however paradoxically we allow ourselves to be overly influenced by those voices that tell us that they are utopian goals, this would also be a call to constancy in our promotion of good because, as a thought says, the worst is not the triumph of the bad but the weariness of the good.

  • Imagine there's no heaven...No hell below us.

  • Imagine there's no countries... Imagine no possessions.

  • You may say I'm a dreamer, But I'm not the only one.
