Learning about trading of Hive: Are you a market maker?

Many people have been asked for my perspective on trading cryptocurrencies, and more is the interest in trading HIVE. The cryptocurrency prices are very volatile, which means that their price can rise abruptly and fall in the same way. For this reason, I have finally decided to share with you some introductory trading topics. Here, we will talk about the market makers and takers, to finally see which one of these personalities we identify with the most.

Before investing in any cryptocurrency, I look at the fees for trading and the fees for withdrawing the currencies from the exchanges. This post is about that, about the commissions and types of orders that you can submit in the cryptocurrency markets.

Let's start by stating that market makers are those users or robots who provide liquidity to the markets. In other words, they are those who place buy or sell orders and wait for their orders to be filled.

Let's start by stating that market makers are those users or robots who provide liquidity to the markets. In other words, they are those who place buy or sell orders and wait for their orders to be filled.

Order types in trading

In the hypothetical case that you make a call to your favorite exchange to sell or buy cryptocurrencies, you would be asked: do you want to sell at market price or at what price?

At the market price: At the maximum price that are buying these cryptocurrencies at that time.

Limit order: At a fixed price you decide to sell or buy. If the cryptocoins are traded at the price you set, you will be buying or selling the coins.

What are the advantages of being a market maker?

Sometimes less fees are charged because you provide liquidity (money) to the markets. So when someone wants to sell or buy coins, your order is already placed and waiting for an interested party to come and buy/sell your coins at the price you specified.

On the contrary, let's forget about the market maker for a moment. When is it convenient to be a market taker?

This is when the exchange where you operate charges the same commission for buying and selling coins or there is no trading commission. Another case is when you are going to exchange the minimum amount of coins allowed by that exchange. There is not much point in waiting to exchange the coins since the commissions would only be a few cents.

The market takers are those who come to exchange currencies without caring about the commissions. Sometimes they do so because they are impatient or don't know that will pay more commission for the exchange or simply because they want to move the market price.

In another post, we will approach the most common trading strategies in more detail. But there is a low-risk strategy that I name as Dual trading. This refers to the fact that we can buy cheaper currencies in one market and sell them in another, so many market takers know in advance that they have a guaranteed profit in one of the two markets. They then come and take orders from the market makers to buy back the coins they sold or sell the coins they bought in the other exchange.

Below are the trading commissions and minimum trading amounts for the major exchanges for Hive.

I prefer to plan my orders because I like to be a market maker. For example, in the HIVE/USDT pair, I have about 10 buy orders and 10 sell orders. It is crucial to write down everything in detail to know if I am in profit or loss. I use the profits as a market taker, that is to say I risk them more and it is sometimes with those profits that I obtain good benefits. Usually, I trade on Binance or Bittrex depending on whether I want to trade HIVE against USDT or BTC.
