A Raccoon adventure

A couple of months ago I went to Merida, Mexico on a business trip. Every day I tried to do some exploration since that zone of Mexico, particularly Yucatan is probably - along with Quintana Roo - one of the parts of the country with the most adventures to live and the most places to visit, both on and off grid.

One of those little adventures was exploring a body of cenotes and a river that surrounds all the cenotes. It's actually a small reserve, and you can access it from the highway, then you have to cross a huge body of water and after that, you reach a mangrove island and you're finally in the natural reserve.

Once you're in there, you're free to roam the place, swim in the cenotes and just chill. As you can see in the picture above, the place is fairly colonized and set up for tourism. I don't really like those places but hey, if you're already there, better to enjoy the time and the view.

Well, I was already there, so I decided to make the most of it. I began to chat with one of the reserve's local, you know the kind, the ones that live in the reserve and work taking care of the place and handle the tourists. Turns out the place is raccoon infested - well, not really infested because they actually take care of the raccoons, feed them and encourage their reproduction - and after a few minutes, he decided to take me out of the tourist path and into the mangroves, where we reached a clear, a clear where they feed the raccoons.

The moment the local brought out the food bowl, several raccoons, babies included, came out from under the rocks and from inside the bushes and bam, I had one of the most magical experiences of 2021...
