A Little Tribute to My Granpa in Heaven... Happy Birthday Lolo Nono! <3

If there's someone I've looked up to when I was a child and even until now, that would be my grandpa, Lolo Nono. He was the kindest person I've ever known. He was well-loved by everyone around him because he was selfless, generous and loving. He was one of the reasons why I was able to continue studying in high school and even in college. He was also very smart despite not being able to go to school. He was great at math and history, especially.

When he died during my college years, everything went under. The family somehow became scattered... it was a disaster. It's like no one could keep everything up in place. Grandma is powerless against other people in the family, but my parents and I are doing our best to give our support to grandma, same with my other cousins.

It's just really lovely to reminisce the days when grandpa was still alive. Sure we weren't rich and couldn't have everything we want, but he was doing his best to help us with our needs. He was the heart of the family. It's been more than 10 years but I and other family members still miss him so damn much. Ugh... stupid ninja cutting onions around here

We still celebrate his birthday until now. My grandma and other uncles living with her are offering prayers and prepared some food to share back in our hometown, while my parents and I prepared some special food to share and some prayers for him here in our house. The hometown is in another island, so it's quite difficult and really expensive to go home more so because of the pandemic.

Last night after my classes at around 11:30PM, I decided to make something for grandpa and that is a painting of him.

Recently, I'm getting more and more confident in painting people, so I can now make a decent painting for grandpa. I know it's not that good, yet... but I'll keep improving. For sure, he'd encourage me to do and pursue whatever I am happiest with.

Allow me to show you the process starting from preparing the materials needed and sketching.

I used mechanical pencil in sketching. As for the paper, I used my A5 watercolor pad. For the paint, I ended up just using my solid watercolor and white acrylic paint since I ran out of white solid watercolor. lol Since the sketch is done, let's do the coloring. :)

I painted the background first and then painted the base color for grandpa's face.

As usual, I did trial and error until I get the color that I want. I mixed some shades of brown, yellow and orange for this.

Facial features done, let's complete the other parts like the hair and the outfit.

Using a white pen, I did some highlights to make the painting livelier. Next thing to do is to take out the masking tapes and write my username and signature.

Let's take a closer look and finally a selfie with my artwork. <3

We love you, Lolo Nono (grandpa Nono). You will always and forever live in our hearts. Happy birthday in heaven!

Thanks for checking out this small tribute I made for my grandpa. Hopefully, we could visit his grave again. There was an announcement about ships going to my hometown are going to function again soon, but the requirements are crazy expensive and we'd need to be quarantined for a week, we won't be able to do anything during our stay. Hopefully, everything goes back to normal soon. I miss grandma and my other relatives there.
