Oil Painting - Isle of Skye

This is a recent oil painting of a previous acrylic study I dId a couple of years ago. I used a larger canvas with this version and changed the sky quite a bit. I used two reference photos that I took about ten years ago. The sky changed so much in a few minutes that I liked the sky in one photo and the foreground and mid ground in another photo. My oil painting uses my favorite parts of each photo.

Here’s the painting.

Here are my process photos.
First I used a pink gesso ground color and painted the horizon and cottages first. I wanted to ensure I got them sized and positioned appropriately before moving on.

Then I started blocking in the large shapes.

I put at least four coats of color on the field before I added the highlighting for the wildflowers. It may be a little overkill, but I got to experiment with a variety of ways to paint the flowers before settling on the large blocks of light yellow in the final version.

I hope you like my painting and seeing how I composed and painted it.
