El origen mitológico de este signo viene de la mano de los Gemelos Cástor y Pólux, que eran las caras opuestas de una misma moneda, compenetrándose el uno al otro a pesar de algunas de sus diferencias, su cariño fraternal innegable.

The mythological origin of this sign comes from the hand of the twins Castor and Pollux, who were the opposite sides of the same coin, understanding each other despite some of their differences, their brotherly affection undeniable.

Zeus, como no puede ser diferente, se transformó en cisne y yació con la Reina de Esparta, Leda. La mujer mortal paseaba por las orillas del río Eurotas, cuando de pronto vio a un gran cisne que se acercaba a ella con desesperación y que, fingiendo ser perseguido por una gran águila, se posó sobre ella. Esa misma noche, Leda yació con su esposo, el Rey Tindáreo.

Zeus, as it cannot be different, transformed himself into a swan and lay with the Queen of Sparta, Leda. The mortal woman was strolling along the banks of the river Eurotas, when suddenly she saw a great swan approaching her in desperation and, pretending to be pursued by a great eagle, landed on her. That same night, Leda lay with her husband, King Tindareus.

Tiempo después, Leda puso dos enormes huevos de los que salieron dos tandas de gemelos fraternos; de uno Helena (que se convertiría en Helena de Troya) y Pólux, ambos hijos de Zeus, y del otro, Cástor y Clitemnestra (quien sería Reina de Micenas), hijos de Tindáreo.

Some time later, Leda laid two enormous eggs from which two sets of fraternal twins hatched; from one, Helen (who would become Helen of Troy) and Pollux, both sons of Zeus, and from the other, Castor and Clytemnestra (who would become Queen of Mycenae), sons of Tindarus.

Lo que diferenciaba a ambas tandas de gemelos era que, Helena y Pólux al ser hijos de un dios, eran inmortales, mientras que Cástor y Clitemnestra, como hijos de un mortal, así mismo fueron mortales. Y, a pesar de haber nacido de distintos huevos y no haber sido gemelo del otro por nacimiento, se les consideraba como tal por el gran parecido entre ambos, siendo llamados los Dioscuros, que significa “hijos de Zeus” y a su vez representaba esa correlación que existía en su dinámica.

What differentiated both sets of twins was that Helen and Pollux, being children of a god, were immortal, while Castor and Clytemnestra, as children of a mortal, were likewise mortal. And, despite having been born from different eggs and not having been twins of each other by birth, they were considered as such because of the great resemblance between them, being called the Dioscuri, which means "children of Zeus" and in turn represented that correlation that existed in their dynamics.

Ambos sentían aprecio y cariño por sus respectivas hermanas, siendo ese lazo tan fuerte como para naturalmente surgir al rescate de su hermana Helena cuando Teseo la raptó y tomar venganza en su nombre al raptar a la madre de Teseo; sin embargo, el lazo que tenían entre sí, iba a otro nivel al considerarse gemelos.

Both felt appreciation and affection for their respective sisters, being that bond so strong as to naturally arise to the rescue of their sister Helen when Theseus kidnapped her and take revenge on her behalf by abducting Theseus' mother; however, the bond they had between them, went to another level by being considered twins.

Cástor era famoso por la habilidad que tenía con los caballos a la hora de domarlos y cabalgarlos, mientras que Pólux por su destreza en el boxeo. Los Dioscuros vivieron muchas aventuras juntos, como unirse a los Argonautas en su cruzada, en la cual Pólux mostró su destreza en el boxeo al matar al Rey Ámico, o como devastar un país juntos cuando la Reina de este ofendió a Peleo, el padre de Aquiles.

Castor was famous for his ability to tame and ride horses, while Pollux was famous for his boxing skills. The Dioscuri lived many adventures together, such as joining the Argonauts in their crusade, in which Pollux showed his boxing skills by killing King Amicus, or devastating a country together when its Queen offended Peleus, Achilles' father.

Cástor y Pólux raptaron a las hijas de un príncipe de Mesenia llamado Leucipo, Hilaira y Febe, y las desposaron. Debido a esto, Idas y Linceo, ambos prometidos de las princesas, fueron en busca de los Dioscuros y dieron muerte a Cástor. Bien Zeus enfurecido o Pólux afligido, dio muertes a ambos y, seguido de esto, Pólux acudió a su padre y le rogó que le regresara la vida a su gemelo, pero Zeus era firme en que no podía conceder eso y sintió pena por su hijo, ahora maldecido con la inmortalidad.

Castor and Pollux abducted the daughters of a prince of Messenia named Leucippus, Hilaira and Phoebe, and betrothed them. Because of this, Idas and Linceus, both betrothed of the princesses, went in search of the Dioscuri and killed Castor. Either enraged Zeus or afflicted Pollux, gave deaths to both and, following this, Pollux went to his father and begged him to restore life to his twin, but Zeus was adamant that he could not grant that and felt sorry for his son, now cursed with immortality.

Pólux rogó a su padre que le quitara su inmortalidad y lo dejara unirse a su hermano en el inframundo, y el Rey de los dioses logró acordar algo con su hijo: Pólux compartiría tanto la inmortalidad como la mortalidad con su gemelo, alternándose como dioses en el Olimpo y como mortales fallecidos en el Hades.

Pollux begged his father to take away his immortality and let him join his brother in the underworld, and the King of the gods managed to agree on something with his son: Pollux would share both immortality and mortality with his twin, alternating as gods on Olympus and as deceased mortals in Hades.

Zeus, conmovido por el amor y cariño que se tenían los Dioscuros, y el cómo ser inmortales o mortales en el Inframundo no afectaba su ánimo mientras estuvieran juntos, los inmortalizó y a su amor fraternal por la eternidad, colocándolos entre las estrellas como la constelación Gemini, permaneciendo como vivieron y dejaron esa vida: juntos.

Zeus, moved by the love and affection the Dioscuri had for each other, and how being immortal or mortal in the Underworld did not affect their mood as long as they were together, immortalized them and their brotherly love for eternity, placing them among the stars as the constellation Gemini, remaining as they lived and left that life: together.
