A dark day

Quarter past two in the morning, he yawned and rubbed his tired face with his right palm before stretching as he stood up from the desk where he had been working hard on his school assignment since 10pm. The assignment was to attempt a rhythmic analysis of an African song, paying careful attention to the metrical patterns. That he had done, and now he was ready to get some sleep before 6am when he was to wake up and prepare for the adventure of another school day.

After carefully saving the assignment and backing it up on Google Drive, he switched the laptop off, pushed away the desk that served as his nightstand, tucked himself underneath his blanket and fell asleep.

When he opened his eyes and checked the time on his phone screen, it was 7:32am. Again, the alarm had failed him. He jumped out of bed and hurried into the bathroom to have the quickest bath in history. He had only thirty minutes to make it to Dr. Charles' lecture. He couldn't afford to miss the lecture nor be a minute late. It would mean kissing the lecture goodbye for the entire semester. Dr. Charles was that strict and unforgiving.

7:45am, he was out of his apartment, racing to school which was approximately ten minutes away from his residence. He got to the school gate at 7:50am. Now, he had about 15 minutes to make it to the class but all that was standing between him and that were the speedy vehicles plying the street that morning.
Running out of patience, he decided to make a run for the 15 seconds chance before him. Just 5 seconds to the other side of the road, a car, out of nowhere, speeding as though its driver were in some kind of motorsport, found it rather too late to avoid hitting the diligent student. And in a split second, the kerbstones of the road were smeared with blood that kept gushing endlessly.
