The order came in late as of only a few days ago from my Canadian Retailer before I had to commit to rush post my Halloween night feature piece.
That’s the way the coin rolls.
I’m happy to report having this MPM Halloween collectable, and I don’t plan to flip it in the secondary market. Considering the premium, I would be hard pressed to come out ahead anyway.
So, I buy what I like.
The Big Bad Werewolf
While Dracula was the creation of Bram Stokers imagination, as is Frankenstein the creative work of Mary Shelley. The Werewolf had no clear Author being accredited it with other than what was inferred in ancient Greek Literature; the story of King Lycaon of Arcadia by Greek Geographer Pausanias. That is Zeus changing the King into a wolf, rather than a Man-Wolf, for testing Zeus’ godship.
Rather, they largely originate from the time of the Middle Ages Europe from a blend of German paganism seeded with a bit of Greek Mythology, fear promulgated by the church and exaggeration in folk tale.
Medieval witness accounts of wolf attacks exhibiting remarkable human like intelligence to Wolves feeding on the bodies of battlefield dead reanimating of fallen brethren into Man wolves may have been given license for embellishment.
The Bonus Coin
Here is one of my favorite bullion coins from back in 2017. A marvelous update to the original 1967 Canada 50 Cents. I loved it enough to put up with the extra Fractional Premium over and above that for the corresponding 2017 Maple Leaf.
It was almost maddening to pay for this coin but for a few dollars more it would have been more cost efficient to get the Full ounce Maple Leaf at that time. I ended getting four of these 2017 Howling Wolves in my stack, recently sending one off as a gift to a friend.☠️
Rather unfortunate that this coin had succumb to the Milk Spot plague that started in 2014 on RCM Bullion products like the Bird of Prey products in also 2015, 2016 years and in this case, persisting in 2017 on despite assurances from the RCM the process has been improved and occurrences of spotting less frequent.
IF there is one other critique of this coin it is once again the inconsistent assignment of the Dollar Denomination since the Maple Leaf is denominated $5 this ¾ oz. should have been denominated as $3.75 or $3.50 rather than $2CAD.
The Howling Wolf being selected for this ¾ oz. format was no accident. It was 50 years ago from 2017 the Howling Wolf appeared on the 1967 Canada Centennial 50 Cents coin as in the following picture on the lower right.
A proof 1967-2017 ‘Re-Mint’ Centennial commemorative was also produced to the mintage of 20,000, as a part of a complete seven coin set of the original Centennial set.
What I thought unusual was there also being an odd 40-year 1967-2007 Commemorative ten years prior, a 2012 Version and more than I wish to list.
Which brings up one more tiny critique, regarding overuse of the same design.
In closing, I think I’ll give my DVD player to spin the Underworld Movie series this week. Vampires vs Werewolves gets me into the Halloween frame of mind.
So, what will be on the Monarch Precious Metals Tombstone next year for 2022? Frankenstein? Dracula? Or John Biden’s ghost?
