What Do We Have Here ..

A really cool coin is what we have here. A 1810 Capped Bust Half Dollar. 1,276,276 of these were minted in good old Philly (Philadelphia) as we call it around these parts, and I somehow ended up with one of them.

I picked up this coin from a coin dealer a long long time ago. I paid about $15.00 for it then, and it has appreciated ever since. The .825 Silver coin contains roughly $8.80 worth of silver given todays prices. It's collector's value far exceeds its bullion value. I am not sure what this coin would be worth or graded at. Doesn't much matter to me now, because I am not ready to part with her.

The coin isn't in too bad of shape.. but does contain some relatively noticeable scratches. I have no clue what someone was thinking when they were digging into the faces of the reverse and obverse, but shame on them! hehe.

Let's Take A Closer Look At It ..

The Obverse ..
Is the image of the American Bald Eagle. Her wings are spread apart and she holds in her grip a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. Above the eagle is the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and "UNINTED STATES OF AMERICA". Below the eagle can be found the coin's denomination, which is "50 C.".

The Reverse ..
Oh Liberty! There she is, or at least her bust. She faces to the left wearing the Freedom Cap. The cap signifies or is rather a symbol of the American Revolutionary War. Her hair flows in waves of curls out from under the cap, down toward the bottom of the coin. Surrounding Liberty's bust are 13 stars that represent the original thirteen states in the Union. The date of 1810 is found beneath Liberty, and is slightly curved and off center.

The Edge ..
The edge is stamped with the following phrase; "FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR". The coin I have here, is slightly unreadable due to an error or over stamping. As you can see above, or as you can not see, lol, the word 'DOLLAR' over laps the word 'FIFTY'.

Does the error make the coin worth a bit more? Or does it at least add back the value lost due to the scratching? Who knows.

Things I Remember From 1810 ..

Hey, that's a long time ago, but I do remember that James Madison was president. Also some other useless knowledge (mostly from reading an Uncle John's Bathroom Reader), I remembered that John Jacob Astor created a company called The Pacific Fur Company. I don't remember the exact details, but I think he and several others sailed down around South America and set up a fur trading post near where the mouth of the Columbia River opens up. Fort Astoria! And yeah.. That's about as far as my 1810ish knowledge goes. I'll leave the rest to the historians.
