Hello, cinephiles! Once again I show up for this community this time to do a simple review on a Netflix series that I'm watching and that I simply must recommend because of how good I thought it was.

As many will know, Netflix has a great selection of original series based on widely underrated stories and books so they have taken the opportunity to adapt these stories to the small screen. I am currently watching a series starring the beautiful Anya Taylor-Joy, a series whose plot is based on the skill and intelligence to play chess Queen's Gambit.

Review

Queen's Gambit

7-episode miniseries. Kentucky, 1960s. In the midst of the Cold War, young Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) is an orphan with a prodigious aptitude for chess, who struggles with her addictions as she tries to become the best player in the world by beating the grandmasters, especially the Russians.

A series based on the book of the same name written by author Walter Tevis, it caught my attention because I really like Taylor-Joy's acting and I thought it was worth watching especially because when I was a child I learned to play chess and contrary to what many believe it is actually an exciting game that puts your brain to work at incredible speeds.

My Opinion

I found the plot very interesting but after the first episode I was completely hooked, the story is very good and it is not only and purely about chess but it is the main element. Anya in the role of a girl whose mental sport is her passion is amazing to me, how it changes her life and becomes her motivation. Her excitement when she gets a perfect move and the frustration when she feels she might lose to her opponent.

As I mentioned before, you don't have to be a chess fan to feel tension in every competition in which the protagonist participates because with her own expressions she gives us to understand everything that happens without the need for us to be experts, her complete immersion in the game makes us immerse ourselves too and think "I wish I knew how to play chess to put myself in her place and understand the moves ".

Another thing I like a lot is the contrast between the chess prodigy Beth and the teenage Beth who is discovering her youth and her life, the control she has while playing disappears when she has to live situations as normal as going to a girls party and you can see how uncomfortable she feels because it is not her comfort zone, it is not her territory and that is why chess is more than just a game she likes, it is her domain, her territory, her zone, it is amazing to see her playing.

On the other hand, Beth Harmon's story is touching and very realistic set in an era where intelligent women were told "you really know how to do that?", they were more impressed by the fact of having talent being women than by the talent itself, a reality a little crude if you ask me that is perfectly portrayed in the series and that does not detract at all from the story and does not feel forced.

I really recommend this Netflix series that undoubtedly has a very good story and the acting is excellent, the setting and the costumes are also something to delight. If you have already seen it, leave me your opinion in a comment and let me know what you thought.

Bonus: What is the Queen's Gambit?

The Gambit move as such is basically a sacrifice that is made to an initial piece (the pawn) right at the opening of the game, this is done to gain advantage as the game progresses and leave the opponent without many strategies to attack while we make our way with our pieces to somehow corner the opponent.

The Queen's Gambit is made with the moves 1.d4 d5; 2.c4 which is not properly a Gambit since it does not sacrifice a pawn at all but it does put you in a dangerous position that can then result in many variations and defenses that lead the game to any kind of result.

This is more or less what I could understand of the concept, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong as I haven't played chess for a long time so I could be wrong.
