ENGLISH

Within Netflix series we can find an endless number of stories, based on real or fictional facts, according to the source of inspiration, however, there is a saying that goes: "Reality beats fiction", and this is very true, but more shocking is when reality and fiction come together to give us an amazing show, and this is where Alex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato (La Casa de Papel and Vis a Vis), bring us a tragicomedy full of action, adventure, some romance and lots and lots of violence.

Sky Rojo, is a Spanish series for the Netflix platform, with only one season (for the moment) of 8 chapters of 25 minutes. It was created and produced by Alex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, and directed by Juan Salvador López and Eduardo Chapero-Jackson. The series was developed on location in Madrid and Tenerife, exposing dramatic and action elements, which its creators call "Latin Pulp".

The story is about three prostitutes; a Spanish (Coral), a Cuban (Gina) and an Argentinean (Wendy), who escape from their brothel for attacking Romeo, their pimp, from that moment on they are pursued by Moisés and Christian; Romeo's henchmen. The three unfortunate women must face lurid situations in search of their freedom, preventing their furious pimp from finding them to murder them.

Although the series has had its good reviews, it also has its bad reviews. Some of them talk about the tremendous similarity it has with La Casa de Papel, but of course, many people will say that it is because it was made by the same creators, but this is a point against it since we do not see anything new that we have not seen in the stories of Alex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato.

In the first instance, we notice that the story is also narrated by a woman (Coral), one of the protagonists of the series, something that we had already seen in La Casa de Papel and that within the scenography does not stimulate us something new. The next thing we noticed and, in addition, for this the series has been criticized quite a lot, is that it is not made from the female point of view, but male, although the work was also created by a woman, we do not see that this is a major influence that stands out.

One of the aspects that most caught my attention in this first season, is the human side of both parties. The prostitutes of the brothel "Las Novias", the place where this story begins, are women victims of a white slave trade, brought from different Latin American countries as a promise to work as "waitresses" in Spain, the worst of all is that Romeo's henchmen offered large amounts of money to the families of these girls to take them from their homes; emphasizing, of course, that they are people of low income.

Returning to the theme of the human side of both parties, as the series develops, we find that both the pimps and the prostitutes have lived strong experiences during their lives; for example, in the case of Romeo, the cruelest of all the villains, we find that he has a family and a wife who recently died of cancer, leaving his two daughters motherless. From this moment on, the series reveals certain things to us, such as the intimacy between Romeo and one of his prostitutes after that tragedy, and the same intimacy that Moisés, Romeo's closest henchman, had with that same person.

Within those scenarios we see elements of an impossible romance, dramatic, quite rapacious in the sense that we would have liked to see much more, leaving us with the feeling of what would have happened if things had not taken the course they did, but the series leaves us with a bad taste in our mouths, since the idea of impossible love is always present between these two Spanish creators.

If the series had been made more under the male perspective, how would it be, maybe we would see a Pulp world of braver and more empowered women than in Sky Rojo, and a world where pimps and brothel customers, do not have a human side, they would only be cruel villains who seek only to satisfy their desires, without caring about the lives of prostitutes or whoever crosses their path.

Although I found the series good to a certain extent, I must confess that I loved the photography, the subdued colors, the contrasts typical of an Almodovesque or Tarantinesque action series and the angles of the scenarios that became very easy to appreciate in their full extent. I could give it the highest rating if its similarity with La Casa de Papel was not so notorious, I think they should have given it a different essence that identifies it more instead of giving it a feature almost the same as its previous success.
