[ENG-ESP] SERIES REVIEW: 'SWEET HOME', TERROR FROM HOME

After watching 'Alice in Borderland', a Japanese series on the Netflix platform, the streaming service did not hesitate to put on the table several Asian series that according to my tastes would please me, and among the list of recommendations was this entertaining South Korean horror series 'Sweet Home', which caught my attention because of its creepy cover.

Looking at some reviews, I was intrigued that it was based on an eponymous 'webtoon' by Kim Kan-bi and Hwang Young-chan. A 'webtoon', for those unfamiliar, is a digital comic created in South Korea, which differs from 'webcomics' by the simple detail that each episode is presented on a single page, being comfortable to read on handheld devices such as digital 'smartphones' or 'tablets'. The series was released on Netflix on December 18, 2020, being one of the most watched series by the end of last year.

Después de ver ‘Alice in Borderland’, una serie japonesa de la plataforma de Netflix, el servicio de Streaming no dudó en ponerme sobre la mesa varias series asiáticas que según mis gustos me agradarían, y entre la lista de recomendaciones se encontraba esta entretenida serie surcoreana de terror ‘Sweet Home’, que me llamó la atención por su portada escalofriante.

Al ver algunas reseñas, me intrigó que estuviera basada en un ‘webtoon’ homónimo de Kim Kan-bi y Hwang Young-chan. Un ‘webtoon’, para los desconocedores, es un comic digital creado en Corea del Sur, el cual se diferencia de los ‘webcomics’ por el sencillo detalle que cada episodio está presentado en una sola página, siendo cómodos de leer en dispositivos manuales como ‘smartphones’ o ‘tablets’ digitales. La serie fue estrenada en Netflix el 18 de diciembre del 2020, siendo una de las más vistas para finales del año pasado.

The story, in many details, is not original at all, we have the protagonist, Cha Hyun-soo (Song Kang), a suicidal 17-year-old boy who moves into an apartment after the death of his family in a terrible car accident. Soon, terrifying events begin to occur inside his building, where he will have to avoid horrible monsters along with the residents of the place to survive.

Within the development of the plot we can find a 'Resident Evil' style world or a dementia similar to the movie 'REC' or an extremely strong madness like that of the video game 'Outlast', where there are enemies everywhere, which are not the typical zombies of 'World War Z' or 'The Walking dead' that seek to devour the characters, but we will find infected people who are transformed into horrible creatures of different shapes and sizes, dominant in a post-apocalyptic world where human life is scarce.

La historia, en muchos detalles, no es para nada original, tenemos al protagonista, Cha Hyun-soo (Song Kang), un chico de 17 años suicida que se muda a un apartamento después de la muerte de su familia en un terrible accidente automovilístico. Pronto, empiezan a ocurrir espantosos acontecimientos dentro de su edificio, en el que tendrá que evitar horribles monstruos junto a los residentes del lugar para sobrevivir.

Dentro del desarrollo de la trama podemos encontrar un mundo al estilo ‘Resident Evil’ o una demencia similar a la película ‘REC’ o una locura sumamente fuerte como la del videojuego ‘Outlast’, donde existen enemigos por doquier, que no son lo típicos zombis de ‘Guerra Mundial Z’ o ‘The Walking dead’ que buscan devorar a los personajes, sino que encontraremos gente infectada que se transforma en horribles criaturas de diferentes formas y tamaños, dominantes de un mundo post-apocalíptico donde escasea la vida humana.

The idea of the series is very well done, although the style and cinematography lacked things to exclude and others to add, the producers took too many risks with the use of CGI to create some representations identical to that of the webtoon. It would be irrelevant to think that the 'live action' is an exact copy of the manga, so we must get rid of that mistake in our heads and focus mostly on the development of the situation.

Although we have interesting characters, such as the protagonist himself: Cha Hyun-soo, his role as the shy and quiet boy who finds it too difficult to relate to others leaves much to be desired, but despite that, he is the last hope of the survivors of the building, since by acquiring the "virus" our hero created a kind of immunity, assimilating it for his own benefit by developing strange abilities, but what does not stop bothering is that attitude of arbitrary recklessness that only appears in moments of action.

Another interesting character who, I thought, would have more prominence within the story is Pyeon Sang-wook (Lee Jin-wook), a mysterious man who lives inside the building, whom everyone distrusts because of his "gangster-like" lifestyle, being in reality an individual who only fights evil with evil. For the story, I would have liked the character to have much more prominence, since he is one of the few capable of fighting monsters.

La idea de la serie está muy bien hecha, aunque al estilo y la cinematografía le faltaron cosas por excluir y otras por agregar, los productores se arriesgaron demasiado con el uso del ‘CGI’ para crear algunas representaciones idénticas a la del ‘webtoon’. Sería irrelevante pensar que el ‘live action’ es una copia exacta del manga, por lo que debemos despojarnos de ese error en la cabeza y centrarnos más que todo en el desarrollo de la situación.

Aunque tenemos personajes interesantes, como el propio protagonista: Cha Hyun-soo, su papel como el chico tímido y callado al que se le dificulta demasiado relacionarse con los demás deja mucho que desear, pero que a pesar de eso, es la última esperanza de los sobrevivientes del edificio, puesto que al adquirir el “virus” nuestro héroe creó una especie de inmunidad, asimilándolo para beneficio propio desarrollando extrañas habilidades, pero lo que no deja de molestar es esa actitud de temerario arbitraria que solo aparece en momentos de acción.

Otro personaje interesante que, pensé que tendría más protagonismo dentro la historia es Pyeon Sang-wook (Lee Jin-wook), un misterioso hombre que vive dentro del edificio, al que todos le tienen desconfianza por su estilo de vida parecida a la de un “gánster”, siendo en realidad un individuo que solo combate el mal con el mal. Para la historia, me hubiera gustado que el personaje tuviera mucho más protagonismo, puesto que es uno de los pocos capaces de combatir a los monstruos.

Then we have Seo Yi-kyeong (Lee Si-young), a former firefighter with great survival skills whose fiancé disappears two days before the wedding. Although this character does not originally appear in the webtoon, I liked the producers' willingness to include her, giving her 'John McClane' or 'Sarah Connor' from 'Terminator' type skills, being one of the most suitable characters for this kind of story.

There are other characters with a better quality of interest, which surpass even the presence of the protagonist, however, it seems that Asians are more interested in the typical asocial boy with mental disorders as the main axis, which is already something too trite.

Although the story of the series and its plot are quite interesting, there are moments that seem like copies of movies like 'Alien, the return (1985)' and pop music that emerges in the moments of action, irrelevant things that I do not see sense that are intertwined within the story.

'Sweet Home' is a story with a world devastated by a virus that turns people into monsters, and it would have been a great film project if they had turned it into a movie or a miniseries of 5 or 6 chapters at most, because during the development of each episode of 54 minutes, the series becomes heavy until its fourth chapter where it loses interest, perhaps it happens to few like me, who would have preferred something shorter and more precise since I like this kind of genres that have that combination of gore, horror and drama.

Luego tenemos a Seo Yi-kyeong (Lee Si-young), una ex bombera con grandes habilidades de supervivencia cuyo prometido desaparece a dos días antes de la boda. Aunque este personaje originalmente no aparece en el ‘webtoon’, me gustó la disposición de los productores por incluirla, otorgándole habilidades tipo ‘Jhon McClane’ o ‘Sarah Connor’ de ‘Terminator’, siendo una de los personajes más adecuados para este tipo de historias.

Existen otros personajes con mejor calidad de interés, que superan incluso la presencia del protagonista, sin embargo, parece que a los asiáticos les interesa más el típico chico asocial con trastornos mentales como eje principal, lo cual ya es algo demasiado trillado.

Aunque la historia de la serie y su trama son bastante interesantes, existen momentos que parecen copias de películas como ‘Alien, el regreso (1985)’ y música pop que emerge en los momentos de acción, cosas irrelevantes a las que no les veo sentido que se entrelacen dentro de la historia.

‘Sweet Home’ es una historia con una mundo devastado a causa de un virus que convierte a las personas en monstruos, y hubiera sido un gran proyecto cinematográfico si la hubieran convertido en una película o una miniserie de 5 o 6 capítulos a lo mucho, ya que durante el desarrollo de cada episodio de 54 minutos, la serie se va volviendo pesada hasta su cuarto capítulo donde va perdiendo interés, quizás le pasa a pocos como a mí, que hubiera preferido algo más corto y preciso ya que me gustan este tipo de géneros que tienen esa combinación de gore, horror y drama.
