Perhaps Netflix does not have a good reputation for producing horror movies, or rather, for producing good content in general. The hype has made such bad series as "La Casa de Papel" or "Elite" expand to a high degree of popularity, but that's another matter. There are times when the streaming platform surprises us with very good unreleased material, although it is not so much the case of this movie to be discussed, I must say that, of everything I've seen so far in the horror genre, this movie left me with flashes that even I didn't expect myself.

Quizás Netflix no tenga buena reputación en cuanto a producir cine de terror, o mejor dicho, en producir buen contenido en general. La publicidad ha hecho que series tan malas como “La Casa de Papel” o “Elite” se expandieran a un alto grado de popularidad, pero eso es otra cosa. Hay veces que la plataforma de streaming nos sorprende con material inédito muy bueno, aunque no es tanto el caso de esta película a tratar, debo decir que, de todo lo que he visto hasta ahora en el género de terror, esta película me dejó con flashes que ni yo mismo me esperaba.

No One Gets Out Alive, is a British film released at the end of September this year for the streaming platform for movies and series Netflix. It was produced by The Imaginarium and directed by Santiago Menghini. The screenplay was written by Fernanda Coppel and Jon Croke, based on the novel of the same name by Adam Nevill: The Ritual. It stars Cristina Rodlo as Ambar, Marc Menchaca as Red and David Figlioli as Becker. Cinematography was done by Stephen Murphy. Currently, the film continues to trend worldwide within the Netflix platform.

Synopsis

After the painful death of her mother, a Mexican girl moves to the United States, specifically to the city of Cleveland, Ohio, to try to change her life with the so-called "American Dream". Without legal documents, she gets a job in a textile factory where the workers are exploited and paid only minimum wage. To stay a little longer, he gets a room in a shady-looking house where only women are housed. During her stay there, things start to get creepy; the girl begins to have strange dreams, hear screams for help and see spectral shadows looming outside her room: will she manage to escape the terrifying situations she will have to face later on?

Sinopsis

Luego de la dolorosa muerte de su madre, una chica mexicana se traslada a Estados Unidos, específicamente en la ciudad de Cleveland, Ohio, para intentar cambiar su vida con el llamado “Sueño americano”. Sin documentos legales, consigue trabajo en una fábrica textil donde explotan a sus trabajadores cobrando solo un sueldo mínimo. Para quedarse un poco más, consigue habitación en una casa con aspecto tenebroso en donde solo albergan mujeres. Durante su estadía en el lugar, las cosas comienzan a ponerse escalofriantes; la chica empieza a tener sueños extraños, escuchar gritos auxilio y ver sombras espectrales asomándose en las afueras de su habitación: ¿Logrará escapar de las terroríficas situaciones en las que deberá enfrentarse más adelante?

Personal opinion

I may miss a spoiler or two, so if you haven't seen the film, I'll refrain from reading this personal opinion. From the beginning, the film leaves little mystery as to what will happen next, and we get a sense of that as the protagonist moves into a house so spooky that I would never (no matter how cheap the rent) move into.

From the beginning, one realizes or has an idea of what is going on there, the signs are very clear, we will only be left to find out the real enigma that lies beneath the crumbling floors of that haunted house. While, the performances of the cast were convincing enough to give me a warning of concern, the classic elements within the filmography were a bit disappointing; such as the lights flickering or going out completely, it seems to me that this is already a very worn out resource.

What did raise my expectations a bit, was the original story, the script seems to be well elaborated, it even made me want to read Nevill's novel, but I feel that there were things that didn't convince me much, like the computer made monster; it reminded me of a creature from the Silent Hill universe. I think the production wanted to develop something different within the haunted house theme, there should not only be blood, ghosts trapped in a limbo of no return, dementia and among other things, there should also be a connectivity between the characters and the events of their past.

At this point, the development of the main character, her story and the supernatural events in which she is subjected, convinced me too much, since it is necessary to pay attention to this since it will be transcendental for our heroine to succeed.

I must emphasize that what I liked the most was the photographic part, it is dark and gloomy, set in a cold environment like the city of Cleveland; although I read somewhere that the film was shot in Romania, that adds more points, I mean, what country is more gloomy than Romania?

I think the production did a decent job in not letting too much mystery slip away, as that would kill the tension and ghostly atmosphere within each scene, until leaving us at the final point, where we are left with the unknown as to whether the heroine will now become a villain. I must say that I liked that twist at the end and it made me think a lot of things, such as: "That they are not going to make a sequel".

Opinión personal

Puede que se me escape uno que otro spoiler, así que, si no han visto la película, les abstengo a leer esta opinión personal. Desde el principio, el filme deja poco misterio de lo que posteriormente ocurrirá, y nos podremos percatar de eso ya que la protagonista se muda a una casa tan tenebrosa en la que yo jamás (ni por más barata que sea la renta) me mudaría.

Desde el inicio, uno se da cuenta o tiene una idea de lo que está ocurriendo allí, las señales son muy claras, solo nos quedaremos para averiguar el enigma real que subyace bajo los suelos derruidos de aquella casa encantada. Si bien, las actuaciones del elenco fueron lo bastante convincentes para darme una alerta de preocupación, los elementos clásicos dentro de la filmografía eran un poco decepcionantes; como las luces que parpadean o se apagan completamente, me parece que este ya es un recurso muy desgastado.

Lo que si elevó un poco mis expectativas, era la historia original, el guion parece estar bien elaborado, incluso me dieron ganas de leer la novela de Nevill, pero siento que hubo cosas que no me convencieron mucho, como el monstruo hecho a computadora; me hizo recordar a una criatura del universo de Silent Hill. Pienso que la producción deseaba desarrollar algo diferente dentro de la temática de casas encantadas, no solo debía haber sangre, fantasmas atrapados en un limbo sin retorno, demencia y entre otras cosas, también debía existir una conectividad entre los personajes y los sucesos de su pasado.

En este punto, el desarrollo del personaje principal, su historia y los sucesos sobrenaturales en la que se encuentra sometida, me lograron convencer demasiado, ya que hay que prestar atención en esto puesto que será trascendental para que nuestra heroína logre triunfar.

Debo recalcar que lo que más me gustó fue la parte fotográfica, es oscura y tenebrosa, desenvuelta en un ambiente frío como es la ciudad de Cleveland; aunque leí en por ahí que la película fue rodada en Rumania, eso le suma más puntos, es decir; ¿qué país es más lúgubre que Rumania?

Pienso que la producción hizo un trabajo decente en no dejar que se les escape mucho misterio, ya que eso acabaría con la tensión y el ambiente fantasmal dentro de cada escena, hasta dejarnos en el punto final, donde nos quedamos con la incógnita de que si la heroína ahora se convertirá en villana. Debo decir que ese giro en el final me gustó y me hizo pensar muchas cosas, como por ejemplo: “Que no vayan a sacar segunda parte”.

Conclusions

It's not the most impressive movie in the world, but it has a strong, coherent story, and if you think about it, it's more complex than it seems. Not only are there the elements that surround the lives of the characters, but the chronological aspects that managed to structure the plot with genius. Using essentially a piece of Aztec mythology, to give free rein to all the nitty-gritty and madness, I found it quite interesting and on top of that we have very real performances, especially by the main protagonist. I would recommend it and I already understand why it's trending on Netflix, it's entertaining for a night off but not for horror.

Conclusiones

No es la película más impresionante del mundo, pero tiene una historia fuerte, coherente, y si te pones a pensarla bien, es más compleja de lo que parece. No solo están los elementos que rodean la vida de los personajes, sino los aspectos cronológicos que lograron estructurar con genialidad la trama. Utilizar en esencia un trozo de la mitología azteca, para darle rienda suelta a todo el meollo y a la locura, me pareció bastante interesante y encima tenemos actuaciones muy reales, especialmente por parte de la protagonista principal. Yo la recomendaría y ya comprendo porque se encuentra en tendencia en Netflix, es entretenida para una noche libre fuera de la rutina pero no para el terror.
