This South Korean film released in November 2020 (although initially the date was for 2019) with the plot that I love so much: mystery, horror, suspense and psychological thriller, is based on Matthew Parkhill's The Caller. Director Lee Chung-hyun proves that he can link two themes that seem to be incompatible: different timelines and horror, playing with our minds throughout the film and leaving us breathless occasionally (it happened to me many times). The creativity to be able to logically narrate the control of temporal breaks under the suspense, is incredible. At all times you can feel the fear in the performances in such a way that it could easily be cut. But I can't take it anymore, I want to tell you how I felt and what I thought as the hours went by watching it (yes, hours, because I had to pause several times to get some tension out and breathe a little calmer).
Este film surcoreano estrenado en Noviembre del 2020 (aunque inicialmente la fecha era para el 2019) con la trama que tanto me encanta: misterio, terror, suspenso y thriller psicológico, está basada en The Caller de Matthew Parkhill. El director Lee Chung-hyun demuestra que puede ligar dos temáticas que parecen ser incompatibles: líneas temporales distintas y terror, jugando con nuestra mente durante toda la película y dejándonos sin aliento ocasionalmente (me pasó muchas veces). La creatividad para poder narrar lógicamente el control de las rupturas temporales bajo el suspenso, es increíble. En todo momento puedes sentir el miedo en las actuaciones de tal manera que se podría cortar fácilmente. Pero no me aguanto más, quiero contarles cómo me sentí y lo que pensé mientras pasaban las horas viéndola (sí, horas, porque tenía que pausar varias veces para poder sacar un poco de tensión y respirar un poco más tranquila).

Kim Seo-yon goes to visit her sick mother with whom she doesn't have a good relationship because she blames her mom for her father's death. The house in question is (strangely enough) in a rural area a bit out of town and is very abandoned, almost destroyed by neglect, he fixes it up and gets an old phone that still has a ringtone. She begins to receive strange calls from a desperate woman asking for help, she thinks it is a prank call and pays no attention; after a few days, the calls continue and Seo-yeon discovers that the other girl next to the line is living in the same house but 10 years earlier called Young-sook. The two women communicate constantly and even create a friendly relationship.

Kim Seo-yon va a visitar a su madre enferma con la cual no tiene una buena relación porque culpa a su mamá de la muerte de su padre. La casa en cuestión queda (como cosa rara) en una zona rural algo apartada del pueblo y está muy abandonada, casi destruida por el abandono, la va acondicionando y consigue un viejo teléfono que aún tiene tono. Comienza a recibir llamadas extrañas de una mujer desesperada pidiendo ayuda, ella cree que es una broma telefónica y no hace caso; al cabo de unos días, las llamadas continúan y Seo-yeon descubre que le otra chica al lado de la línea está viviendo en la misma casa pero 10 años antes llamada Young-sook. Ambas mujeres se comunican constantemente y hasta llegan a crear una relación de amistad.

Up to this point, the story creates a hint of uncertainty because as the days go by, Young-sook becomes more and more dependent on her friend from the future, which is understandable because she lives mistreated by her mother and won't even let her leave the house. They discover that, although they are separated by time, they can break that line and cross the space to be able to leave each other gifts; and that is where Yougn-sook proposes her to save Seo-yeon's father. It is from here that Seo-yeon's life changes, her father returns and her family is happy and united, but at the same time she pushes Young-sook away, causing Young-sook to want to claim certain favors (she's becoming a bitch, or was she already like that?).

Hasta aquí, la historia nos crea un dejo de incertidumbre porque a medida que van pasando los días, Young-sook se va volviendo más y más dependiente de su amiga del futuro, lo cual se entiende porque ella vive maltrata por su madre y no la deja ni salir de la casa. Descubren que, aunque están separadas por el tiempo, pueden romper esa línea y cruzar el espacio para poder dejarse regalos; y ahí es donde Yougn-sook le propone salvar al padre de Seo-yeon. Es a partir de aquí donde le cambia la vida a Seo-yeon, su padre regresa y su familia es feliz y unida, pero al mismo tiempo va apartando a Young-sook, provocando que esta última quiera reclamar ciertos favores (se va volviendo unamaldita¿o ya era así?).

Seo-yeon is curious to meet Young-sook in the present, and we know that nowadays it's very easy to get anyone through social media, but strangely he couldn't get her anywhere; he even tried to change the way he spelled her name but to no avail. He finally finds out that she died at the hands of his mother and that the day of her death was near, so he thought it was the chance to return the favor and not bother her anymore... big mistake. Young-sook ends up killing his mother brutally and hides her body in the fridge, threatens to kill Seo-yeon's parents to keep helping her to escape from the police, she doesn't and in revenge goes to find her parents and kills them too, changing Seo-yeon's life again. He gives her one last chance to help him cover up the crimes or else he will do the same to her and the hunt begins between the two leaving an ending not at all expected by us.
Puntos débiles
Seo-yeon siente curiosidad por conocer a Young-sook en el presente, y ya sabemos que en la actualidad es muy fácil conseguir a quien sea por las redes sociales, pero extrañamente no la conseguía en ninguna parte; intentó cambiar incluso la manera de escribir su nombre pero no conseguí ningún resultado. Finalmente descubre que murió a manos de su madre y que el día de su muerte estaba cerca, así que pensó que era la oportunidad para regresar el favor y no la molestara más… gran error. Young-sook termina matando a su madre brutalmente y esconde su cuerpo en la nevera, amenaza de muerte a los padres de Seo-yeon para que la siga ayudando para escapar de la policía, ésta no lo hace y en venganza va a buscar a sus padres y también los asesina, cambiando nuevamente la vida de Seo-yeon. Le da una última oportunidad para que le ayude a encubrir los crímenes o sino hará lo mismo con ella y comienza la cacería entre las dos dejando un final nada esperado por nosotros.
Truly, a well made and very well narrated movie, every part and every emotion shown by Seo-yeon I could feel it. And even though the time shots vary almost without warning, the viewer doesn't lose the line. I have always liked South Korean films of this kind, they are excellent at touching every fiber of whoever watches them, so as I always tell you: if you haven't seen it, I recommend it 100% and if you have already seen it, watch it again, you can't miss it at all.
De verdad, una película bien hecha y muy bien narrada, cada parte y cada emoción mostrada por Seo-yeon la pude sentir. Y a pesar de que los planos de tiempo varían casi sin previo aviso, el espectador no pierde la línea. Siempre me han gustado los films surcoreanos de este tipo, son excelentes a la hora de tocar cada fibra de quien los mire, así que como siempre les digo: si no la han visto, se las recomiendo 100% y si ya la vieron, véanla otra vez, no tiene pérdida de nada.
