In general terms, I like to appreciate realistic cinema, which in many cases is pessimistic, showing us a harsh reality that few are able of accepting and only elude through ephemeral fantasies.
Capernaum is one of those films where rawness is the main active component of its content. A film that can open our eyes to the misery that exists in many parts of the world and the chaos that a poor, hungry and sick society can be.
The film begins by introducing us to a boy named Zain who is in court for having stabbed a man, however, he is the complainant: He denounces his parents for having brought him into the world under subhuman conditions.
En líneas generales me gusta apreciar el cine de corte realista que en muchos casos es pesimista, mostrándonos una cruda realidad que pocos son capaces de aceptar y solo la eluden a través de fantasías efímeras.
Capernaum es una de esas películas en donde la crudeza es el principal componente activo de su contenido. Una película que nos puede abrir los ojos ante la miseria que se vive en muchas partes del mundo y la caótica que puede ser una sociedad pobre, hambrienta y enferma.
La película inicia presentándonos a un chico llamado Zain que se encuentra en la corte por haber acuchillado a un hombre, sin embargo él es el denunciante: Denuncia a sus padres por haberlo traído al mundo bajo condiciones infrahumanas.
After this little snack, the film directed by Nadjne Labaki shows us the whole process to get to this point. Zain's past, the misery in which he lives but above all the act that prompted this child who has no identification, to stab a man.
Zain lived with his parents and a bunch of siblings crammed into a house where laziness was the daily bread. Sahar his sister, spent a lot of time with him, both sold juices in the streets and made an effort to survive. The situation is complicated when Sahar has her first period at the young age of 11 and under a primitive system she is already a prospect to marry.
Después de este pequeño abrebocas la cinta dirigida por Nadjne Labaki, nos muestra todo el proceso para llegar a este punto. El pasado de Zain, la miseria en que vive pero sobre todo el acto que impulso a este niño que no tiene ni identificación, a acuchillar a un hombre.
Zain vivía con sus padres y un montón de hermanos hacinados en una casa en donde la desidia era el pan de cada día. Sahar su hermana, compartía mucho tiempo con él, ambos vendían jugos en las calles y hacían un esfuerzo por sobrevivir. La situación se complica cuando Sahar tiene su primer periodo a la corta edad de 11 años y bajo un sistema primitivo ya es prospecto para casarse.
Her parents are quick to sell her as a marriage, claiming that she will have a better life with her husband. Zain does not accept that reality and tries by all possible means to flee with his sister, but he is just a child and the die was already cast for Sahar. Zain decides to run away from home and begins a long journey through the streets, hunger, misery and desolation.
Soon he meets another important character in this story who is Rahil, an immigrant from Ethiopia who also does not have a legal identification. The two become good friends and Rahil entrusts Zain with the care of her baby while she works, but Rahil is arrested for lack of documents and Zain took care of the baby not knowing what had happened to his mother.
Sus padres no tardan en venderla como matrimonio, alegando que tendrá una mejor vida con su esposo. Zain no acepta esa realidad e intenta por todos los medios posibles huir con su hermana, pero es apenas un niño y la suerte ya estaba echada para Sahar. Zain decide huir de casa y empieza un largo viaje entre las calles, hambre, miseria y desolación.
Pronto se encuentra con otro personaje importante en esta historia que es Rahil, una inmigrante de Etiopia que tampoco tiene una identificación legal. Ambos se hacen buenos amigos y Rahil le confía a Zain el cuidado de su bebe mientras ella trabaja, pero Rahil es detenida por falta de documentos y Zain se hizo cargo del bebe no sabiendo que había ocurrido con su madre.
The whole movie can produce a strong commotion. The reality of extreme poverty in which we live in many countries makes us reflect on how lucky many of us are and how we make ourselves blind to such a situation. The life of Zain that apparently being 12 years old he had to face is almost inerrable. We can see many of the worst situations that a child of his age can face here. Sales of drugs to survive, humiliation, beatings and the death of his sister was the climax for him and what caused him to stab her husband.
I have said in previous posts that I firmly oppose traditions of this type, I mean forced marriages and even worse between minors. An 11-year-old girl will never be physically or mentally prepared to deal with the complicated situations of a marriage.
The life of many children on the street is raw and society is cruel to them for being seen as a nuisance or parasites that just go around begging, but the reality is that we have no idea what these children suffer and of course that such a life Heavy and cruel make their personalities change forever in many cases, never being able to recover their childhood.
Toda la película puede producir una fuerte conmoción. La realidad de extrema pobreza en que se vive en muchos países nos hace reflexionar en cuan afortunados somos muchos de nosotros y como nos hacemos los ciegos ante semejante situación. La vida de Zain que aparentemente teniendo 12 años tuvo que afrontar es casi inerrable. Muchas de las peores situaciones que puede afrontar un niño de su edad las podremos ver aquí. Ventas de drogas para sobrevivir, humillaciones, golpes y la muerte de su hermana fue el climax para él y lo que condiciono a que acuchillara al esposo de ella.
He dicho en anteriores post que me opongo firmemente ante tradiciones de este tipo, me refiero a los matrimonios forzados y aun peor entre menores de edad. Una niña de 11 años jamás estará preparada ni físicamente ni mentalmente para abordar las complicadas situaciones de un matrimonio.
La vida de muchos niños en la calle es cruda y la sociedad cruel con ellos por ser vistos como un estorbo o parásitos que solo andan mendigando, pero la realidad es que no tenemos idea de lo que sufren estos niños y por supuesto que una vida tan pesada y cruel hacen que sus personalidades cambien para siempre en muchos casos no pudiendo recuperar su niñez jamás.
Labaki knew how to play with this whole scenario, placing heartbreaking, dramatic scenes in front of our eyes and putting us in the shoes of this child who did not choose to live in such misery.
On the other hand, we have a clear message that the Lebanese director offers us, do not have children if you do not have the necessary conditions to give them a healthy life. It is very common that the poorer a place is, the more children there are per family and it is somewhat contradictory but it is part of the mentality that these families have.
Capernaum without a doubt gives us a reality slap to each of the spectators who have seen it. At the Cannes festival he won the jury prize and this is one of the festivals that I respect the most. Without any doubt I consider this one of the best films that I have seen not only from the East but in general terms. The sensitivity that Labaki offers us with such a heartbreaking plot in lands so exotic for us who live in the West is something that I have rarely seen.
Labaki supo jugar con todo este escenario, colocando frente a nuestros ojos escenas desgarradoras, dramáticas y poniéndonos en la piel de este niño que no eligió vivir en semejante miseria.
Por otro lado tenemos un claro mensaje que la directora libanesa nos ofrece, no tengas hijos sino tienes las condiciones necesarias para darles una vida sana. Es muy común que entre más pobre sea un lugar más hijos allá por familia y es algo contradictorio pero es parte de la mentalidad que estas familias tienen.
Capernaum sin lugar a dudas nos da una bofetada de realidad a cada uno de los espectadores que la hemos visto. En el festival de Cannes se llevó el premio del jurado y este es uno de los festivales que más respeto. Sin ningún tipo de duda considero esta una de las mejores películas que he visto no solo de oriente sino en términos generales. La sensibilidad que nos ofrece Labaki con una trama tan desgarradora en tierras tan exóticas para nosotros los que vivimos en occidente es algo que he visto pocas veces.
Another important issue addressed by this production is child trafficking. Rahil had been harassed many times by a subject who sold false documents for immigrants. He constantly asked her to sell his son to him so that he could give him to people who would take better care of him, the rest of the story he left for when they see the movie.
In conclusion, Capernaum is a film that cannot leave anyone indifferent. It addresses important issues such as poverty, pedophilia, child trafficking, etc. A film that is not easy to digest, like City of God, because it puts us in the shoes of children who have stolen their innocence. This is another one of those movies that I recommend with my eyes closed but besides that it is a title that I have seen more than 3 times, making it one of my favorites.
Otro tema importante que aborda esta producción es el tráfico de niños. Rahil había sido acosada muchas veces por un sujeto que vendía documentos falsos para inmigrantes. El constantemente le pedía que le vendiera a su hijo para podérselo dar a personas que se encargarían mejor de él, el resto de la historia se las dejo para cuando vean la película.
En conclusión, Capernaum es una película que no puede dejar a nadie indiferente. Aborda temas de importancia como la pobreza, la pedofilia, el tráfico de niños, etc. Una película que no es fácil de digerir, como Ciudad de Dios, porque nos pone en la piel de niños que les han robado su inocencia. Esta es otra de esas películas que recomiendo con los ojos cerrados pero además de eso es un título que he visto más de 3 veces, convirtiéndola en una de mis favoritas.
