Reseña Dorama
"Miau: El chico secreto"

Review Dorama
"Meow: The secret boy"

Well, I want to share with you that this is a very cute and a bit fictional dorama. I loved it completely and with just the first chapter it grabbed me. I am an animal lover and specifically a cat lover, so you can imagine how excited I was watching this dorama. I had this urge to watch it every day without fail, but I also wanted to delay the arrival of the last chapter. I guess because all good things sometimes end quickly.

"Meow: The Secret Boy" covers the story of Hong Jo, a cat who is temporarily able to become human and slowly starts to feel very strong emotions for his temporary caretaker, Kim Sol Ah. He is very tender and doesn't know much about human life or how he should behave, so he slowly learns some things without his temporary caretaker realizing it. She is adamant that she doesn't like cats or people who have personality traits in common with these felines. However, after a while, she begins to accept the calm white furball who watches her all the time with a lot of curiosity. She begins to have feelings for Hong Jo (the name she gives the cat) and he will do his best to stay by her side.

It has drama, comedy, romance and fantasy. And it only has 24 episodes of about half an hour each. I was completely enthralled by it and wish it had never ended. I must also add, that I liked the way, not in which they label but in which they show, certain similar traits between people and canines or felines. Because in real life you also see a bit of that, I don't know if you understand me, but ok.

The main and secondary characters (friends of the protagonist and the antagonist) are very harmonious and contribute a lot to the story. The whole plot is very well handled, keeping in mind that it's a bit of a fantasy because of the "some of those things don't happen in real life" theme, or do they?

There are many online sites where you can watch this dorama, but I sincerely recommend Rakuten Viki. It is a very good (recommended to me by one of my best friends) fan-driven TV app, containing Korean, Chinese and Japanese TV series and movies. It has over 10 million downloads on the Play Store and a 4.2 star rating. I've watched almost all of the doramas here.

Resumen Dorama
"Miau: El chico secreto"

Dorama Summary
"Meow: The secret boy"
[Maximum spoiler alert]

Kim Sol Ah is our protagonist, a graphic designer. She is in love with our antagonist Lee Jae-seon. A love that could never really be given, so it becomes unrequited. The fact is that Lee Jae-seon has a cat. But, he's allergic. How did that happen? Well, he gave a cat to his ex-girlfriend when they were still together, but she abandoned him and the cat too. So he needs someone he can trust to take care of him. That's where our protagonist comes in and accepts the responsibility of taking care of it temporarily.

So far so good. And then? Well, it turns out that our little furry one can "by fate and life" become human. Something he has no control over and that leaves him a bit confused.

The story covers a lot of how he must deal with the changes and the things he must face in order to become human. It so happens that between Lee Jae-seon and Hong Jo, an alliance of sorts begins to form based on a secret. Well, Lee Jae-seon finds out that Hong Jo can become human but they don't know how to explain it to Kim Sol Ah. Also... Becoming human is not permanent and let's say as "borrowed time". There's also the fact that since he's a small cat, his life expectancy won't be as long as they might want it to be. Adding also that Hong Jo would age much faster than his temporary caretaker and the girl he has fallen in love with.

At the beginning Lee Jae-seon expresses himself very distant and even a bit hateful to our protagonist Kim Sol Ah. There's a lot going on in between, so it doesn't quite amount to a love trio. In fact, even though Kim Sol Ah and Lee Jae-seon have known each other since school, as the story unfolds, she understands a lot of things on an introspective level. For she starts to value herself and realize that she is the only one who feels something in that "we could be a little more than friends" relationship. So I consider that it's also an evolution of her character when you accept something that only subtracts you on an emotional level. It's very nice.

A good observation is that in most series, movies or doramas, the guy at some point "screws up," but here that doesn't really happen. Hong Jo is super attentive to her, super tender and always supported her in everything. If they got to happen one thing or another it was honestly because it got away from her little paws. And it's a mutual thing, because she was also very attentive to him. I told you, it was all too cute.

A little context and setting....

Okay, she was mainly living with her father, but then he announces he is getting married, so she needs a place to stay. With cat and all her stuff she takes care of her father's now wife's house, since it is uninhabited. Although every so often her son arrives from abroad to visit Korea and then leaves again. This is where she gets a bit confused, because in one of Hong Jo's many transformations, Kim Sol Ah thinks he is her brother-in-law, but to get her out of the mistake is to give more explanation than it would really serve.

As life (or plot) would have it, the small coffee shop across the street from the house he lives in now is none other than the cat's owner's business. As the story progresses, Hong Jo asks Lee Jae-seon to work in the small shop as long as he is human. So he gradually earns money and learns a lot while being close to Kim Sol Ah. Though on a trip the three of them take, to see her father and his wife's new house, she finally discovers the truth that Hong Jo is not her brother-in-law but the white cat she has been caring for so much. At first it is a shock for her, but then she gradually comes to understand many things and accepts her feelings for Hong Jo.

Something important, which I almost forgot, was that there is a malicious man who steals cats and puts them in cages near where Kim Sol Ah lives. It's a complication where the main character tends to be in danger when he falls asleep on the street. It's something that near the end is resolved fairly.

Something important that we discover almost at the end of the dorama is that the first time Hong Jo and Kim Sol Ah see each other is not when she assumes the responsibility of taking care of him when he is a cat, but a long time ago, in fact at that moment Hong Jo becomes a human for the first time, a human child (since he was just a puppy then), and that is when he sees Kim Sol Ah for the first time. One of the downsides, is that when he is in his human form he gets very sleepy and when he falls asleep he turns back into a cat. One thing they never explain as such is why he can turn into a human, but a key point is that as long as he has a Kim Sol Ah belonging he can change without any problems, she is the reason. However, the times when he can turn into a human run out and both protagonists say goodbye in a very cute and a bit sad way, although she promises to wait for him and take great care of him in his cat form no matter what.

After that, there is a small time jump of two years where we are shown the growth of Kim Sol Ah as a person and illustrator, as she manages to publish her children's story (where the white cat is one of the main characters of the story) and do many things.

If only everything would work out as fast as it unravels.... At the end of the dorama, our antagonist Lee Jae-seon talks to Kim Sol Ah and confesses to her that even though she is waiting for someone who may not come (for Hong Jo to become human again), he would like to try to be more than just a friend and that he will always be there for her. Which I found very sad because that's how it really happens, sometimes people want something that is no longer possible to have.

To conclude, Hong Jo and Kim Sol Ah had a little habit of saying "Welcome" to each other when they came home. In the last few minutes of the last episode she comes home (yes, the same house) notices the beautiful white cat on her bed and places her red scarf (which also has history the scarf) on the coat rack. She turns around, takes a few steps and the scarf falls to the floor, they switch shots and Hong Jo appears in her human form again. This is where my heart almost skipped a beat. She smiles at him and says "Welcome", he smiles... and so it ends.

A personal opinion is that who informs Hong Jo (a stray cat who was able to become human when she was younger) what is involved in becoming human, that they age and die faster than humans and who tells her that the time as humans for some cats is fated (some only have a short time and some have a long time) may be an important piece of information for the ending. Why? Because it is very possible that the last time Hong Jo returns as a human, this time he could stay in that form for a long time, that is, several years, which would predict a very nice future between the two protagonists.

Well, it is simply a very beautiful dorama. It didn't have much fame in Korea so they also cut down the episodes, but in Latin America and the US it did very well, so it has a 97% rating according to the critics.

I think I wish they hadn't cut the chapters because I wanted so much more, like how long he would stay this time as a human living together with Kim Sol Ah and they revealed why some cats could turn into people and others couldn't. But overall, I loved it.

Two things I also fell in love with was that at the beginning of each of the episodes they show a quote from some major author directed at cats and their personality or magic. I confess to have saved some of them, because they are really very beautiful. And for the closing of some episodes they show some compilations of interviews of pet owners (both dogs and cats) where they describe their experience and some anecdotes they have lived with their animal companions, which I also found very nice.

It's hard for me to be objective with this dorama because I loved everything about it. Seriously. Excuse me.

I find it a very meaningful gesture that shows that some people don't like animals and can both ignore them and mistreat them, and there is the other side where they have changed the lives of their owners by giving them support, companionship and joy. Two sides of the coin.

What more can I add? I don't know. I really recommend it. It's all very nice.

See you in the next review...
