Some time ago my boyfriend and I stumbled upon a series that would catch us forever, in fact he even reviewed Alice in Boderland a Japanese show with high quality stories and performances. So for a while we started looking for content that resembled the story of that series and in our search we found several options some better than others. Among them were Glitch an Australian paranormal melodrama that disappointed us at the end and finally we saw the disastrous Sweet Home a Korean web series based on a web toon that for me unfortunately left a bad taste in my mouth for its exaggerated rhythm and its horrible soundtrack that didn't allow me to finish watching it.
Alice in Boderland had stayed in our hearts and no one would take it out of there but it's been more than a year since the premiere of the first season, so I was excited when I learned earlier this month that Netflix would release a Korean series of the same genre, although at the same time I doubt that South Korea would manage to grab me as much as Japan did. So we gave a chance to a series that at first seemed to promise nothing but whose script and lack of sympathy for its characters steals your attention from minute 1.
I must say that it has been a journey of 9 chapters that I enjoyed slowly and although I have a long time that I do not write a review in this my favorite community, I consider it is the right time to tell you about this new Netflix show that undoubtedly should become a cult series like many others. But I will not anticipate much, let's get to know together, this new bet of the platform that for better or worse is the most successful.

Hace un tiempo atr谩s mi novio y yo nos topamos con una serie que nos atrapar铆a para siempre, de hecho hasta el realizo una rese帽a de Alice in Boderland un show japon茅s cuya factura es de alta calidad tanto en historias como en actuaciones. As铆 que por un tiempo comenzamos a buscar contenido que se asemejara a la historia de aquella serie y en nuestra b煤squeda encontramos varias opciones unas mejores que otras. Entre ellas estaban Glitch un melodrama paranormal australiano que nos decepcion贸 al final y por ultimo vimos a la desastrosa Sweet Home una serie coreana basada en un web toon que para m铆 desgracia dej贸 un mal sabor de boca por su exagerado ritmo y por su horrible banda sonora que no me permiti贸 terminar de verla.
Alice in Boderland se hab铆a quedado en nuestros corazones y nadie la sacar铆a de ah铆 pero ya ha pasado m谩s de un a帽o del estreno de la primera temporada, as铆 que me emocion茅 cuando supe a principios de mes que Netflix estrenar铆a una serie coreana del mismo g茅nero, aunque al mismo tiempo dude de que Corea del Sur lograra atraparme tanto como lo hizo Jap贸n. As铆 que le dimos una oportunidad a una serie que al principio parec铆a no prometer nada pero cuyo guion y falta de compasi贸n con sus personajes te roba la atenci贸n desde el minuto 1.
Debo decir que ha sido un viaje de 9 cap铆tulos que disfrute lentamente y aunque tengo mucho tiempo que no escribo una rese帽a en esta mi comunidad favorita, considero que es el momento id贸neo para hablarles de este nuevo show de Netflix que sin duda alguna deber铆a convertirse en una serie de culto como muchas otras. Pero no les adelantare mucho, mejor conozcamos juntos, esta nueva apuesta de la plataforma que para bien o para mal es la m谩s exitosa.

Squid Game is a series released on September 17, 2021 which was directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk who also wrote the screenplays. It stars Yuuki Luna (Ji-Yeong), Lee Jung-jae (Seong Gi-hun), John D. Michaels (VIP 1), Hae-soo Park (Sang-woo), Geoffrey Giuliano (Vip 4), Wi Ha-joon (Joon-ho) and Daniel C. Kennedy (VIP 2).

Squid Game o El Juego del Calamar es una serie estrenada el 17 de Septiembre de 2021 la cual fue dirigida por Hwang Dong-hyuk quien tambi茅n escribi贸 los guiones. Fue protagonizada por Yuuki Luna (Ji-Yeong), Lee Jung-jae (Seong Gi-hun), John D. Michaels (VIP 1), Hae-soo Park (Sang-woo), Geoffrey Giuliano (Vip 4), Wi Ha-joon (Joon-ho) y Daniel C. Kennedy (VIP 2)

The series begins by showing 2 of the main protagonists playing a game that will seemingly be important during the course of the series. Then the story shifts to the present day where the inconsiderate Gi-hun(Lee Jung-jae) who is a real mess, meets a strange man dressed in a black suit (Gong Yoo) at the subway station, who without knowing him offers him money in exchange for playing a strange challenge that consists of flipping an envelope. Gi-hun loses more times than he wins, but the only thing he has to endure when he loses is a slap in the face, but when he wins he gets 10,000 won for each victory. As expected our protagonist gets slapped a lot, but he gets a good amount of money and a pretty puffy face. But the man in the suit knows a lot more than we all think about Gi-hun and offers him more money in exchange for joining a strange game he represents.
At first he refuses, but when he is chased almost to death by a thug he owes a lot of money to and his mother tells him that he is about to lose his daughter who is moving to America with her mother and that the only way to prevent that from happening is to prove that he can pay her child support, he decides to call the number on the card that strange man in the black suit gave him. After all, he had signed a release where he lost all rights over his body, so without fear of anything he got into a van at the right time and place and was instantly knocked unconscious when he inhaled a gas that sent him to sleep immediately.
Then when he manages to wake up he finds himself surrounded by 455 other people, who like him, are dressed in green suits that reminded me of the school's physical education uniforms; each of the participants has an assigned number. Gi-hun who is number 456 meets an old man whom he instantly befriends, Oh Il-nam (Oh Young-soo) who is number 001.
Other participants include Kang Sae-byeok (Jung Ho-yeon) number 067, a North Korean immigrant who is a purse snatcher to support her young brother; an old neighborhood friend Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) number 218, who was once a successful investment banker and has now fallen from grace. Everyone who plays the game has some kind of unpayable debt or lost the rights to their bodies, so they decide to participate even at the latent risk of death. This is how we meet a set of characters who are guarded by masked guys dressed in red which reminded me of the House of Paper, but the only similarity I found between these 2 series is that all these people were discarded by society. Will they be able to escape alive and make their dreams come true?

La serie comienza mostrando a 2 de los protagonistas principales jugando un juego que al parecer ser谩 importante durante el transcurso de la serie. Luego la historia se traslada hasta la actualidad donde el desconsiderado Gi-hun(Lee Jung-jae) quien es un aut茅ntico desastre, conoce a un extra帽o hombre vestido con un traje negro (Gong Yoo) en la estaci贸n del metro, el cual sin conocerlo le ofrece dinero a cambio de jugar un extra帽o reto que consiste en voltear un sobre. Gi-hun pierde m谩s veces de las que gana, pero lo 煤nico que tiene que soportar cuando pierde es recibir una cachetada, pero cuando gana recibe 10.000 wones por cada victoria. Como era de esperar nuestro protagonista recibe muchas bofetadas, pero se lleva una buena cantidad de dinero y una cara bastante hinchada. Pero el hombre del traje sabe mucho m谩s de lo que todos creemos sobre Gi-hun y le ofrece m谩s dinero a cambio de unirse a un extra帽o juego al cual 茅l representa.
En un principio se niega, pero cuando es perseguido hasta casi morir por un mat贸n al que le debe mucho dinero y su madre le dice que est谩 a punto de perder a su hija quien se mudar谩 a Estados Unidos con su mama y que la 煤nica forma de evitar que eso pase es demostrar que puede pagar su manutenci贸n, decide llamar al n煤mero de la tarjeta que aquel extra帽o hombre de traje negro le dio. Despu茅s de todo hab铆a firmado un permiso donde perd铆a todos los derechos sobre su cuerpo as铆 que sin miedo a nada se subi贸 a una furgoneta a la hora y lugar indicado quedando inconsciente al instante al inhalar un gas que lo manda a dormir de inmediato.
Entonces cuando logra despertar se encuentra rodeado de otras 455 personas, que al igual que 茅l, est谩n vestidas con trajes verdes que me hicieron recordar a los uniformes de educaci贸n f铆sica del colegio; cada uno de los participantes tiene un n煤mero asignado. Gi-hun quien es el n煤mero 456 se encuentra con un anciano del cual se hace amigo al instante, Oh Il-nam (Oh Young-soo) el cual es el n煤mero 001.
Otros de los participantes son Kang Sae-byeok (Jung Ho-yeon) la n煤mero 067, una inmigrante norcoreana que se dedica a robar carteras para mantener a su joven hermano; un viejo amigo del barrio Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) el n煤mero 218, que en su d铆a fue un exitoso banquero de inversiones y que ahora ha ca铆do en desgracia. Todos los que juegan tienen alg煤n tipo de deuda impagable o perdieron los derechos sobre sus cuerpos, as铆 que deciden participar incluso bajo el riesgo latente de la muerte. Es as铆 como conocemos a un conjunto de personajes que son custodiados por tipos enmascarados vestidos de rojo los cuales me recordaron a la Casa de Papel, pero la 煤nica similitud que encontr茅 entre estas 2 series es que todas estas personas fueron desechadas por la sociedad. 驴Podr谩n escapar con vida y hacer sus sue帽os realidad?

It makes a difference when Netflix gives new showrunners the opportunity to showcase their work and become favorites of the masses. The first season of Squid Game consists of only 9 episodes that as we are used to from the streaming platform are aired all at once. And the story is enough to hook you from minute 1 because it's tight, it doesn't have any filler like other stories.
Everything seems to be so evil but that's what draws you in, a masked leader with the best mask I've ever seen in my life as he walks across a floor where photos of the contestants are erased as they are eliminated is more than I could have imagined I would get at first.
The first episode takes a little while to get its plot started but gives us a nod that it will have something to do with childhood. But it gets to the heart of the matter relatively quickly, especially compared to other k dramas I've seen on netflix that take several episodes to develop a plot. As we get to know the players surrounding Gi-hun, we get to know why and how the characters got to that point of not caring about losing their lives. But in this kind of series, you can hardly get attached to anyone because you know that they should all be eliminated in the end.

Se nota la diferencia cuando Netflix le da la oportunidad a nuevos showrunner de mostrar su trabajo y convertirse en favorito de las masas. La primera temporada de Squid Game consta de s贸lo 9 episodios que como ya nos tiene acostumbrados la plataforma de streaming se emiten todos de una sola vez. Y la historia es suficiente para engancharte desde el minuto 1 porque es ajustada, no tiene nada de relleno como otras historias
Todo parece ser tan maligno pero eso es lo que atrae, un l铆der enmascarado con la mejor mascara que he visto en mi vida mientras camina por un suelo donde las fotos de los participantes se van borrando a medida que son eliminados es m谩s de lo que pod铆a imaginar que obtendr铆a en un principio.
El primer episodio tarda un poco en comenzar su argumento pero nos da un gui帽o de que tendr谩 algo que ver la infancia. Pero llega al meollo de la cuesti贸n con relativa rapidez, sobre todo en comparaci贸n con otros k dramas que he visto en netflix que tardan varios episodios en desarrollar un argumento. A medida que vayamos conociendo a los jugadores que rodean a Gi-hun, vamos conociendo el porqu茅 y el c贸mo los personajes llegaron hasta ese punto de no importarles perder sus vidas. Pero en este tipo de series, dif铆cilmente puedes encari帽arte con alguien porque sabes que al final todos deber铆an ser eliminados.
That's the main ingredient of Squid Games who stays and who goes, how nerve-wracking each game is and the stakes involved. That excitement made me feel like I was in the game at times and it's perhaps a wonderful feeling the director achieves. It is interesting how as the series progresses we discover how far human misery can go and how weak our moral conceptions are when we are in danger and want to survive.
The North Korean girl who has escaped from her country with her brother, the Indian boy who arrives in South Korea in search of a dream and is exploited instead, the successful man who ends up being chased by the police, the gang member they want to kill. In short a lot of stories without taboos that seemed to me more current than ever and surprised me in a big way for being a South Korean production that in my opinion is a very conservative country regarding everything.
Speaking of which the actors were wonderful, every story, every costume, the leader's mask, the sets, the vip's which I'm sure actually exist, the sets, the filming sets. It's all a perfect combination of the content we deserve and I'm still betting on.
Although the ending of the story feels forced something that for me was not necessary to do to conceive a second season, many stories are closed but I would have preferred the protagonist to continue with his life. I already imagined that something strange would happen since everything was resolved so fast that it was impossible that something did not fail, however I prefer that you live the experience without spoilers of any kind what I will do is give a 9/10 to this great Asian production.
脡se es el ingrediente principal de los Juegos del Calamar qui茅n permanece y qui茅n se va, lo angustiante que resulta cada juego y los riesgos que conlleva. Esa emoci贸n hizo que por momentos yo me sintiera dentro del juego y es quiz谩s una sensaci贸n maravillosa que logra el director. Es interesante como a medida que avanza la serie vamos descubriendo hasta qu茅 punto puede llegar la miseria humana y lo d茅biles que son nuestras concepciones morales cuando estamos en peligro y queremos sobrevivir.
La chica norcoreana que ha escapado de su pa铆s con su hermano, el chico indio que llega a Corea del Sur en busca de un sue帽o y que en cambio es explotado, el hombre exitoso que termina siendo perseguido por la polic铆a, el miembro de una pandilla al que quieren asesinar. En fin un mont贸n de historias sin tab煤es que me parecieron m谩s actuales que nunca y me sorprendieron en gran manera por ser una producci贸n surcoreana que a mi parecer es un pa铆s muy conservador con respecto a todo.
Hablando de eso los actores fueron maravillosos, cada historia, cada traje, la m谩scara del l铆der, los juegos, los vip鈥檚 los cuales estoy seguro que existen en realidad, los escenarios, los sets de grabaci贸n. Todo es una combinaci贸n perfecta del contenido que nos merecemos y por el cual sigo apostando.
Aunque el final de la historia se sienta forzado algo que para m铆 no era necesario hacer para concebir una segunda temporada, muchas historias son cerradas pero hubiera preferido que el protagonista siguiera con su vida. Ya imaginaba que algo extra帽o suceder铆a ya que todo se resolv铆a tan r谩pido que era imposible que algo no fallara, sin embargo prefiero que vivan la experiencia sin spoilers de ning煤n tipo lo que si voy a hacer es darle un 9/10 a esta gran producci贸n asi谩tica.
