Hello my dear people of Hive, today I am happy to be around again, this time to introduce you to a series that gave me a lot of life in 2020 and I had been leaving for a special moment as many reviews are yet to be done.

Before watching this series I don't remember seeing anything made in Australia on TV, I guess Kylie Minogue videos don't count, except for a series I saw this year called Glitch which is a regular product that didn't pretend to be much. The truth is that it came at a time in my life when I needed it, that's why I love TV shows based on the anecdotes of their creators and this is one of them.

This year I was lucky enough to see Special a similar series but never at the level of this Australian jewel and if something I consider when giving a good review is the connection I manage to have with a character, with Josh I could feel identified from the beginning.

The story of the protagonist and a bunch of truly unforgettable characters is the perfect formula at least for me. This is undoubtedly one of those series that I would watch again and again and recommend watching at different stages of your life because it has a little bit of everything, but I won't say more and let's discover this unforgettable piece.

Please Like Me has become with its stories and situations one of the most endearing, honest and devastating series of recent times. And it does so without trying to be moralistic or soften situations that are already painful enough.

When it premiered, Please Like Me didn't exactly seem to be a comedy. But it ends up becoming just that in a half-hour comedy about mental illnesses like anxiety, depression and bipolar that from the first episode was defined with situations like the protagonist's coming out as gay and his mother's suicide attempt.

It was 2013 when Please Like Me saw the light, there were many things against the series for example the channel that aired it from the beginning ABC banished the series in its second least watched channel and in a mediocre time slot. Many, including Josh Thomas, suggested that such a move was turning the series and Queer content into some sort of weird, banal thing not suitable for all audiences. But a primetime slot was not necessary for the series to achieve international success and reach, being received with great acclaim by critics worldwide.

This endearing work addressed all kinds of issues that other shows with larger budgets and scope never thought to cover, and has treated them with sensitivity, subtlety, realism and humor not degrading rather humor serves in the story to nuance moments and not make them so hard.

The Series also dealt with topics that were taboo at the time such as homophobia, racism, depression, workplace bullying, breast cancer and sexually transmitted diseases. There was even an abortion that was far from being softened to justify an action that should be part of a woman's decisions, but was explained very frankly and without remorse.

Please Like Me no parec铆a ser una comedia precisamente.

Story

45.png

Please Like Me begins with a suicide attempt; its final episodes end with its consummation. All of this makes the entire length of Please Like Me feel to me like a plausible and unsentimental depiction of the consequences of suicide on human beings.

The parts that hurt the most within the show come from the suicide in the first few episodes Ginger Josh's mom's best friend commits suicide and of course they don't gloss over it. Instead they go on a field trip where they dedicate the entire episode to facing the pain and their fears, this episode is sublime and touching. Over the course of just over 20 minutes mother and son confront each other for the first time in the face of suicidal attitudes "I don't understand how you've never been mad at me, " says Rose after a fit of frankness over Ginger's death, "I'm very upset with Ginger " Josh takes his time and manages to respond "The third time you tried to kill yourself, there was a moment when we didn't know if we'd made it in time. If we had arrived in time, the doctors assured me you'd be fine. But if not, you were going to die slowly, you were going to be in agony for two weeks. But instead he doesn't watch her die for two weeks but for three painful years but nothing would have changed her mother's mind.

The last season is absurdly sad, because of its realism but it ends up being like life itself with its gray days and colorful days, just for that alone it is worth being alive and it manages to convey that message.

Si hab铆amos llegado a tiempo, los m茅dicos me aseguraron que estar铆as bien.

There is no sad soundtrack to accompany the moments of sadness there is just a normal day and everyone goes on with their lives around you as if nothing had happened. And that's reality, the world doesn't stop because your mom committed suicide or your dog died. But what there is is the best intro I have ever heard in my life and the best thing is that in every episode there is a new version of the same intro with new images that sometimes include our main characters dancing.

There was a lot of gay sex throughout the series and it didn't look superficial rather too realistic, victimless but with subtlety. There was Grindr, one night stands and a lot of metal disorders so many I didn't know about, mental health is the most important theme within the series so I think it is this one especially made for these times and of course I would recommend it.

But nothing was going to prepare me for the end of a show whose finale dragged on for more than a month, I'm not the type of person who has to watch a series in a day, I like to give myself time to finish and enjoy every moment that passes. Every character in the story is endearing, Josh Thomas is simply a genius and I'm hoping that someday he decides to do something better or just as endearing. Finally I can only tell you that Please Like Me is one of the most beautiful products you can find on Netflix, made with very little budget but with a lot of love, comedy and realism that make it irresistible at least for me. I awarded it a 10/10 and I think without fear of being wrong that I will fall short can't rate the art.
