Season 2 was released and I became a bit more interested in the show but I am not sure why I didn't give the show a watch after season 2 was released, maybe I was more interested in other productions. However, some time ago, I saw there was a third Kingdom production in the form of a special episode called "Ashin of the North". It was when I saw this that I definitely decided to give Kingdom a well-deserved watch.
I didn't know much about this series, the only thing I knew is that it was about a zombie apocalypse in a medieval kingdom and nothing more. That premise alone seemed very interesting to me because I have never seen zombies during that historical era, only in modern societies. Besides, as I have mentioned in the past, Koreans really love to produce zombie stories so I was a bit hyped about this one.
What was the movie about?
This special episode serves as a prequel to the series and explores events taking place in the northern part of the country many years before the events of season 1. At the end of season 2, a new character is revealed in the last scene and this special episode tells the story of this person.
The main character is Ashin, a low-class girl belonging to a group of people called Jurchen, but living inside the kingdom of Joseon. Her status could be similar to gypsies in the West, meaning foreign people that live in a place where they don't have any historic ties. The kingdom and the Jurchen tribes living outside of it don't get along very well, so the Jurchen people living inside the kingdom are kind of trapped between all of this tension. None of the 2 major groups completely trusts them and they are seen as disposable and non-important, although they don't realize this.
It wasn't an easy situation for Ashin, her family, and her community. They were simply trying to make ends meet while being completely peaceful and hardworking. Despite how conservatives they were, Ashin was very adventurous, she enjoyed going alone in the woods and spending a lot of time exploring it. She knew about a magical resurrection plant, and since she had a sick mother, one of her goals was to help her with this plant.
La temporada 2 fue lanzada y me interesé un poco más en el show, pero no estoy seguro de por qué no le di un vistazo después del lanzamiento de la temporada 2, tal vez estaba más interesado en otras producciones. Sin embargo, hace algún tiempo, vi que había una tercera producción de Kingdom en forma de un episodio especial llamado "Ashin of the North". ¿De qué trataba la película?
Este episodio especial sirve como una precuela de la serie y explora los eventos que tienen lugar en la parte norte del país muchos años antes de los eventos de la temporada 1. Al final de la temporada 2, se revela un nuevo personaje en la última escena y este episodio especial cuenta la historia de esta persona.
El personaje principal es Ashin, una chica de clase baja que pertenece a un grupo de personas llamado Jurchen, pero que vive dentro del reino de Joseon. Su estatus podría ser similar al de los gitanos en Occidente, es decir, personas extranjeras que viven en un lugar donde no tienen ningún vínculo histórico. Without any of the political betrayals and tragedies, there wouldn't be a zombie apocalypse because the main events that trigger all of the bad things are always related to politics and decisions from the government. As mentioned before, Ashin and her people were living in very vulnerable socioeconomic circumstances, they were living inside a kingdom that didn't really care much about them, so maybe it was a matter of time for bad things to happen.
The episode begins with her as an innocent girl and ends with her as a grown-up woman with deep grudges and the resources to act on them. Throughout the episode, we will see a cool zombie tiger and a massacre as harsh as the ones that can be found in the main series.
There is a lot of drama involving Ashin and ultimately, there will be a lot of violence. And this violence is only just beginning because it will probably continue with the release of Kingdom season 3.
Season 2 showed an example of how zombies could be weaponized, but what Ashin does and plans to continue doing is much more ambitious. It will be entertaining to see how the Prince and his people deal with this new powerful villain.
Main names associated with the film
This special episode was directed by the main director of the series, Seong-hun Kim. His previous productions are several films called Tunnel, How the Lack of Love Affects Two Men, and A Hard Day. In total, he only has 4 productions so far and Kingdom is the most important by far.

When it comes to the cast, the only relevant member is the actress playing the main character, Jun Ji-hyun. She plays Ashin, a woman with a lot of reasons to hold grudges against many people. Some of the previous productions where this actress has worked are Legend of the Blue Sea, My Love from Another Star, and The Berlin File.
How were the performance from the cast and the scenery?
I liked the performance from pretty much everyone. Even the young version of Ashin played by the actress Si-ah Kim was awesome. There were a lot of dramatic moments, which are always the most challenging for actors and actresses, and the cast members were great all the time.
The scenery was awesome as usual. I especially liked some scenes that took place in a forest, and towards the end, the use of lighting made things seem more mysterious.
Final thoughts
This special episode is on par, and perhaps it is even better than some parts of the original show. There are no cartoonish characters whatsoever, which was one of the things I didn't like about the original series, and the story provides sufficient background information to allow the viewers to understand the reasons that make this new villain act this way.
It also has a faster pace which is understandable and I think I preferred it this way. There is less time wasted and more direct-to-the-point approaches in the plot. All in all, this was an excellent addition to the Kingdom series and a great introduction of a terrific villain.

No hay personajes cariaturescos en absoluto, que fue una de las cosas que no me gustó de la serie original, y la historia proporciona suficiente información de fondo para permitir que los espectadores comprendan las razones que hacen que este nuevo villano actúe de esta manera.
También tiene un ritmo más rápido que es comprensible y creo que lo preferí así. Hay menos tiempo perdido y enfoques más directos en la trama. Con todo, esta fue una excelente adición a la serie Kingdom y una gran presentación de un villano excelente.
