Movies about frauds, scams, and all sorts of skulduggery can be very enjoyable, and the type of story this film was exploring was completely new to me because I don't think I have ever watched a film showing examples of how this type of fraud can be made in the health industry in America.
The only recent movie I could think of that is somehow similar because it also shows a type of fraud being made in today's society is called I Care a Lot, a great film where Rosamund Pike plays an evil, unscrupulous and cunning woman that loves to commit fraud against old people.
In Body Brokers the story is basically about junkies figuring out how to milk the insurance industry by abusing the rehab costs as much as they can.
What was the movie about?
The story begins with 2 junkies, Utah and Opal trying to survive by committing robberies. Every day they are at the risk of ending up dead by an overdose or by just getting shot. Their addiction keeps them trapped in this hell on earth and they seem to find no way out of this problem.
One day and by random chance, they meet a person called Wood who quickly offers to buy them some food, and this person introduces them to the idea of going to a rehabilitation facility, to try and get rid of their addictions and start over.
The woman, Opal, doesn't seem convinced by this offer but the man is intrigued by it and realizes this could finally be their way out of their destructive lifestyle. Eventually, the man, Utah, decides this is worth trying and will make the necessary arrangements to attend one of these facilities with the goal of changing his life.
The type of fraud this movie explores doesn't necessarily affect the junkies directly, it affects them indirectly because they believe everything is set up to help them when in reality the goal is to milk the insurance industry. The junkies do receive help, and as the movie eventually shows, they sometimes even receive a cut of the profits for simply attending one of the rehab facilities.
Las películas sobre fraudes, estafas y todo tipo de engaños pueden ser muy agradables, y el tipo de historia que exploraba esta película era completamente nuevo para mí porque no creo haber visto nunca una película que muestre ejemplos de cómo este tipo de fraude se puede hacer en la industria de la salud en Estados Unidos.
La única película reciente que se me ocurre que es de alguna manera similar porque también muestra un tipo de fraude que se está cometiendo en la sociedad actual se llama I Care a Lot, una gran película en la que Rosamund Pike interpreta a una mujer malvada, sin escrúpulos y astuta a la que le encanta cometer fraudes contra las personas mayores.
En Body Brokers, la historia trata básicamente de adictos que descubren cómo explotar la industria de seguros abusando de los costos de rehabilitación tanto como pueden.
¿De qué trataba la película?
La historia comienza con 2 adictos, Utah y Opal, que intentan sobrevivir cometiendo robos. Todos los días corren el riesgo de morir por una sobredosis o simplemente por recibir un disparo. Su adicción los mantiene atrapados en este infierno en la tierra y parece que no encuentran salida a este problema.
Un día y por casualidad, conocen a una persona llamada Wood que rápidamente se ofrece a comprarles algo de comida, y esta persona les presenta la idea de ir a un centro de rehabilitación para intentar deshacerse de sus adicciones y empezar de nuevo.
La mujer, Opal, no parece convencida por esta oferta, pero el hombre está intrigado por ella y se da cuenta de que esta podría finalmente ser la salida de su destructivo estilo de vida. The fraud expands by making junkies convince other junkies to attend these facilities and this way they keep the number of available beds filled and the bills and profits increase as a result. If the junkie gets out of the rehab facility and then comes back, even better since this means more money for the body brokers.
In order to convince some junkies to attend the rehab facility, they can receive a small cut of the profits of this whole fraud, so they can end up receiving not only the care of the facility but also some money for their own expenses. The film explains at the beginning that the ACA made this fraud possible, and the amount of money involved in this was incredibly high, in the order of billions and billions.
We will learn more about this fraud as Wood begins to introduce Utah into this business and as Utah begins to become better at it. Being a body broker is extremely profitable as this film shows and there are even some doctors gladly participating in these frauds.
The film has what can be considered an anti-climactic ending, but I guess they decided to end it like that to kind of shock the viewer and to leave the classical message that drugs are destructive and so on. There is also a very exaggerated moment when a major crime is committed and this can of damaged the film a little bit because that scene didn't make much sense and a character who was always very strategic and well-planned suddenly became explosive and uncontrollable for a little while.
As a whole, the film is enjoyable and if you liked the one I mentioned at the beginning called I Care a Lot, you will probably enjoy this one as well.
Main names associated with the film
This film doesn't have big names with the exception of the actor Michael Kenneth Williams. This was one of my doubts when considering watching this film but the truth is, not every great films need big names working on it.
The director and writer of this movie is John Swab. This person has first-hand experience in this body brokers industry due to his troubled past, and that's why he decided to make this film to allow other people to get informed about it. He doesn't have too much experience working in the entertainment industry but there are a few other films where he has worked as a director and writer as well such as Run with the Hunted, Let Me Make You a Martyr, and Ida Red.

His mentor in all of this will be the aforementioned actor Michael Kenneth Williams. This actor is known for working in so many productions, a few examples would be Assassin's Moussa, Boardwalk Empire, Lovecraft Country, and many others.
Frank Grillo plays a secondary character but is quite important in the fraud. He will be the owner of one facility offering help to addicts but he only wishes to milk the insurance payments. Some of the previous films where this actor has participated are The Grey, The Purge: Anarchy, the series Billions among others.
How were the performance from the cast and the quality of the writing?
The cast had a regular performance. The main actor could have done a better job but this didn't prevent me from enjoying the film as a whole. The best performance came from Michael Kenneth Williams and Frank Grillo.
The writing was interesting mainly because it shows information about this unique fraud, but I also felt the story could have been more entertaining and less exaggerated. However, I do believe the writing was acceptable and overall it was a good job.
Final thoughts
Body Brokers informs the viewer about a very unique type of fraud that takes advantage of certain regulations and lack of overseeing in America due to their obsession with solving the drug problems that affect many people. In an attempt of providing a solution, what they did was just to create an open arena for fraudsters to do anything they wanted.
It was enjoyable for me to learn about this and people who like this type of movie will certainly find it enjoyable as well. This is a crime-drama story and if nothing has changed then similar cases are surely still happening all over the country.

El elenco tuvo una actuación regular. El actor principal podría haber hecho un mejor trabajo, pero esto no me impidió disfrutar de la película en su conjunto. La mejor actuación vino de Michael Kenneth Williams y Frank Grillo.
La escritura fue interesante principalmente porque muestra información sobre este fraude único, pero también sentí que la historia podría haber sido más entretenida y menos exagerada. Sin embargo, creo que la redacción fue aceptable y, en general, fue un buen trabajo.
Reflexiones finales
Body Brokers informa al espectador sobre un tipo de fraude muy singular que se aprovecha de ciertas regulaciones y la falta de supervisión en Estados Unidos debido a su obsesión por resolver los problemas de drogas que afectan a muchas personas. En un intento de proporcionar una solución, lo que hicieron fue simplemente crear un espacio abierto para que los estafadores hicieran lo que quisieran.
Fue interesante para mí aprender sobre esto y las personas a las que les gusta este tipo de películas sin duda también lo encontrarán disfrutable. Esta es una historia de drama criminal y si nada ha cambiado, seguramente todavía se están produciendo casos similares en todo el país.
