Despite being quite satisfied with those who were awarded, before turning the page and closing this chapter, I would like to talk about those films that were nominated and that I couldn't review before the delivery

Los Oscars se repartieron, tenemos los ganadores, los récords y los nominados que no lograron llevarse la estatuilla a casa. A pesar de estar bastante conforme con quienes resultaron premiados, antes de pasar página y cerrar este capítulo, quisiera hablar de esas películas que estuvieron nominadas y que no pude reseñar antes de la entrega.

Among those films, one of the last I saw was precisely Pieces of a woman, a Canadian film directed by Kornél Mundruczó and starring Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf. The film tells the story of Martha (Kirby) and Sean (LeBeouf), a Boston couple, whose life changes radically after a tragic incident. From the beginning of the film we can see the anticipation around the imminent birth of her first daughter: Martha has a very advanced pregnancy, we see the preparations, the baby shower, ultrasounds, the room of the baby that must be born at any time, as indeed happens and we see Kirby interpret a difficult childbirth in an outstanding way.

De entre esas películas, una de las últimas que vi fue precisamente Pieces of a woman (Fragmentos de una mujer), una película canadiense dirigida por Kornél Mundruczó y protagonizada por Vanessa Kirby y Shia LaBeouf. La cinta cuenta la historia de Martha (Kirby) y Sean (LeBeouf), una pareja de Boston, cuya vida cambia radicalmente tras un incidente trágico. Desde que inicia la película podemos ver la expectación alrededor del inminente nacimiento de su primera hija: Martha luce un embarazo adelantadísimo, vemos los preparativos, el baby shower, ecografias, la habitación de la bebé que debe nacer en cualquier momento, como en efecto ocurre y vemos a Kirby interpretar un parto difícil de una manera sobresaliente.

The camera sequence from the beginning of the film to the birthing scene is a gem of cinematography. I really liked the camera movement, the shots, the angles, that feeling that it provokes in the viewer who thinks he's inside that house, next to that woman and becomes even more involved in the situation. And Vanessa Kirby's performance, throughout the movie, but especially during that first half hour is superb, perfect I would say. Her contractions, nausea, dizziness, tears, screams, they look real, she doesn't seem to be acting at any time.

La secuencia de cámara desde el inicio de la película hasta la escena del parto es una joya de cinematografía. Me gustó muchísimo el movimiento de cámara, las tomas, los ángulos, esa sensación que provoca en el espectador que cree estar dentro de esa casa, junto a esa mujer y se involucra aún más en la situación. Y la actuación de Vanessa Kirby, en toda la película, pero en especial durante esa primera media hora es soberbia, perfecta diría yo. Sus contracciones, náuseas, mareos, lágrimas, gritos, se ven reales, no pareciera estar actuando en ningún momento.

Those who haven't seen any trailer for the film, who don't know exactly what it's about, skip this paragraph, spoiler alert (!) Because during the home birth (it was Martha's decision to give birth there and not in a hospital) , a climate of tension is generated, of concern on the part of the midwife, it seems that things are going to go wrong, that Martha and the baby are in danger and finally the baby, crying, is received in her mother's arms. But just when we think the scare is over, just a few minutes after holding her in her arms, the baby dies, leading to a story of great pain.

Aquellos que no hayan visto ningún trailer de la película, que no sepan eactamente de qué se trata, sáltense este párrafo, spoiler alert (!) porque durante el parto en casa (fue decisión de Martha dar a luz allí y no en un hospital), se genera un clima de tensión, de preocupación por parte de la partera, parece que las cosas van a salir mal, que Martha y el bebé están en peligro y finalmente la criatura, llorando, es recibida en los brazos de la madre. Pero justo cuando creemos que el susto ha terminado, apenas unos minutos después de haber sostenido a la niña en sus brazos,la bebé muere, dando entrada a una historia de muchísimo dolor.

The personal relationships present in the film are complex and there are a lot of emotions, a lot of drama, a lot of questioning. Although the rest of the film prolongs what happened during the first half hour, it does not do so with the same force and intensity, because the story changes, it becomes sadder, heavier, slower, which on the one hand can bore some and on the other, it emphasizes the vertigo and narrative rhythm of that majestic first half hour.

Las relaciones personales presentes en la película son complejas y hay muchas emociones, mucho drama, muchos cuestionamientos. Si bien el resto de la película prolonga lo sucedido durante la primera hora, no lo hace con la misma fuerza e intensidad, porque la historia cambia, se vuelve más triste, más pesada, más lenta, lo que por un lado puede aburrir a algunos y por el otro enfatiza el vértigo y el ritmo narrativo de esa majestuosa primera media hora.

If I could have given Vanessa Kirby an Oscar I would have. Her acting is the best of the movie and the role is quite demanding on a physical and emotional level. Pieces of a woman is a story that weighs, that hurts, that one wouldn't want to see again for what it tells, but to review what an anthology performance is, at the level of the greatest actresses .
