Continuing with the ambitious project of Marvel Studios to create an interconnected cinematic universe that began with Iron Man on April 30, 2008, on June 13 of the same year was released The Incredible Hulk, a film that would present a new side of Dr. Banner after the resounding failure that meant the 2003’s film. However, something very curious happens with this film; it practically went unnoticed both for the public and even for Marvel Studios, to the point that all the plot points and characters that we met in this film were completely forgotten, does that mean that The Incredible Hulk is a bad movie? The answer is perhaps a bit more complex than it seems.
So without any further ado, let's start!
The film was directed by Louis Letterier and stars Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, Liv Tayler as Betty Ross (the in turn romantic interest), William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross, Betty's dad (and the film’s real antagonist) and Tim Roth as the villain Emil Blonsky who eventually transforms into the Abomination.
The film starts off strong with a flashback recap of how Bruce Banner got the powers of the Hulk through gamma ray exposure, I think this is great because it saves the whole character’s introduction, it assumes the audience knows the character and gives enough context for those who don't, this allows the film to jump straight into the plot. Banner is a fugitive from American justice because Thaddeus Ross accuses him of hijacking vital war information (what Thaddeus is after is Banner and his ability to transform into the Hulk), and also for seriously injuring a number of scientists and military personnel at the time of the gamma ray incident. Our protagonist is living a "quiet" life in Brazil, working in a soft drink factory and trying to manage his anger in order to control the Hulk. At the same time he keeps in touch through encrypted e-mails with someone known as "Mr. Blue", who is fascinated by his condition and who also promises to help him get rid of his "curse".
One day in the soda factory Banner cuts his finger and a drop of his blood falls into one of the bottles without realizing it, this bottle reaches the hands of an ordinary consumer (which is nothing more and nothing less than Stan Lee) and when drinking the contents dies from exposure to gamma energy, General Ross learns of this and upon learning that the bottle came from Brazil he decides to contact the special operations expert Emil Blonsky to go find Banner in Rocinha, the largest Favela in Brazil and where the factory where our beloved doctor works is located. Once there, they find Banner and then begins a chasing that ends at the soda factory, where stimulated by the rage, transforms into the Hulk and very easily eliminates the special operations forces and then flees the place.
Next day Banner dawns in Panama and begins to wander until he somehow reaches the United States to reunite with the love of his life, Betty Ross and to meet in person the "Mr. Blue" in whom he has faith that both can help him to get rid of the Hulk forever. On the other hand, Emil Blonsky, overwhelmed by the power of the Hulk, decides to undergo a series of experiments in hopes of matching his strength to that of the green giant.
If there's one thing I have to say about this movie, it's that it's aged really badly. I remember watching it a couple of times a few years ago and the truth is that I didn't remember it being so... Boring, in fact, I was one of those who defended this movie as a main pillar in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but after a few years I can understand those who never enjoyed it. Undoubtedly the best part of the movie is Edward Norton, who plays the spectacular role of a Bruce Banner seriously disturbed by his gamma rays accident and who wants to get rid of his ability to transform into the Hulk at all costs so he can live a peaceful life with his beloved Betty.
However, that doesn't quits The Incredible Hulk from feeling slow and boring a lot of the time, or rather; like just another run-of-the-mill movie. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to say that Marvel movies are scripted wonders or that they are misunderstood works of art, I pretty understand that they are just a product meant to entertain for a couple of hours, but I feel that this movie fails even at that, and while maybe it doesn't fails in a resounding way, the fact is that it does and it feels like a clearly inferior product to its Iron Man predecessor. On the visual side of things the film doesn't perform the best either, I think the CGI leaves to be desired even for the time, I mean, Iron Man, a film that came out earlier and with a much smaller budget looked much better.
Remember that in my Iron Man review I talked about something I call "Marvel's Evil? Well, this movie is the perfect example of that. Our villain of choice, Emil Blonsky, leaves a lot to be desired as an antagonist, he's just a bad guy who wants power and... That's it. I mean, compared to Banner's inner conflict speech with the Hulk (which is very well executed) this feels like a cop-out only because every superhero movie has to have a supervillain, period. Which I think is a shame to be honest, I see the Abomination as a missed opportunity to make a memorable villain on par with the Hulk himself in terms of power.
Another thing that made it a bit jarring for me a couple of times is that a lot of the time I felt like I was watching a romantic drama instead of a superhero movie, I think a lot of screen time was given to the Banner-Betty relationship which honestly wasn't very interesting. The action scenes and the final showdown are ok, but they're a bit overshadowed by everything I mentioned above.
As a curious fact, Edward Norton did not continue in the role of Bruce Banner because it was going to be too complicated to deal on the set with his character and Robert Downey Jr, so due to the overwhelming success that Iron Man had in relation to The Incredible Hulk they decided to replace Edward Norton with Mark Ruffalo in the next appearance of Hulk in The Avengers.
After watching this movie again it's easy to understand why Marvel practically assumes it doesn't exist. It can be said that like Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk is an experimental film, in this case they tried to give a much more serious approach to the whole plot, and while the film is not bad, it's not good either, it feels slow and easily forgettable, so much so that to this day (correct me if I'm wrong) characters like Betty Ross, the Abomination, Samuel Sterns (who we are given to understand that he was going to become The Leader) do not appear or are not mentioned anymore, as if they were not even mentioned anymore, as if they never existed, and I think that if it wasn't for the post-credits scene where Tony Stark appears talking to Thaddeus Ross about forming a "team", this movie wouldn't be an official part of the Marvel chronology.

Continuando con el ambicioso proyecto de Marvel Studios de crear un universo cinematográfico interconectado y que dio inicio con Iron Man el 30 de abril del 2008, el 13 de junio del mismo año fue estrenada The Incredible Hulk, película que nos presentaría una nueva faceta del Dr. Banner después del estrepitoso fracaso que significó la película del 2003. Sin embargo, con esta película pasa algo muy curioso, y es que prácticamente pasó desapercibida tanto como para el público como incluso para Marvel Studios, al punto de que todos los puntos argumentales y personajes que conocimos en esta cinta fueron completamente olvidados, ¿eso quiere decir que The Incredible Hulk es una mala película? La respuesta quizás es un poco más compleja de lo que parece.
Así que sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos!
La película fue dirigida por Louis Letterier y protagonizada por Edward Norton en el papel de Bruce Banner, Liv Tayler en el papel de Betty Ross (el interés romántico de turno), William Hurt como Thaddeus Ross el papá de Betty (y el real antagonista del film) y Tim Roth en el papel del villano Emil Blonsky que posteriormente se transforma en la Abominación.
La película comienza fuerte con una recapitulación en forma de flashbacks de como Bruce Banner obtuvo los poderes de Hulk a través de la exposición de rayos gamma, esto me parece genial porque se ahorra toda la introducción del personaje, asume que el público conoce al personaje y da el contexto suficiente para quienes no lo conozcan, esto le permite saltar directamente a la trama de la película.
Banner es un prófugo de la justicia americana debido a que Thaddeus Ross le acusa de secuestrar información bélica de vital importancia (lo que Thaddeus persigue es a Banner y su habilidad de convertirse en Hulk), y también por herir de gravedad a una cantidad importante de científicos y personal militar en el momento en el que ocurrió el incidente con los rayos gamma. Nuestro protagonista se encuentra viviendo una vida “tranquila” en Brasil, trabajando en una fábrica de bebidas gaseosas y tratando de manejar su ira para poder controlar a Hulk. Al mismo tiempo se mantiene en contacto a través de correos electrónicos encriptados con alguien conocido como “El señor azul”, quién se muestra fascinado por su condición y que promete ayudarle a deshacerse de su “maldición”.
Un día en la fábrica de gaseosas Banner se corta un dedo y una gota de su sangre cae en una de las botellas sin darse cuenta, esta botella llega a manos de un consumidor común y corriente (que es nada más y nada menos que Stan Lee) y al beber el contenido muere por exposición a la energía gamma, el general Ross se entera de esto y al enterarse que la botella venía de Brasil decide contactar con el experto en operaciones especiales Emil Blonsky ir a buscar a Banner en Rocinha, la Favela más grande de Brasil y donde se encuentra la fábrica donde trabaja nuestro querido doctor. Una vez allí encuentran a Banner y comienza una persecución que termina en la fábrica de gaseosas, donde estimulado por la rabia Bruce se convierte en Hulk y con mucha facilidad acaba con las fuerzas de operaciones especiales y luego huye del lugar.
Al día siguiente Banner amanece en Panamá y comienza a vagar hasta de alguna manera llegar a Estados Unidos para reencontrarse con el amor de su vida Betty Ross y conocer en persona al “señor azul” en quienes tiene la fe de que lo pueden ayudar a deshacerse de Hulk para siempre. Por otra parte, Emil Blonsky abrumado por el poder de Hulk, decide someterse a una serie de experimentos con la esperanza de equiparar su fuerza a la del gigante verde.
Si algo tengo que decir acerca de esta película, es que ha envejecido realmente mal. Recuerdo haberla visto un par de veces hace unos años y lo cierto es que no recordaba que fuese tan… Aburrida, de hecho, yo era de quienes defendían esta película como un pilar fundamental en el Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel, pero después de algunos años puedo entender a quienes nunca la pudieron disfrutar. Lo mejor de la película es sin duda Edward Norton, quién hace un papel espectacular de un Bruce Banner seriamente trastornado por su accidente con los rayos gamma y que quiere deshacerse a toda costa de su habilidad de transformarse en Hulk para poder vivir una vida pacifica con su amada Betty.
Sin embargo eso no salva que The Incredible Hulk se sienta lenta y aburrida muchas veces, o más bien; como una película más del montón. No me malinterpreten, no quiero decir que las películas de Marvel son una maravilla en cuanto a guion o que son obras de arte incomprendidas, entiendo muy bien que solo son un producto pensado para entretener durante un par de horas, pero siento que esta película falla incluso en eso, y aunque quizás no lo hace de manera estrepitosa, el hecho es que lo hace y se siente como un producto claramente inferior a su antecesora Iron Man. En el aspecto visual la película tampoco se desempeña de la mejor manera, creo que el CGI deja bastante que desear incluso para la época, es decir, Iron Man, una película que salió antes y con mucho menos presupuesto se veía mucho mejor.
¿Recuerdan que en la reseña de Iron Man hablé acerca de lo que yo llamo “El mal de Marvel? Bueno, esta película es la perfecta muestra de ello. Nuestro villano de turno, Emil Blonsky, deja muchísimo que desear como antagonista, solo es un tipo malo que quiere poder y… Eso es todo. Es decir, en comparación al discurso de conflicto interno de Banner con Hulk (que está muy bien ejecutado) esto se siente como una excusa porque toda película de superhéroes tiene que tener un supervillano y punto. Cosa que me parece una lástima siendo sincero, porque veo a Abominación como una oportunidad perdida de hacer un villano memorable a la altura del mismísimo Hulk en cuanto a poder.
Otra cosa que me hizo un poco de ruido un par de veces es que mucha veces sentía que estaba viendo un drama romántico en lugar de una película de superhéroes, creo que se le dio mucho tiempo de pantalla a la relación Banner-Betty que sinceramente no era muy interesante. Las escenas de acción y el enfrentamiento final no están mal, pero se ven un poco opacadas por todo lo que mencioné anteriormente.
Como dato curioso, Edward Norton no continuó en el papel de Bruce Banner porque iba a ser muy complicado lidiar en el set con su carácter y con el de Robert Downey Jr, por lo que debido al éxito abrumador que tuvo Iron Man en relación a The Incredible Hulk decidieron sustituir a Edward Norton por Mark Ruffalo en la siguiente aparición de Hulk en Los Vengadores.
Después de ver esta película de nuevo es sencillo entender porque Marvel prácticamente asume como si no existiera. Podemos decir que al igual que Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk es una película experimental, en este caso tratan de darle un enfoque mucho más serio a toda la trama, y si bien la película no es mala, tampoco es buena, se siente muy lenta y es fácilmente olvidable, tanto que hasta el día de hoy (corríjanme si me equivoco) personajes como Betty Ross, la Abominación, Samuel Sterns (quién nos dan a entender que se iba a convertir en El Líder) no aparecen ni son mencionados más, como si nunca hubiesen existido, y creo que de no ser por la escena post-créditos donde aparece Tony Stark hablándole a Thaddeus Ross acerca de que está formando un “equipo”, esta película no formaría parte oficial de la cronología de Marvel.
I think all the treatment that Bruce Banner-Hulk has received throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe is sad to say the least; from this movie that Marvel wants to forget, to the poor performance or protagonism of the Hulk in the later Avengers movies, and while I'm not a fan of the character I think he has much more to offer and I hope that someday they make a movie worthy of the green giant. Creo que todo el tratamiento que han recibido Bruce Banner-Hulk a lo largo del universo cinematográfico de Marvel es triste por decir poco; desde esta película que Marvel quiere olvidar, hasta el pobre desempeño o protagonismo de Hulk en las cintas posteriores de Los Vengadores, y si bien yo no soy un fanático del personaje considero que tiene mucho más que ofrecer y espero que algún día hagan una película digna del gigante verde. ¿Y tú? ¿Te gustó The Incredible Hulk? ¿Crees que tiene el reconocimiento que merece?
