La primera vez que fui a los andes venezolanos, hace tiempo ya, fue por motivo de trabajo, pero aproveché un día libre para conocer algunos lugares de los espectaculares páramos del estado Mérida, como la Laguna de Mucubají, uno de los sitios más visitados no sólo por su misteriosa belleza sino también porque está cerca de la ciudad.
I was staying at an inn in the center of the city of Mérida, it was Sunday, I got up early and went to Las Heroinas Square, they told me that in the tourist agencies there I could find several day trips.
Yo estaba hospedada en una posada por el centro de la ciudad de Mérida, era domingo, me levanté temprano y me fui hacia la Plaza de Las Heroínas, me dijeron que en las agencias turísticas que hay por allí podía encontrar varios paseos de un día.
I got one that left at 10:00 am and would take me to various iconic sites in the vicinity. We did the ride in long-chassis jeeps, since I was alone, they told me to sit next to the driver, which was great because I could see the road better and take some photos from the window.
Conseguí uno que salía a las 10:00 am y que me llevaría a varios sitios emblemáticos de los alrededores. El paseo lo hicimos en unos jeeps de chasis largo, como yo estaba sola, me dijeron que me sentara al lado del conductor, lo cual fue genial porque podía ver mejor el camino y hacer algunas fotos desde la ventana.
From the city of Mérida, the driver took the Tabay road, then when he reached Apartaderos he continued a few kilometers along the road to Santo Domingo and the Mucubají Lagoon appeared before us. There is an area to park there, at once we get out of the car and feel the low temperature.
Desde la ciudad de Mérida el conductor tomó la vía de Tabay, luego al llegar a Apartaderos siguió unos pocos kilómetros por el camino hacia Santo Domingo y apareció ante nosotros la Laguna de Mucubají. Allí hay un área para estacionar, de una vez nos bajamos del carro y sentimos la baja temperatura.
There was a lot of fog that day so the size of the lagoon was not very clear. As the tour guide explained, it is one of the largest in the state of Merida and its depth is approximately 15 meters.
Había mucha niebla ese día por lo que no se veía muy bien la dimensión de la laguna. Según nos explicó el guía del paseo, es una de las más grandes del estado Mérida y su profundidad es de aproximadamente 15 metros.
The Mucubají Lagoon, whose name is believed to mean "big water site" according to the indigenous people of this region, is within the Sierra Nevada National Park at an altitude of 3,550 meters above sea level.

There are many trout there, which although they are not originally from this place since they were brought from North America and Europe and introduced to the lagoon in 1937, they have become a great attraction for people when there is a fishing season between March and September.
Allí hay muchas truchas, que aunque no son originalmente de este lugar ya que fueron traídas de Norteamérica y Europa e introducidas a la laguna en 1937, se han convertido en una gran atracción para la gente cuando hay temporada de pesca entre marzo y septiembre.
In the surroundings of the Mucubají Lagoon there is a Visitor Center with a cafeteria and also near there you can buy handicrafts, scarves, gloves, etc.
En los alrededores de la Laguna de Mucubají hay un Centro de Visitantes con cafetín y también cerca de allí se pueden comprar artesanías, bufandas, guantes, etc.
After the short guided tour, everyone was able to go wherever they wanted, I took a short horse ride and approached the typical vegetation of the place: the frailejones (espeletia schultzii).

While I was photographing the lagoon in the mist, some cute and happy little birds appeared that moved in small jumps, so the dark atmosphere dissipated.

With the permission of the park ranger, you can camp at the Mucubají Lagoon and you can also do other short excursions, for example to the Los Patos Lagoon (2.4 km), Black Lagoon (3.4 km), and Victoria Lagoon (4.5 km). Also if you have more time you can climb the Pico Mucuñuque at 4,610 meters high, but of course with suitable clothing since temperatures can reach close to zero degrees.
Con permiso del guardaparque se puede acampar por la Laguna de Mucubají y también se pueden hacer otras excursiones cortas, por ejemplo a la Laguna de Los Patos (a 2,4 km), Laguna Negra (a 3,4 km) y Laguna Victoria (a 4,5 km). También si se tiene más tiempo se puede subir al Pico Mucuñuque a 4.610 metros de altura, eso sí, con ropa adecuada ya que las temperaturas pueden llegar cerca de los cero grados.
