Odesa guidebook: Must-see places #16 Voice of Odesa. First Interactive Sculpture in Ukraine

Have you never been to Odesa and only looked at it in photographs? But we all know that a photo does not convey sound. And today I will tell you about a wonderful sculpture that will allow you to plunge into the atmosphere of the city and recognize it with your own ears.

According to the authors, this is the first interactive sculpture in the country. Honestly, I tried to find something else similar and could not, so this is really true.

What is the Voice of Odesa?

The new sculptural composition was solemnly opened on Deribasovskaya Street, opposite the monument to Utesov. It is called "The Voice of Odesa" and is a bronze gramophone.

By pointing the phone at the QR code placed on the sculpture, you can hear the works of 13 famous Odesa authors: Utyosov, Zhvanetsky, Oistrakh, Nezhdanova, Gilels, Richter, Feltsman, Obodzinsky, Dolina, Stoyanov, Kartsev, Coralli and Vodyanoy, - and sounds that convey the Odesa flavor - announcements at the station, the anthem of Odesa, issued by the chimes at the City Council, the chime of the tram and much more.

The sides of the gramophone are made in the form of facades of Odesa houses with many details - here are the famous Odesa cats, a child playing the violin, a languid lady with cigarettes, a sailor, and a well.

Initially, it was planned to install the composition near the Mother-in-law Bridge, but the Odesa sculptor Mikhail Reva suggested a more successful location - in the City Garden. This place became ideal because the gramophone together with the monument to Leonid Utyosov formed a single, semantic composition - as if Utyosov was listening to a vinyl record.

What is the history of the sculpture?

The opening of the sculpture took place on October 16, 2020. The composition was created by sculptor Viktor Tiblevich. It took nine months to realize the idea in bronze.

The sculpture appeared in the city center on the initiative of Andrey Levchenko from Odesa. He admits that because of his work, he rarely visits his hometown, but this loves him no less.

“I remember Odesa not with my eyes, but with my ears. I remember the waves of the sea, the tram, and those people who sound like Odesa. After all, even those who have not seen Odesa know how it sounds thanks to Odesa musicians, satirists, and artists. This, in my opinion, is the first interactive sculpture in Ukraine. I donate this to the city so that there is something to listen to” - Levchenko said.

Andrey Levchenko also noted that the project will still develop. Later, the site will present not only the sound part of the project but also photographs, videos, the history of the musical Odesa, and its outstanding representatives.
