The last day didn't start very well because it was raining again and it looked like it would be like that for almost the whole day. But however, the day was just beginning so we headed to Sremska Mitrovica around 8am.

On the map above you can see that it took us about 25 minutes from Ruma to Sremska Mitrovica. Sremska Mitrovica is the place I most often worked on during my studies. Seminar projects in three different subjects. Sremska Mitrovica is one of the oldest cities in Vojvodina and Serbia. It used to be called Sirmium. The ancient city of Sirmium, which was located on the territory of today's Sremska Mitrovica, was the capital of the Roman Empire during the period of the tetrarchy. He was also called the "famous mother of cities". Numerous Roman emperors were born in Sremska Mitrovica or its surroundings. Today this city has about 39,000 inhabitants.

A tour of the Imperial Palace is planned in Sremska Mitrovica. The approach to the palace by bus was a bit more complicated and all that was made difficult by the heavy rain. But somehow we ran out of the bus with umbrellas and we entered the palace.

The picture is from the internet, just to show you what this building looks like from the outside

This building is a cultural monument of great importance.
The Imperial Palace as a part of Sirmium, once a magnificent and powerful Roman city, and today in the central core of Sremska Mitrovica, was first mentioned in the 2nd century, during the stay of Marcus Aurelius. Today's Sremska Mitrovica hides traces of Sirmium under its streets and houses. At this place, the remains of the imperial palace in which the Roman emperors stayed during a short or long stay and stay were reliably ascertained, which was often ordered in the late antique period.

On this board on the left is a list of all the emperors who ruled the former Sirmium.

Here are some pictures from the interior of this building. In the pictures you can see the remains of the Imperial Palace.

After we toured the palace and listened to the woman who hosted us there and told us the history of Sirmium, we made a short tour of Sremska Mitrovica by bus because of the time that prevented us from visiting the city on foot.

Our next destination was the Special Nature Reserve Zasavica which is located 18km from Sremska Mitrovica.

This place is under the First Degree Of Protection. Zasavica has been placed under the protection of the state of Serbia since 1997, and since 2001 it has been a member of the Europarc Federation. Zasavica is an oasis for about 200 species of plants, 12 species of birds and about 20 species of fish.

The rain didn't stop falling. We were hosted by a man who told us all about ths place and protected species in this area. Unfortunately, due to bad weather conditions, I didn't take photos of this place, so I leave only a few photos taken from the Internet :(

We continued our journey towards Šid which was our next destination. Šid is a city settlement located on the slopes of the mountain Fruška gora. This is also the westernmost municipality in Srem, only a few kilometers from the border with Croatia. It has about 15,000 inhabitants.

We went on a tour of the gallery of Sava Šumanović. Sava Šumanović was one of the most important painters of Serbian art of the 20th century. He lived from 1896 to 1942. The gallery was founded in 1952 thanks to a gift from the painter's mother in the form of a house and 417 paintings. Today, the house and gallery represent an immovable cultural asset as a cultural monument of great importance.

After touring the gallery, we headed towards the center of Sid on foot, and the rain was still pouring. We all went together to the Picasso pizzeria (all just painters hahaha) to have lunch. Imagine when 50 people entered the pizzeria at once, and when each of us ordered something to eat. The waitress had to call reinforcements hahaha 🍕😂

It belongs to the municipality of Irig (I also wrote about this in one of my works during my studies) and if the small place has significant sights that are worth visiting if you pass here.

We visited the 5-star Hotel 'Premier Aqua' located in Vrdnik, where tourism has developed significantly in recent years. Vrdnik is a spa town with only about 3100 inhabitants.

This modern 5-star hotel has a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and an on-site restaurant. Free WiFi is available throughout the property. All accommodation units at the Premier Aqua Hotel feature a flat-screen TV, telephone, minibar and safe. The private bathroom has a shower, free toiletries and a hairdryer. Each unit overlooks the mountains and the pool, and has hypoallergenic bedding. Hotel facilities include a business center and a variety of services such as car rental, laundry and dry cleaning services, as well as room service and free parking for all guests. The hotel also has a specialist Aqua Medica physical medicine and rehabilitation clinic. A range of spa, fitness and beauty treatments are available.

We continued to move around Fruška Gora and the last destination of our five-day trip around Vojvodina is Iriški Venac. It is the top of Fruška gora, 502 meters above sea level. Here is the Freedom Monument in front of which we took the last group photo from this trip.

20190601_170604.jpg

It was built in 1951 as part of the fallen fighters and is a symbol of the People's Liberation Struggle of the people of Vojvodina. It was ceremoniously opened on July 7, 1951, on the tenth anniversary of the Day of the Uprising of the People of Serbia. The author of the monument is the sculptor Sreten Stojanović.

The monument consists of a high obelisk topped by a woman-victory with her arms raised high, a gesture calling on the people to take up arms. On the pedestal from which the obelisk grows, there is a sculpture of a group of partisans. On the side walls of the monument, there are bronze reliefs with scenes from the People's Liberation Struggle.
