Hello, friends!
The last weekend we visited the fortress "Peristera" near the town of Peshtera.
Actually, we hadn't heard about the place, we discovered it while choosing a destination for a walk.
PERISTERA
(translated from the Greek "Peristera" means dove)
We were surprised by the beauty all around. We read and explored with interest the history of the area. I will try to show you all the grandeur of the fort with the pictures I took.

Миналия уикенд посетихме крепостта "Перистера" край град Пещера.
Всъщност, не бяхме чували за местността, открихме я случайно, докато си избирахме дестинация за разходка.
(в превод от гръцки "Перистера" означава гълъб)
Бяхме изненадани от красотата наоколо. С голям интерес научавахме историята и опознавахме местността. Ще се опитам да ви покажа цялото величие на крепостта със снимките, които направих.
Let's start the tour
The fortress is located above the town on a hill called St. Petka.
We found out that Peristera was restored and opened to visitors in 2014. Prior to that, the hill was for many years only remains of a medieval fortress.
Крепостта се намира над града на хълм, наречен "Света Петка".
Разбрахме, че Перистера е реставрирана и отворена за посетители едва 2014 година. Преди това на хълма дълги години е имало само
останки от средновековна крепост.
Translation: This is the chapel "Holy Forty Martyrs"
During the second reconstruction of the fortress (early 6th century) the towers were converted into churches and they provided spiritual protection for the fortress. In them the soldiers prayed before battle and they gave thanks when they defeated the enemy.
At the entrance to the chapel people write their prayers/wishes on paper and pin them here, they believe that their wishes will come true.
На входа на параклиса хората пишат своите молитви/желания на хартия и ги закрепват тук, те вярват, че желанията им ще сбъднат. 🙏
First floor
On the second floor there are armour and weapons from the medieval period. Visitors can take pictures with them.
На втория етаж има доспехи и оръжия от епохата на средновековието. Посетителите могат да се снимат с тях.
Third floor
On the walls there are panels showing more than 300 finds: coins, pieces of pottery and jewellery.
По стените има пана, които показват намерените над 300 находки: монети, части от глинени съдове и накити.

From the terrace you can see a large part of the hill.
In the highest part of the hill there are grouped stones, scientists believe they are the remains of a Thracian sanctuary.
One of the stones is in the shape of a dove and this is probably where the name of the fortress comes from.
От терасата се вижда голяма част от хълма.
В най-високата част на хълма има групирани камъни, учените смятат, че са остатък от тракийско светилище.
Един от камъните е с формата на гълъб и вероятно от там идва името на крепостта.
We left the chapel and took the path that leads to the basilica.
Излязохме от параклиса и поехме по пътеката, която води до базиликата.

Northeast church tower number 5.
In addition to its security functions
has fulfilled the important role
of the spiritual centre of the citadel.
It was opened after the southeast church.
During the excavation fragments were found
of frescoes, marble pieces
of holy water vessels,
parts of arrows and coins.
Such a unique combination
tower-church is not known in Bulgaria
and is matched by only two other fortresses,
but they are outside the country.
The one-aisle church-towers
were built under Emperor
Justinian (527-565)"
The length of the fortress wall is 253m.
Red markings on the wall show where the authentic wall was.
Along the wall there are 28 chambers in which archaeologists found 75 pithos (these are large ancient Greek pottery vessels),
most of them left where they were found.
They call them the refrigerators of antiquity. Wheat, olive oil and other foodstuffs were stored in them.

Дължината на крепостната стена е 253м.
Червена маркировка, която се вижда, показва до къде е бил автентичния зид.
Покрай стената има 28 помещения, в които археолозите намират 75 питоса (това са големи глинени древногръцки съдове),
повечето от тях са оставени на местата, на които са намерени.
Наричат ги хладилниците на древността. В тях се е съхранявало жито, зехтин и други хранителни продукти.

We sat down for a short break and headed back, but along the lane on the other side of the hill.
Ние седнахме за кратка почивка и поехме обратно по алеята от другата страна на хълма.
We left happy that we were able to see this wonder of Bulgaria and go back in time.
