The construction of the monuments inside Kathmandu Durbar Square was supposed to have begun from 10th century. Later more temples, monuments were added during 16th century. Many believed that its construction might have begun as early as 3rd century. Durbar in Nepali means the "Palace for the Royal". It was enlisted in UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1979. There are three durbar squares in Kathmandu i.e. Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square and Kathmandu Durbar Square itself and all of them are enlisted in UNESCO World Heritage Site List due to the ancient history, arts and culture they carry. It was at this same place where kings used to be crowned when they succeeded to the throne. To the entrance of this palace is a Hindu ape like god statue of Hanuman in golden color. It is known as Hanuman Dhoka.

I went here on Sunday but I didn't know that there was a festival called "Indra Jatra" and the president has been invited for the same. The security personnel were trying to clear the way for the president. The crowd of people were huge to observe the traditional festival of Newari caste people as you can see in the photo they were sitting in the temple. Each of the temples have their own name and I don't know any of their name. The best time to visit the square will be during the afternoon and evening as well.

However, I know of this shrine. It is the statue of Kal Bhairav. The sculpture was found in 5th century in the nearby paddy field and then shifted to the durbar square later by King Pratap Malla who rules the Nepal during Malla dynasty. The god himself looks very fierce and looks like a demon slayer from the past according to Hindu mythology holding six arms with sword and and a shield and under his feet is a defeated monster or demon. This place is also a holy spiritual place for Buddhist people who come here to worship and meditate. Another main important aspect of this complex is pigeons which are regarded as the symbol of peace. People also come here to feed thousands of this bird.

The square mainly consists of temples built with Pagoda style. The square used to be home to the royal families until 19th families and currently it is being used as a museum. Thousands of folks visit this palace everyday. For me it is occasional visit. The palace has been considered a great importance to Nepal history as it reflects the arts, craftsmanship and architecture of ancient Nepal and also the most notable architecture of whole Nepal. Most of the monuments had been greatly damaged in the year 2015 due to the earthquake and is still in reconstruction stages. Still Newari people are carrying out their century old tradition in this square.
