After the great surprise we had with the mountains in La Pampa, it was time to continue our trip. Before leaving, we had read a lot of advice from other travelers and the recommendation was not to drive more than 700 km per day to avoid fatigue on the route, so it was necessary to make intermediate stops to spend the night. One of them was already leaving La Pampa, in the province of Neuquén: a small rocky town called Piedra del Águila was the chosen place ❤️.
Después de la gran sorpresa que nos llevamos con las montañas en La Pampa, era hora de continuar nuestro viaje. Antes de salir habíamos leído muchos consejos de otros viajeros y lo recomendado era no manejar más de 700 km por día para evitar el cansancio en la ruta, por lo que fue necesario hacer paradas intermedias para pasar la noche. Una de ellas fue ya saliendo de la Pampa, en la provincia de Neuquén: un pequeño pueblo rocoso llamado Piedra del Águila fue el lugar elegido ❤️.
From the Lihué-Calel National Park we traveled more than 500 km to get there. My designated role throughout this ride was co-driver and I had never been on such a long car ride before, so my job was to keep my cousin company while he drove. I tried to talk as much as possible to keep us awake but sometimes sleep would overtake me and I would fall asleep. When that happened, he would suggest making a little intermediate stop so that we could stop to stretch our legs and wash our faces and then we were ready to continue.
Desde el Parque Nacional Lihué-Calel recorrimos más 500 km hasta llegar hasta allí. Mi rol designado durante todo este paseo fue el de copiloto y nunca antes había hecho un viaje tan largo en auto, por lo que mi tarea fue hacerle companía a mi primo mientras manejaba. Intenté hablar lo más posible para mantenernos despiertos pero en ocasiones me vencía el sueño y me quedaba dormida. Cuando eso sucedía, sugería hacer alguna pequeña parada intermedia para que nos pararamos a estirar las piernas y lavarnos la cara y luego ya estabamos listos para seguir.

When we arrived, we found a small town with some interesting orange rock formations. They were not like the typical mountains that Im used to seeing: these were literally giant stones on the side of the town. In addition, we arrived almost at sunset, so the sun also generated a very beautiful color ❤️.
Cuando llegamos, nos encontramos con un pequeño pueblo con unas interesantes formaciones rocosas anaranjadas. No eran como las típicas montañas que estoy acostumbrada a ver: estas literalmente eran piedras gigantes al costado del pueblo. Además, llegamos casi al atardecer, por lo que el sol también les generaba un color muy hermoso ❤️.
Our main idea was to go to a place that was listed on the map as "Municipal Camping", but when we got there we found a completely abandoned place: there was no electricity, no water and the toilets were unusable. It was literally like camping on any trail, so we had to change our plans and find a hotel. Can you believe I called over 20 places in this little place and it was ALL location complete? LOL. I didn't know this place was so busy 😅.
Nuestra idea principal era ir a un lugar que figuraba en el mapa como "Camping Municipal", pero cuando llegamos allí nos encontramos con un lugar completamente abandonado: no había luz, ni agua y los baños eran inutilizables. Literalmente era como acampar en cualquier vereda, así que tuvimos que cambiar de planes y buscar un hotel. ¿Pueden creer que llamé a más de 20 lugares en este pequeño lugar y estaba TODO con ubicación completa? jaja. No sabía que este sitio era tan concurrido 😅.
In the end, all I got was a room under repair in a recently opened hotel. Well, it was that or sleep in the open without a bathroom so we agreed. Since the hotel was a few blocks away, we went to see it and it really wasn't that bad, it just didn't have a television and some electrical wiring was missing, something that didn't matter to us because it was only for one night. And once the issue of accommodation was resolved, while my cousins played basketball on the court in the square, my aunt and I went to explore the place a bit ❤️.
Finalmente, lo único que conseguí fue una habitación en reparación dentro de un hotel que habían abierto hace poco. Bien, era eso o dormir en la intemperie sin baño así que accedimos. Como el hotel quedaba a pocas cuadras lo fuimos a ver y realmente no estaba tan mal, solo que no tenía televisión y faltaban algunas terminaciones eléctricas, algo que poco nos importaba porque solo era para pasar una noche. Y una vez solucionado el tema del alojamiento, mientras mis primos jugaban al basquet en la cancha de la plaza, mi tía y yo fuimos a explorar un poco el lugar ❤️.
One block from this place is Route 237 by which we arrived. There all the traffic noise but on this side everything was so quiet that it seemed like another place completely. There were few houses, the streets were wide and dirt and the main attraction of Piedra del Águila was, forgive the redundancy, the stone of the eagle 😅.
A una cuadra de este lugar está la ruta 237 por la cual llegamos. Allí todo el ruido del tráfico pero en este costado era todo tan tranquilo que parecía otro lugar completamente. Habían pocas casas, las calles eran anchas y de tierra y el principal atractivo de Piedra del Águila era, valga la redundancia, la piedra del águila 😅.
This monument was located in a kind of park on the rock. To access there there is a stone staircase and although it is not so high, it is a bit tiring to climb up there but it is worth it because you can have a good panoramic view of the town and the rocks. And by the way to exercise a little 😂.
Este monumento estaba situado en una especie de parque sobre la roca. Para acceder allí hay una escalera de piedras y si bien no es taaan alto, cansa un poco subir hasta allí pero vale la pena porque se puede tener una buena vista panorámica del pueblo y de las rocas. Y de paso para ejercitarse un poco 😂.

As you got closer to the eagle you realized that it was not as small as it seemed from below. This sculpture is full of details and there is even a sign that explains the origin of the name for this place. It says that an army officer on his way to San Martin de Los Andes shot and killed an eagle (apparently for no reason). And as later they had to return to look for some things that had been forgotten, they called this place "the stone of the eagle". Honestly, it seems like an ugly story, but the beauty of the place makes up for it a bit 😂.
A medida que te acercas al águila te dabas cuenta de que no era tan pequeño como parecía desde abajo. Esta escultura está llena de detalles e incluso hay un cartel que explica el origen de el nombre para este lugar. Dice que un oficial del ejército que se dirigía a San Martín de Los Andes disparó a un águila y lo mató (aparentemente sin razón). Y como después tuvieron que volver a buscar unas cosas que se habían olvidado a este lugar lo llamaron "la piedra del águila". Sinceramente, me parece una historia media fea pero bueno, la belleza del lugar lo compensa un poco 😂.
Below the eagle is a platform where you can stand and take some pictures. I don't usually have vertigo and stuff, but this flat with bars made me a little scared and I didn't get so close to the shore. I was still able to get a few shots of the town from above before the sun went down at all 😅.
Debajo del águila hay una plataforma en donde puedes pararte y tomar algunas fotografías. Yo no suelo tener vértigo y esas cosas, pero este piso de rejas me hizo dar un poco de miedo y no me acerqué tanto a la orilla. De todas formas pude hacer algunas tomas del pueblo desde arriba antes de que el sol se pusiera del todo 😅.
My aunt and I were up there for quite a long time, sitting on a bench and admiring the scenery. I would have liked to have had my mate with me but it would have been too much 😂. At least we were able to enjoy a beautiful and colorful summer sunset before going to the hotel. Thank you nature ❤️.
MI tía y yo estuvimos allí arriba un rato bastante largo, sentadas en un banco y admirando el paisaje. Me hubiese gustado tener mi mate conmigo pero ya hubiese sido demasiado 😂. Al menos pudimos disfrutar de un lindo atardecer veraniego y colorido antes de ir para el hotel. Gracias naturaleza ❤️.
Making a total balance of the trip, that night was one of the best I slept. At that time I still did not know that several frozen nights awaited me in a tent: if I had known, I would have valued it more hahaha. But even so, I don't regret anything and I would do it again a thousand times. The next morning we left the hotel very early and continued on our way: we were already very close to our main destination ❤️.
Haciendo un balance total del viaje, esa noche fue una de las que mejor dormí. Para ese momento aún no sabía que me esperaban varias noches congeladas en una carpa: de haberlo sabido lo hubiese valorado más jajaja. Pero así y todo no me arrepiento de nada y lo volvería hacer una y mil veces. A la mañana siguiente dejamos el hotel muy temprano y continuamos nuestro camino: ya estabamos muy cerca de nuestro destino principal ❤️.
