Hello Hivers
Iguana Island, Cuba
I generally don't do group tours when traveling, but this was well worth it.
A catamaran took a couple dozen of us to a small nature reserve called Cayo Iguana.
Plenty of dolphins escorted the catamaran and we stopped along the way and snorkeled for a while at a reef. Numerous colourful fish and coral were seen. We ... ....
finally arrived at the dock.
There are no facilities just the thatch roof with some picnic tables for a delicious lunch we would be served later that day.
True to it's name the iguanas were everywhere.
They are known as the Cuban Rock Iguana, or just Cuban Iguana. The guide will give you leaves to feed them, being herbivores they don't want tourists to....
be bringing any food to feed them.
They are quite accustomed to people and are easy subjects for a pic. During lunch they climb right up on the table and have to be persuaded to leave.....
Another animal to greet you is the Hutia, a type of rodent. There are about 20 different species of them and many just call them tree rats. They are a food source for the Cuban people.
It was....
Cuban Iguana
an exciting and interesting day.
I highly recommend taking the tour and would....
Hutia
do so if I am ever back in Cuba.
