Among the many beautiful towns on the eastern coast of Venezuela is Rio Caribe and in general the sites of the municipality to which it belongs. The municipality is named Arismendi, after the hero of Independence, and is located in the northeastern part of the state Sucre.
Entre los muchos pueblos hermosos de la costa oriental venezolana se encuentra Río Caribe y en general los sitios del municipio al que pertenece. El municipio lleva por nombre Arismendi, por el prócer de la Independencia, y está ubicado en la parte noreste del estado Sucre.

According to historians, Río Caribe was founded at the beginning of the 18th century by the Spanish colonizers, but its subsequent development was greatly influenced by the presence of the Corsican French who came to the area from islands in the Caribbean Sea, known as the Antilles. This extensive geographical area where the Caribbean River is located was called Paria by the aborigines, as referred to by Columbus in the Letter to the Catholic Kings on his third voyage, and which he baptized Land of Grace. This is what Columbus affirms:
(...) but I am very much in my soul that where I said, in the Land of Grace, there is the Earthly Paradise.
Según los historiadores, Río Caribe fue fundado a comienzos del siglo XVIII por los colonizadores españoles, pero en su desarrollo posterior influyó grandemente la presencia de los franceses corsos venidos a esa zona desde islas del mar Caribe, conocidas como las Antillas. A esta extensa zona geográfica donde se sitúa Río Caribe los aborígenes la llamaban Paria, según refiere Colón en la Carta a los Reyes Católicos de su tercer viaje, y que él bautizó como Tierra de Gracia. Así lo afirma Colón:
(…) mas yo muy asentado tengo en mi ánima que allí donde dije, en Tierra de Gracia, se halla el Paraíso Terrenal.
Precisely, it is to some of the enchantments -we would say to the wonder, the magic, the grace- of this pariah land that I would like to walk you through in this post about this town and municipality, which I have visited many times and to which I always want to return.
Its natural attractions, which combine the sea and the jungle, became since the last decades of the 20th century a decisive factor in tourism, and local or foreign initiatives to encourage it. Thus, in the city itself (Río Caribe) and its outskirts, there was a proliferation of very attractive inns, installed in traditional houses that were refurbished with very good taste and careful attention to visitors. I was able to enjoy Posada Villa Antillana:
Precisamente, es a algunos de los encantos -diríamos a la maravilla, la magia, la gracia- de esta tierra pariana por la que quisiera pasearlos en este post acerca de este pueblo y municipio, que he visitado muchas veces y al que siempre quiero volver.
Sus atractivos naturales, que conjugan el mar y la selva, se convirtieron desde las últimas décadas del siglo XX en factor decisivo del turismo, y de iniciativas locales o foráneas para incentivarlo. Así, en la propia ciudad (Río Caribe) y sus afueras proliferaron posadas muy llamativas, instaladas en casas tradicionales que fueron refaccionadas con muy buen gusto y de esmerada atención a los visitantes. Yo pude disfrutar de Posada Villa Antillana:
It is an example of the type of building with its beautiful Antillean style doors and windows, and its pleasant spaces to be at ease with the environment.
Although you can also find more modern spaces with swimming pools for tourists, as in "El Picoteo de Lily".
Es un ejemplo del tipo de edificación con sus bellas puertas y ventanas al estilo antillano, y sus gratos espacios para estar en calma con el ambiente.
Aunque también pueden encontrarse espacios más modernos con piscinas para los turistas, como en "El Picoteo de Lily".
On the wooded road to the beaches of the municipality are different places dedicated to the cultivation, production and marketing of cocoa (it is said that Rio Caribe was called "the city of the lords of cocoa"), as is known, native product of America. Among these places there is a space dedicated to cultural diffusion, the Museum of the Pariano Cocoa, located in a sector with a name as sonorous as its people, "Chacaracual". En la carretera boscosa hacia las playas del municipio se encuentran diferentes lugares dedicados al cultivo, producción y comercialización del cacao (se dice que Río caribe fue llamada "la ciudad de los señores del cacao"), como se sabe, producto autóctono de América. Entre esos lugares existe un espacio dedicado a la difusión cultural, el Museo del Cacao Pariano, situado en un sector con un nombre tan sonoro como su gente, "Chacaracual". De ese espacio conservo esta foto:
Our first arrival point is the famous Medina Beach, considered one of the most beautiful in Venezuela (although it has a lot of competition in the eastern zone), about 25 kms. from Rio Caribe. It is bordered by coconut palms and abundant vegetation, with extensive sand and a very welcoming sea, generally placid, although it has its moments of strong waves. In its ample space the locals offer typical foods.
Nuestro primer punto de llegada es la famosa Playa Medina, considerada una de las más bellas de Venezuela (aunque tiene mucha competencia en la zona oriental), a unos 25 kms. aproximadamente de Río Caribe. Está bordeada de cocoteros y abundante vegetación, con extensa arena y de un mar muy acogedor, generalmente plácido, si bien tiene sus momentos de fuerte oleaje. En su amplio espacio los lugareños ofrecen comidas típicas.
There are many beaches in this very long municipality, each with its own particular attraction and its own formations. For example we find Chaguarama de Loero, which is about 15 km from Rio Caribe. It is a little known beach or not so much as Playa Medina; its sand is rather reddish and the sea a little rough, but equally beautiful. Here I leave you a picture taken from a nearby hill where you go down to it:
Son muchas las playas que nos ofrece este municipio de amplísima longitud; cada cual con su particular atractivo y sus propias formaciones. Por ejemplo encontramos a Chaguarama de Loero, que queda a unos 15 km de Río Caribe. Es una playa poco conocida o no tanto como Playa Medina; su arena es más bien rojiza y el mar un poco agitado, pero igualmente hermoso. Nearby is a paradisiacal tourist spot, to use Columbus' amazement. By going there I was able to get to know Chaguarama. It is the Hotel Villas Playa de Uva. I met it when I was just starting several years ago. Located in a very secluded place, and also away from the alienating way of urban life, it offers an unparalleled stay, where the tourist can retire to an almost contemplative life, full of the splendor of its vegetation, of the delicacy of its presentations, as you can see in some photos that I keep:
Cerca de allí está un lugar turístico paradisíaco, para usar el asombro de Colón. Por ir a este pude conocer Chaguarama. Se trata del Hotel Villas Playa de Uva. Lo conocí cuando estaba recién comenzando hace varios años. Ubicado en un paraje bien apartado, y también apartado él del modo alienante de vida urbano, ofrece una estancia sin igual, donde el turista puede retirarse a una vida casi contemplativa, llena del esplendor de su vegetación, de la delicadeza de sus presentaciones, como podrán ver en algunas fotos que conservo:
The entire coast of this territory (Municipality of Arismendi) offers us landscapes and an unusual view, full of wonder. Our gaze is solaced by the surprise of its rocky formations, of its vegetation very close to the jungle.
Toda la costa de este territorio (Municipio Arismendi) nos va ofreciendo parajes y una vista inusitada, llena de asombro. Nuestra mirada se solaza en la sorpresa de sus formaciones rocosas, de su vegetación muy próxima a lo selvático.
Finally, we reach one of the most distant points of Rio Caribe, but which also offers a new attraction for our eyes tired of urban life. I am referring to San Juan de las Galdonas, a town of humble fishermen, like almost all these towns, where loneliness and the enjoyment of natural beauty have come together. I leave you with some photos with a view of the sea between morning and evening, taken from the balcony of an inn (which I don't know if it is preserved) with a striking name: "The three caravels" (in reference to those of Columbus).
Finalmente, alcanzamos uno de los puntos más distanciados de Río Caribe, pero que igualmente brinda una atracción inédita para nuestros ojos cansados de vida urbana. Me refiero a San Juan de las Galdonas, un pueblo de humildes pobladores pescadores, como casi todos estos pueblos, en el que se han juntado la soledad y el gozo de la belleza natural. Les dejo unas fotos con vista al mar entre la mañana y el atardecer, tomadas desde el balcón de una posada (que desconozco si se conserva) de llamativo nombre: "Las tres carabelas" (por alusión a las de Colón).
Thus, I close my walk through the charms (and enchantments) of Rio Caribe and its surroundings, giving you three images collected in photos taken there, which synthesize the natural and human matter of that "land of grace":
