Todo empezó cuando decidimos viajar a un destino paradisíaco para celebrar nuestro primer aniversario de bodas. Por supuesto, había reservado con unos meses de antelación para evitar cualquier inconveniente de hospedaje debido a la gran afluencia de visitantes. Nuestro recorrido comenzó desde la ciudad de Caracas, la capital de nuestro país y donde vivimos. Mi esposo es el encargado de conducir y para esta travesía debíamos recorrer al menos 324 kilómetros por los estados Miranda y Anzoátegui. La primera autopista que tomamos fue la Francisco Fajardo en dirección hacia el oriente del país. Al salir de Caracas, dejamos la Francisco Fajardo y entramos en la autopista Guarenas-Guatire que para este recorrido debemos llamar Troncal 9 y que conecta con todos los pueblos hasta nuestro destino principal en esta primera parte de la travesía, es decir, de Guatire a Caucagua, luego El Guapo, Boca de Uchire, Puerto Píritu, Barcelona y finalmente hacia Puerto La Cruz en donde debíamos abordar el Ferry que nos llevaría por mar hasta la isla.

Cabe destacar que si vives en Venezuela o si estás haciendo turismo en el país y ya te encuentras en territorio venezolano, puedes llegar a Margarita de dos formas: la que escogimos nosotros por vía terrestre y marítima o por medio de un vuelo directo a la isla. Lógicamente, si viajas en avión llegarás en un dos por tres y te evitarás un día de viaje porque en tan sólo 30 minutos estarías pisando suelo margariteño en un vuelo muy corto. Si vienes desde el extranjero, debes chequear si existe una ruta directa. Hasta donde pude averiguar, existen vuelos desde Chile, Suecia, Colombia y algunas islas del Caribe como Aruba y Trinidad y Tobago.

Al llegar a Puerto la Cruz tuvimos que esperar nuestro turno para abordar el ferry. Mi esposo entró con el carro por el área destinada a la carga de automóviles y yo tuve que esperar en una larga fila desde donde nos daban acceso. El viaje en ferry duró aproximadamente tres horas y media porque era una embarcación pequeña. La distancia por mar fue de 150 kilómetros aproximadamente. Sinceramente viajar en avión es de lo más cómodo y rápido, pero a mí esposo y a mí nos gusta llevarnos el carro para poder desplazarnos por la isla a placer. Podíamos alquilar vehículo o usar taxi, pero el costo es muy elevado y nuevamente, debido a la temporada y afluencia de turistas, preferimos no tentar la suerte y evitar problemas de logística, además porque de esa manera tenemos total libertad de hacer lo que queremos en el momento que lo queremos hacer y sin ningún retraso.

Ubicada en el extremo sur y central de la isla, nuestro puerto de llegada a la Isla de Margarita es Punta de Piedras. Desde allí hicimos un recorrido de aproximadamente una hora hasta llegar al hotel que quedaba casi en la punta Noreste de la isla o, en otras palabras, a 54 km de distancia.

Esperando llegar a la Isla. Dentro del ferry teníamos a disposición los siguientes servicios: aire acondicionado, baño, televisión, venta de snacks, golosinas y bebidas

El hotel que reservamos fue el Hotel Portofino-Portobello. Un gran complejo de estilo ALL INCLUSIVE / TODO INCLUIDO que cuenta con 501 habitaciones, súper cómodas. Además también tiene seis restaurantes, uno de ellos pizzería, a la carta o tipo buffet. Cuenta con varias piscinas, tanto deportivas como para recrearse o descansar. Igualmente cerca de las piscinas hay kioscos que te brindan snacks y bebidas alcohólicas y no alcohólicas. Como tiene acceso directo a la playa, allí también puedes recrearte con actividades acuáticas y siempre con mucha seguridad, porque la playa es semi privada. Además cuenta con sala de conferencias y un gran estacionamiento. Su relación calidad/precio era excelente para ese momento.

Después de hacer el respectivo check-in, nos entregaron la llave de la habitación, nos instalamos y luego hicimos un tour por el hotel donde pudimos disfrutar de las piscinas y la playa que estaba ahí mismito.

En estos hoteles la comida siempre es muy deliciosa, aunque sea tipo buffet. Pudimos saborear exquisitos platos como la fosforera, pescado frito, mariscos, empanadas de cazón y mariscos que son mis favoritas. Por las noches podías ir a la discoteca o a los shows que ofrecían para la diversión de los huéspedes. Todo en el mismo hotel.

La Isla de Margarita es un destino perfecto para los amantes de los deportes acuáticos. Aquí es común la práctica de surf, submarinismo, windsurf, kitesurf entre otros. Para ese momento no pudimos hacer nada de lo antes mencionado porque estaba recién embarazada de mi primer hijo, entonces nos tocó relajarnos en el hotel. La verdad la pasamos increíble a pesar de que no sentirme bien debido a los malestares propios de un primer embarazo.

Margarita es una isla ubicada en el Mar Caribe. La más grande del estado Nueva Esparta en Venezuela. Antes del descubrimiento de América por parte de los españoles, estaba habitada por indígenas llamados Guaiqueríes y su idioma era el warao. En aquellos días, se podían encontrar perlas con mucha facilidad y para los colonizadores esta isla representaba el paraíso, por lo que desde entonces se le ha conocido como "La Perla del Caribe".

Por allá en 1830, cuando la isla fue anexada al virreinato de la Nueva Granada. La isla de Margarita se convirtió en una de las primeras 13 provincias que conformaron la República de Venezuela. Su ubicación privilegiada la hace puerta de entrada a Sudamérica y El Caribe. De modo que se convirtió en epicentro de muchos encuentros bélicos de la época de liberación y por el robo continuo de sus riquezas, perlas en su mayoría, hasta su total extinción. Es un lugar con mucha historia, pero no quiero aburrirlos con la Historia de Venezuela, así que hablemos del turismo.

PLAYAS

Es uno de los lugares turísticos más concurridos por turistas tanto nacionales como internacionales, debido a varios factores: clima tropical por su ubicación en El Mar Caribe. Sus playas son tan diversas que hay para todos los gustos y actividades. Hay playas como El Yaque, que es perfecta para la práctica del Windsurf y Kitesurf. Playa El Agua y Parguito que se han convertido en playas muy visitadas por surfistas a escala mundial. Otro lugar que no pueden dejar de visitar es La restinga. Allí te embarcas en un peñero (lancha) y haces un recorrido por hermosos manglares hasta llegar al extremo norte de la isla a una playa de estilo oceánico donde puedes tomar hermosas fotografías del paisaje y pasar un rato agradable. Si eres amante de las compras, existe gran variedad de centros comerciales y tiendas por departamentos que puedes visitar como el Sambil Margarita.

Existen infinidad de hoteles en Margarita, desde los más económicos como los hostales que son perfectos para un viaje estilo mochilero hasta los grandes hoteles 5 estrellas con impresionantes instalaciones que incluso poseen casino y transporte interno para huéspedes como el Laguna Mar, aunque en este momento se encuentra cerrado debido a la pandemia.

Recomendaciones al visitar una isla caribeña:

• Debes llevar bloqueador solar, gorra, lentes de sol.
• Debes beber por lo menos 2 litros de agua diario para que no te deshidrates.
• Botiquín de primeros auxilios.
• Si puedes sal del hotel para que conozcas más de esta bella isla y sus paisajes.
• Lleva cámara y recuerda recargar la batería.
• Y simplemente diviértete con responsabilidad.

Margarita Island: The Caribbean Pearl

It all started when we decided to travel to a paradisiacal destination to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. Of course, I had booked a few months in advance to avoid any inconvenience of accommodation due to the large influx of visitors. Our tour started from the city of Caracas, the capital of our country and where we live. My husband is in charge of driving and for this trip, we had to travel at least 324 kilometers through the states of Miranda and Anzoátegui. The first highway we took was the Francisco Fajardo towards the east of the country. Leaving Caracas, we left the Francisco Fajardo and entered the Guarenas-Guatire highway, which for this route we should call Troncal 9 and which connects with all the towns up to our main destination in this first part of the journey, that is, from Guatire to Caucagua, then El Guapo, Boca de Uchire, Puerto Píritu, Barcelona and finally to Puerto La Cruz where we had to board the ferry that would take us by sea to the island.

It is worth mentioning that if you live in Venezuela or if you are doing tourism in the country and you are already in Venezuelan territory, you can get to Margarita in two ways: the one we chose by land and sea or by a direct flight to the island. Logically, if you travel by plane you will arrive in no time and you will avoid a day trip because in only 30 minutes you will be on Margarita's soil on a very short flight. If you are coming from abroad, you should check if there is a direct route. As far as I could find out, there are flights from Chile, Sweden, Colombia, and some Caribbean islands such as Aruba and Trinidad and Tobago.

Arriving in Puerto la Cruz we had to wait our turn to board the ferry. My husband entered with the car through the car loading area and I had to wait in a long line from where we were given access. The ferry trip took about three and a half hours because it was a small boat. The distance by sea was approximately 150 kilometers. Honestly, traveling by plane is the most comfortable and fastest, but my husband and I like to take the car with us so we can move around the island at our leisure. We could rent a car or use a cab, but the cost is very high and again, due to the season and influx of tourists, we prefer not to tempt fate and avoid logistical problems, also because that way we have total freedom to do what we want to do at the time we want to do it and without any delay.

Located at the southern and central tip of the island, our port of arrival on Margarita Island is Punta de Piedras. From there we made a journey of about an hour to reach the hotel which was almost at the northeastern tip of the island or, in other words, 54 km away.

The hotel we booked was the Portofino-Portobello Hotel. A large ALL-INCLUSIVE style complex that has 501 rooms, super comfortable. It also has six restaurants, one of them is a pizzeria, a la carte, or buffet style. It has several swimming pools, both for sports and for recreation or relaxation. Also near the pools, there are kiosks that offer snacks and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. As it has direct access to the beach, there you can also enjoy water activities and always with a lot of security, because the beach is semi-private. It also has a conference room and a large parking lot. It's quality/price ratio was excellent for that time.

After checking in, we were given our room key, settled in, and then took a tour of the hotel where we were able to enjoy the pools and the beach that was right there.

In these hotels, the food is always very delicious, even if it is buffet style. We were able to savor exquisite dishes such as "fosforera" (delicious soup created with different fishes and seafood), fried fish, seafood, dogfish, and seafood empanadas which are my favorite. In the evenings you could go to the disco or to the shows offered for the amusement of the guests. All in the same hotel.

This time we decided to book another restaurant in the same hotel to eat a la carte food.

Margarita Island is a perfect destination for water sports lovers. Here it is common to practice surfing, scuba diving, windsurfing, kitesurfing, among others. At that time we could not do any of the above mentioned because I was just pregnant with my first child, so we had to relax at the hotel. The truth is that we had an incredible time despite not feeling well due to the discomforts of a first pregnancy.

The hotel offers all the equipment for you to practice one or another water sport. Here is a picture sitting on a beach kayak.

Margarita is an island located in the Caribbean Sea. It is the largest of the state of Nueva Esparta in Venezuela. Before the discovery of America by the Spaniards, it was inhabited by indigenous people called "Guaiqueríes" and their language was "Warao". In those days, pearls could be found very easily and for the colonizers this island represented paradise, so since then, it has been known as the "Pearl of the Caribbean".

Back in 1830, when the island was annexed to the viceroyalty of New Granada, it became one of the first 13 provinces that made up the Republic of Venezuela. Its privileged location makes it the gateway to South America and the Caribbean. It is one of the most visited tourist places by both national and international tourists, due to several factors: tropical climate due to its location in the Caribbean Sea. Its beaches are so diverse that there is something for all tastes and activities. There are beaches such as El Yaque, which is perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Playa El Agua and Parguito have become very popular with surfers worldwide. Another place you cannot miss is La Restinga. There you embark on a peñero (boat) and make a tour through beautiful mangroves until you reach the northern end of the island to an ocean-style beach where you can take beautiful pictures of the landscape and have a nice time. If you are a shopping lover, there is a great variety of malls and department stores that you can visit, such as the Sambil Margarita.

There are plenty of hotels in Margarita, from the cheapest like the hostels that are perfect for a backpacker-style trip to the big 5 star hotels with impressive facilities that even have a casino and internal transportation for guests like the Laguna Mar, although at the moment it is closed due to the pandemic.

Recommendations when visiting a Caribbean island:

• You should bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses.
• You should drink at least 2 liters of water daily so you don't get dehydrated.
• First aid kit.
• If you can get out of the hotel to get to know more of this beautiful island and its landscapes.
• Take your camera and remember to recharge the battery.
• And just have fun responsibly.
