New Tretyakov Gallery, Pimenov's exhibition.

Hello everyone!
October 2, 2021 I visited the exhibition of the famous Soviet artist Yuri Pimenov. The exhibition takes place at the New Tretyakov Gallery.

This is one of the galleries in Moscow, which I visit at least once a year. The State Tretyakov Gallery, founded by Pavel Tretyakov in 1856, is one of the most important art museums in Russia. The direction of the collection is Russian fine art. But the historic building in Lavrushinsky Lane by the end of the 20th century could not cope with the growing collection at all. Therefore, it was decided to exhibit the art of the 20th century in a new huge building on Krymsky Val.

I have already seen the main exposition many times. But the New Tretyakov Gallery is also famous for its temporary exhibitions. That's what I like to visit.
So, Yuri Pimenov (1903-1977). The exhibition presents about 170 works from 22 museum and private collections in Russia, Belarus and Latvia.

I have photographed almost all the exhibits of the exhibition and now I will show all them to you.
…It's the joke. It would be too hard for me to upload, and you to scroll through. No, this time I have selected several works and some general photographs from the exhibition. On the poster of the exhibition there is a picture "Way to the heavy industry" of 1927. But from childhood I knew not such a Pimenov at all. The fact is that his creative style is divided into different stages. In his youth, he was attracted by the German Expressionists. This corresponded to the times of revolution, new art. Based on this picture, the artist created propaganda posters.
I want to show a very impressive picture of that period, "Disabled War Veterans" (1926). Pimenov created a whole anti-war series of graphic and painting works "War - to War", where there were no battle scenes. The artist reproduced the terrible pictures of the traumas inflicted by the war on its participants.

(1926). Pimenov, like his friend Deineka, was close to the topic of sports. Painting "Football" (1926).

(1928). Unfortunately, not all of the artist's works have survived. This exhibition has an interesting feature. Some of the lost works have been reproduced from typographic prints. Take, for example, "Running" (1928).

s211015-106.JPG

And now the painting, which is for me the visiting card of this artist "New Moscow" (1937). It is easy to see that the painting was painted in a completely different manner, as if by a different artist. By this time, Pimenov had moved away from expressionism. Most likely, the authorities contributed a lot to this. The works of Pimenov and his comrades were criticized, creative associations were prohibited.
Well, the artist wanted to keep creating. He changed his style, his work became closer to impressionism. It seems to me that in the end he completely sincerely immersed himself in this style and reached the top in his new works. It was rumored that he himself destroyed some of the criticized previous works. But we do not know if this was actually the case.
The picture was written for the exhibition "Industry of Socialism" and immediately won the hearts of spectators and critics. The theme of Moscow as a changing city, the construction of new quarters and a new life - became one of the main themes in the work of Pimenov.
"New Moscow" conquers with freshness, movement, an unusual perspective, and will fill with some kind of light feeling and hopes for the best. The artist's wife posed for the image of the driver. The girl behind the wheel was also something new in those years.

I put next a picture with the same composition, but with a completely different mood and about a different time. Front-Line Road (1944). There is a girl behind the wheel again, perhaps the same one. But instead of a bright city washed by the rain, there are smashed houses, mud and darkness of war. This stark contrast struck me.

A bit of formal information. Tickets are sold only via the Internet, entrance by session every half hour. A ticket to the exhibition costs 600 rubles. But I am already a pensioner, I have a discount ticket for 300 rubles. I freely bought tickets Friday for Saturday. Nevertheless, there are quite a lot of people at the exhibition.

Post-war painting "New Year" (1949). Again, an unusual angle. As if you are a late guest, just entered the apartment and you see that a festive feast is already in full swing in the room. Everything is so touching and familiar from childhood.

s211015-110.JPG

Pimenov's still lifes are unusual, filled with meaning. He has a series called "Things of Every Day". A picture from this series - "Waiting" (1959). There is clearly some kind of dramatic story behind it. The telephone receiver lies on the windowsill, it is raining outside the window. You start fantasizing about who is now called for talking on the phone, what happened, who is calling ...

s211015-111.JPG

At the exhibition, I noticed not only visitors looking at the paintings, but also a group of senior schoolchildren or students, who together wrote something in exercise books and notepads. Obviously, they were doing some kind of task. They created a certain crowd, but it was still possible to approach the pictures.

(1976) Pimenov worked a lot as an illustrator, theater artist, film designer. A whole section of the exhibition is devoted to this. I'll show you one nifty drawing from this section. "Woman's Hand" (1976-1976). This is a sketch for the film "The Red and The Black" (1976)

Another picture from the exhibition. Some of those completing the assignment were sitting right on the floor.

I liked the exhibition very much. Perhaps I will continue the story about her later.
In addition to the main exposition, the gallery hosts several exhibitions. Lectures are arranged, practical classes, excursions are conducted. This time I only visited the exhibition of Yuri Pimenov.
A little about the organization of the service in the gallery. There is everything for the comfort of visitors. This time I turned my attention to a new cafe. There used to be a small corner, now there are a couple of large halls with tables. I left home early, so I stopped by to eat.

The gallery has a courtyard that displays examples of contemporary art. After examining the metal structure, I identified it as a sculpture of an elk (see, there are horns?) with a light in the ass. And I did not guess. This is the work of Vasilisa Lebedeva "Hut" (2021), referring to a fairytale hut on chicken legs.

It is very pleasant to walk nearby the New Tretyakov Gallery, especially in good weather. I have already shown what I saw during a walk on the day of visiting the exhibition: 1 2 3 4 5 6. And there are still some interesting photos that I hope to show.
