The afternoon of the third day of the crossing would be the icing on the cake. I was super excited because I had been looking forward to this experience ever since I embarked on this adventure. After lunch at The Crossing, we had to get back on the Icefield Parkway again for a 53 km drive that took about 40 minutes to get to what would be our last tourist stop of the day, and unlike the previous sites, this one was in Jasper National Park.

La tarde del tercer día de travesía sería algo así como la guinda del pastel. Yo estaba súper emocionado, porque había estado esperando con ansias vivir esta experiencia desde que me embarqué en esta aventura. Después de almorzar en The Crossing, tuvimos que volver otra vez a la autopista Icefield Parkway para hacer un recorrido de 53 km que duró alrededor de 40 minutos hasta llegar a la que sería nuestra última parada turística del día y, a diferencia de los sitios anteriores, éste se encontraba en el Parque Nacional Jasper.
ATHABASCA AND ANDROMEDA MOUNTAINS
And finally after three days of trekking through the majestic Canadian Rockies, we began to make out from the road, the Athabasca and Andromeda Mountains that gloriously frame the Athabasca Glacier. With an impressive height of 3490 m and 3450 m respectively, these mountains are located, the first, in Jasper National Park and, the second, between Jasper and Banff National Parks.

Y por fin después de tres días de recorrido a través de las majestuosas rocosas de Canadá, empezamos a divisar desde la vía, los montes Athabasca y Andrómeda que enmarcan gloriosamente al Glaciar Athabasca. This part of the tour goes from point 8 at The Crossing, through the Icefield Centre, and from there to the Athabasca Glacier, which is point 9.

ICEFIELD CENTRE
Currently this site is called Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre and is the company that is in charge of offering you an adventure that will freeze you. It is a way of saying it, but the truth is that this company has all the necessary logistics to offer you an experience in the Athabasca Glacier, the heart of this part of the Canadian Rockies. From specialized vehicles to transport us to guides who explain what a glacier is, how they are formed and what we might find, as well as all the safety instructions to make the most of the snow, cold and polar environment.
ICEFIELD CENTRE
Actualmente este sitio se llama Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre y es la compañía que se encarga de ofrecerte una aventura que te helará. Es una manera de decirlo, pero lo cierto es que esta empresa tiene toda la logística necesaria para brindarte una experiencia en el Glaciar Athabasca, corazón de esta parte de las rocosas canadienses. Desde vehículos especializados para transportarnos hasta guías que explican qué es un glaciar, cómo se forman y qué podríamos encontrarnos, así como todas las instrucciones de seguridad para poder disfrutar al máximo de la nieve, el frío y un ambiente polar.

In the vicinity of the Icefield Centre, there was an open-air museum of sorts. In the photo, I am standing next to an old snowmobile. The airtight design and the tank-like tracked wheels stand out.

This bus reminded me of the one I used to take to school when I was a kid, but this one does it on snow. Imagine gliding across the glacier using this mode of transportation.

These are the modern vehicles that are currently used to climb the glacier. When I saw them, I could not resist the temptation to ride on one of their wheels.

ICE EXPLORER
Because the topography of the terrain we would be traveling over is very rugged, it is forbidden to go up in private vehicles, and instead, there are some very rare giant vehicles called Ice Explorers. I had never seen before this kind of six-wheeled caterpillar bus that is specially built to go over the kind of surface we intended to visit. The wheels are about 170 cm high and the fact that they had to deploy a ladder to the ground in order to climb up, give you an idea of how tall these vehicular monsters are.
ICE EXPLORER
Debido a que la topografía del terreno que transitaríamos es muy escabrosa, está prohibido subir en vehículos particulares y, en su lugar, existen unos vehículos gigantes muy raros llamados Ice Explorer. Nunca antes había visto esta especie de autobús-oruga de seis ruedas que son especialmente construidos para pasar por el tipo de superficie que pretendíamos visitar. Las ruedas de alrededor de 170 cm de alto y el hecho de que debían desplegar una escalera hasta el piso para poder subir, dan una idea de lo altos de estos monstruos vehiculares.

After our guide made all the preparations for the purchase of tickets, a little after 2:30 pm we left to live this unique experience.
Right: The guide for this part of the expedition gave us several recommendations for a smooth visit. He emphasized to us the caution notice that was on the unit: ˝This excursion involves steep slopes, rough roads, lateral movements and sudden stops˝. The back-and-forth was incredible inside the Ice Explorer. We had to hold on tight to avoid any bumps.
Después de que nuestra guía hiciera todos los preparativos para la adquisición de tickets, un poco después de las 2:30 pm partimos para vivir esta experiencia única.

Inside the Ice Explorer is very much like a bus, but the movement makes it impressively unstable. The roof is made of glass, which creates a warmer internal environment, similar to that of a greenhouse.

The road sign shows that there are two ways to reach the glacier. For the more adventurous, with experience in these latitudes, they can go up through a trail and, for most tourists, through specialized vehicles by road.

Already on the mountain's own land, there was a base camp with more Ice Explorer units.

Large crevasses showed the danger of the site. The guides were very emphatic about this because if we did not follow their indications we could put ourselves in danger. Some tourists have lost their lives because they ventured beyond the area intended for tourism.

ATHABASCA GLACIER
To give you an idea of my excitement, I am a Latino from a tropical country where there are only two seasons, one rainy and one sunny. Until that moment, at the age of 33, I had never been in a place with snow and the great thing is that my first experience was in this inhospitable and frightening place. The trip in the Ice Explorer barely lasted 20 minutes and we were already in the part of the glacier where we were told it was safe to explore. There were also signs indicating how far we could safely go.
GLACIAR ATHABASCA
Para que tengan una idea de mi emoción: yo soy latino, de un país tropical donde solamente existen dos temporadas, una lluviosa y otra soleada. Hasta ese momento, a la edad de 33 años jamás había estado en un lugar con nieve y lo grandioso es que mi primera experiencia fue en este inhospito y atemorizante sitio. El viaje en el Ice Explorer apenas duró 20 minutos y ya estábamos en la parte del glaciar donde nos dijeron, era seguro explorar. Igualmente había señalizaciones que nos indicaban hasta dónde podíamos llegar sin peligro alguno.
Of course I threw myself on the ground, I had to experience all the possible sensations of the place such as the ice, the humidity, the cold and the glare of the sun that was dazzling. That's why I put on my glasses during my stay there.
Por supuesto que me lancé al piso, debía experimentar todas las posibles sensaciones del lugar como el hielo, la humedad, el frío y el resplandor del sol que era deslumbrante. Por eso me puse los lentes durante mi permanencia allí.
But like everything in this journey, the visit lasted only 40 minutes. However, this great experience was one of the most interesting I have ever experienced. It was really worth it.

Back inside the Ice Explorer on the way back to the Icefield Centre. Again the back and forth and I remember that I hit my forehead because I didn't hold on when I started.

I felt like an astronaut passing through the moon as I went up and down the glacier on this bizarre vehicle. The barren surface of the mountain, devoid of ice, exposes a gray, bleak and lifeless landscape. It is both thrilling and terrifying to be in this place.

An hour later, at 4:00 pm. We were back at the Icefield Centre and from there we returned to the road again. A little wet and a little cold but with the feeling of having lived an intense experience and that it had been worth the adventure.

We continued on the Icefield Parkway until we reached the town of Jasper and there we changed to the Yellowhead Highway and then took the Southern Yellowhead to the town of Valemount. After more than two hours of driving we arrived at the third abode where we would spend the night, the Valemount Vacation Inn. An inexpensive 2-star hotel.
Continuamos por la Icefield Parkway hasta llegar al pueblo de Jasper y allí cambiamos a la autopista Yellowhead y luego tomamos la Southern Yellowhead hasta el pueblo de Valemount. Después de más de dos horas de viaje llegamos a la tercera morada donde pernoctaríamos, el Valemount Vacation Inn. Un hotel económico de 2 estrellas.
Exhausted from the intense trip of the last 3 days, we did not go out that night. And as the gastronomic offer was not abundant, we ended up eating at a fast food franchise named A&W, which was totally unknown to me, but happily the hamburgers we ate were very good, I must say.
To cap off the day we gathered at a small outdoor bonfire in the middle of the parking lot and mingled with the other members of the group over roasted marshmallows and cookie. Another culinary delight that was unknown to me until then.
Agotado del intenso viaje de los últimos 3 días, esa noche no salimos. Y cómo la oferta gastronómica no era abundante, terminamos comiendo en una franquicia de comida rápida de nombre A&W para mí era totalmente desconocida, pero felizmente las hambuerguesas que nos comimos eran muy buenas, debo decirlo.
Como colofón del día nos reunimos en una pequeña fogata al aire libre en medio del estacionamiento y departimos con los demás miembros del grupo con malvaviscos asados y galleta. Otra delicia culinaria que me era desconocida hasta entonces.
Recommendations for visiting the Rockies
- The tour I took was through a tour company that offers transfer, lodging, and tour guide services. If you are visiting Canada I advise you to pay for this type of service, because they will take you to the best places and you will forget about having to deal with complex logistics.
- Take appropriate warm clothes and gloves, even if it is summer. The cold is extreme, especially at night. I remember the first night in Banff I had to walk about eight blocks back to the hotel and the temperature had dropped to 0˚C. It really was very difficult to walk in those conditions and only in the sweater I have in the pictures.
- Forget about heels or casual shoes. Wear comfortable shoes and if they are for hiking even better.
- Take your camera. It is indispensable. Also, remember to recharge the batteries the night before and, if you can, take two or more memory cards. You don't want to run out of space to take pictures or run out of battery at the most important moment of the trip.
Recomendaciones para visitar las Rocallosas
- El tour que realicé fue a través de una compañía turística que ofrece el servicio de traslado, hospedaje y guía turístico. Si están de visita en Canadá les aconsejo que paguen por este tipo de servicios, porque los llevarán a los mejores lugares y se olvidarán de tener que lidiar con complejas logísticas.
- Lleva abrigo y guantes apropiados, aunque sea verano. El frío es extremo sobretodo en las noches. Recuerdo que la primera noche en Banff tuve que caminar como ocho cuadras de regreso al hotel y la temperatura había bajado a 0˚C. Realmente fue muy difícil caminar en esas condiciones y sólo con el sweater que tengo en las fotografías.
- Olvídate de los tacones o zapatos casuales. Lleva zapatos cómodos y si son para hacer senderismo mejor.
- Lleva tu cámara. Es indispensable. Además recuerda recargar las baterías la noche anterior y, si puedes, lleva dos o más tarjetas de memoria. No querrás quedarte sin espacio para tomar fotos o sin batería en el momento más importante del viaje.
