Halloween is almost coming and I just can't wait for the Hivelloween party @HiveCebu is going to celebrate and I certainly cannot wait to dress up!

But then, as usual, I was wondering about tons of things, and questions suddenly popped out of nowhere. Questions such as "Where was Halloween originally from", "why do we dress up", "how long has it been celebrated", and "why do we celebrate it?"

The Origin of Halloween

Halloween’s origins date goes way back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced as sow-in)

The Celts, who existed 2,000 years ago, mostly in the space that is now called Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. Some people believe that the barriers between the physical world and the spirit world break down during Samhain, allowing interaction between humans and "beings of the Otherworld".

Celts thought that the presence of the supernatural souls made it easier for the Celtic priests, to make predictions. Because people were solely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were a great source of comfort during the long, dark winter.

Why do we wear costumes?

To commemorate the Samhain event, people gathered around to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. Throughout the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, consisting of animal heads and skins, and tried to tell each other’s fortunes. This explains how it is now adapted in modern times and it is crazy how this ancient tradition has evolved over the years.

History of Trick-or-Treating

In the late 1800s, there was a move in America to mold Halloween into a holiday more about community and sociable get-togethers than about ghosts, pranks, and witchcraft.

At the crossing of the century, Halloween parties for both children and adults became a well-known way to celebrate the day. Parties concentrated on games, foods of the season, and festive costumes. Adults were encouraged by newspapers and district leaders to take anything “frightful” or “scary” out of Halloween celebrations. Because of these exercises, Halloween lost most of its superstitious and religious connotations by the start of the twentieth century.

All these years of celebrating this event and thirteen years later I finally know its origin. How about you, did you know Halloween's origin before you stumbled upon this blog? comment down below!😄

Well, I guess that wraps it up for today folks
Hope you'll have a great day ahead hivers!
Peace out✌️
