Heeding the call of the @freewriterhouse, I'm signing up for this contest which is more of a creative challenge of sorts. You can know the details of this "Contest" by entering this publication: "A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words.".

We are first asked to describe what we see in the picture, followed by how it makes us feel, and to complete the post, we are given the freedom to create a poem or story based on the picture.

To keep the subject short, I begin by describing the image where we can see two people (woman and man), sitting on the bench of a (neglected) terrace while reading the newspaper with some interest. The lady seems to be not quite convinced of what the news brings her while the gentleman is probably delighted with the sports news or some literary article that caught his attention.

Before I continue with the story that inspired me when I saw this image, I will tell you that it makes me feel at peace with that inevitable moment that is old age. In the end, life turns us back into children "with knowledge, wisdom, and experience".

—¿Qué has ganado Peter?

—A ver ¿me dirás o no?

Sunday arrives again, Peter gets ready to go to the newsstand for the day's paper while Julia prepares the long-awaited morning coffee. Peter can't help but notice a group of young people sitting on the benches in the town's central square, all immersed in their mobile devices as they eat pizza, drink beer and gush with laughter.

On his way home, he takes the opportunity to stop by the grocery store to buy some coconut candies that bring back so many memories of his childhood and a couple of lottery tickets. Once home, Julia waits for him with breakfast on the table and her respective cup of coffee, they both finish their meal and in a long minute of silence, they share glances as in their first years of courtship.

As usual, every Sunday morning they go up to the terrace of the building to sunbathe and read the newspaper, Peter went directly to the daily horoscope page to see what the forecast for the day would bring. Julia, on the other hand, was reading the recent news about the riots in the city and could not help but sketch a comment of disgust —These bore faces, they think they are going to change the world with their impertinence! —.

Peter could not help but react to such a comment and replied —At least the horoscope says that good news is coming today —.

—For God's sake, Peter Anthony, if you continue to pay attention to those horoscope messages you will end up in a madhouse instead of an old people's home —said Julia.

—At least I know I'll be a happy madman —he replied sarcastically, smiling to himself.

They both continued their reading without giving importance to those crossed words, in one of the pages Julia saw the offers on cell phones and while she was thinking she said to Peter:

—We should invest in one of those devices to read the news and not have to leave the house —.

—No way, who needs one of those; I'm happy to leave the house for my newspaper —Peter chuckled in reply.

He immediately remembered the coconut candy and the tickets he bought before coming home, still in one of his pants pockets. He pulled out two pieces of candy and the tickets, handed one piece of candy to Julia, and asked her to scratch off one of those tickets.

—No way! —Peter shouted excitedly as he looked at his ticket with a surprised face and used a nickel to scratch it off.

—What did you win Peter? —asked Julia expectantly at the news of a prize.

—I told you, Julia! —Peter said over and over again, still stunned.

—Will you tell me or not? —Julia replied, somewhat annoyed by the suspense.

—I've won one of those new generation phones, it looks like one of those that do everything by voice —she said with a restrained smile —You see, the horoscope isn't wrong —she continued.

—And what will you do with it? —Julia asked ironically —Weren't you the one who said there was no need for one of those devices? —He concludes.

Peter takes the newspaper again but this time to take it to the nearest recycling center. Julia decides to go to the park to feed the pigeons and as they both stand up, Peter takes her by the hand and looking her in the eyes says:

—It doesn't matter that at this point we change our routine because at the end of everything all I want is to be by your side until I die —.

—Peter, I love you as much or more than you love me —Julia says —and whether we read the newspaper in the newsstand or on a cell phone, I want to read it with you —she finishes.
