Hace poco más de dos semanas recibí un mensaje con una información acerca de un concurso de dibujo regional para jóvenes entre 12 y 20 años. Este año estuvo concurrido con el montón de cosas académicas que tuve que hacer por lo que me perdí de varios concursos dado mi poco tiempo disponible, pero ahora que estoy libre de todo eso, decidí participar.
En las bases del concurso se pedía representar la esencia de la cultura indígena de la época precolombina de la región: los indios guaqueríes (en honor a la celebración del día de los guaiqueríes). No me pareció un tema complicado, en realidad no sabía mucho sobre esta etnia pero tras pasar gran parte de la mañana investigando, pude armar un repertorio mental de ideas para el dibujo.
Lo que me gustó de este concurso es que tenía libertad creativa para hacer el dibujo (girando en torno a representar la identidad guaiquerí, por supuesto), pero básicamente podía reflejar lo que conozco acerca de ellos y también añadir elementos con simbologías un poco más universales sobre los indios, a la vez que podía usar cualquier estilo de dibujo que quisiera y también cualquier material.
Empecé el boceto sobre la hoja del block de acuarelas con un lápiz claro. Dividí la hoja en una cruz para mantener la composición visualmente equilibrada y traté de no borrar demasiado (lo cual me fue algo complicado ya que había cosas que no salían como yo quería). Logré hacer el boceto casi en tiempo récord para empezar a pintar.
Pido disculpas por la calidad de mierda de la foto, pero eran las 9 de la noche y la iluminación no era la mejor.
Anteriormente había hecho un boceto rápido para estudiar qué colores iba a disponer en el dibujo final, así que una vez elegidos empecé a pintar con colores base en cada espacio y figura que lo requería.
Tomé apoyo de los lápices de colores acuarelables para trazar algunas líneas que luego difuminaría con el pincel y conforme iba avanzando añadía algunos matices y texturas como el de las hojas de los árboles y los reflejos de luz en el cabello.
Finalmente después de pintar la canoa, las flores y detallar un poco más la forma de los cuerpos de los peces, di por terminada mi obra y la firmé.
Tenia cierto temor de no poder entregar a tiempo, anoche se fue el servicio eléctrico en la zona donde vivo y para no perder el tiempo (supuse que no volvería en un buen rato) tomé mi teléfono y alumbré con la lámpara. Pintar rodeada de oscuridad fue todo un desafío pero gracias a ello pude avanzar muchísimo con el dibujo.
Finalmente, hoy envié la foto del dibujo y la ficha técnica por correo electrónico, los resultados serán anunciados en una semana, (envíenme buenas vibras para que me vaya bien :)).
Todo los elementos que incluí en esta obra tiene una simbología o hace referencia a algo, por ejemplo, los colores predominantes (amarillo, azul y verde) tienen relación con los colores de la bandera regional, también incorporé algunos elementos representativos de la región como una cotorra sentada en una rama de una árbol y una flor de cayena cuyo color me parece que contrasta bien con los colores que la rodean. En sus manos sostiene una gran perla referencia a una de las principales riquezas que la Isla de Margarita una vez tuvo (antes que los colonos explotaran su importación). Por último, una de las simbologías principales dentro de mi dibujo, es en relación a la figura protagonista de mi dibujo: una india guaiquerí, una mujer que representa la naturaleza, la fertilidad, y también se muestra como madre de la vida marina.
Estoy agotada tras dedicarme varias horas seguidas a hacer esta obra pero muy feliz con el resultado. Es todo por hoy, nos vemos muy pronto por acá.:)

A little over two weeks ago I received a message with some information about a regional drawing contest for young people between 12 and 20 years old. This year was busy with a lot of academic things I had to do so I missed several contests given my limited time available, but now that I am free of all that, I decided to participate.
The rules of the contest asked to represent the essence of the indigenous culture of the pre-Columbian era of the region: the Guaquerí Indians (in honor of the celebration of the Guaquerí day). It didn't seem like a complicated topic, I didn't really know much about this ethnic group but after spending most of the morning researching, I was able to put together a mental repertoire of ideas for the drawing.
What I liked about this contest is that I had creative freedom to make the drawing (revolving around representing the Guaiquerí identity, of course), but basically I could reflect what I know about them and also add elements with a bit more universal symbologies about the Indians, while I could use any style of drawing I wanted and also any material.
I started the sketch on the watercolor block sheet with a light pencil. I divided the sheet into a cross to keep the composition visually balanced and tried not to erase too much (which was a bit tricky as there were things that didn't come out the way I wanted). I managed to do the sketch almost in record time to start painting.
I apologize for the crappy quality of the photo, but it was 9 o'clock at night and the lighting was not the best.
I had previously done a quick sketch to study what colors I was going to have in the final drawing, so once they were chosen I started painting with base colors in each space and figure that required it.
I took support from the watercolor pencils to draw some lines that I would then blur with the brush and as I progressed I added some nuances and textures such as the leaves of the trees and the light reflections in the hair.
Finally, after painting the canoe, the flowers and detailing a little more the shape of the fishes' bodies, I finished my work and signed it.
I had some fear of not being able to deliver on time, last night the power went out in the area where I live and not to waste time (I assumed that I would not be back for a while) I took my phone and lit with the lamp. Painting in the dark was a challenge but thanks to this I was able to make a lot of progress with the drawing.
Finally, today I sent the photo of the drawing and the technical sheet by email, the results will be announced in a week, (send me good vibes for the best :)).
All the elements that I included in this work have a symbolism or make reference to something, for example, the predominant colors (yellow, blue and green) are related to the colors of the regional flag, I also incorporated some representative elements of the region as a parrot sitting on a tree branch and a cayenne flower whose color seems to me that contrasts well with the colors that surround it. In her hands she holds a large pearl, a reference to one of the main riches that Margarita Island once had (before the colonists exploited its import). Finally, one of the main symbologies within my drawing, is in relation to the main figure of my drawing: a Guaiquerí Indian, a woman who represents nature, fertility, and is also shown as the mother of marine life.
I am exhausted after dedicating several hours in a row to this work, but very happy with the result. That's all for today, see you soon :)
