Wednesday Walk to the Peter and Paul Fortress

We have gray and gloomy weather yesterday, and today. This weather is not very suitable for a pleasant walk, the scenery looks bleak, the sky is covered by clouds very densely, the cold wind tries to get under the jacket and take away the remnants of heat. But it's not hot! After suffering from the heat above +35℃ this summer, I have become much more tolerant of the cold and gloomy weather.

The top shot shows the place where I started my walk. I went to the pier to take a picture of the Neva River panorama, and a touring steamer was just coming in to anchor. The navigation of tourist boats will be over in a few days, it's getting too cold for such walks.

I decided to take a little walk along the Neva River embankment. At first I was going to walk along the Palace Embankment just a little bit, but gradually I got carried away and my mood came into balance with the calm and majestic scenery. So first I decided to walk to the next bridge, then I wanted to cross that bridge, and then I turned to the Peter and Paul Fortress and finished the walk only when it got dark.

I entered the Peter and Paul Fortress over the St. John's Bridge. This bridge has a complicated and interesting history. It could be called St. Petersburg's first bridge, but it would be more correct to say that this bridge is in the same place where the first bridge was located. The design of the first bridge was very different, it was a pontoon bridge. This bridge has a wooden sidewalk near the Kronverk embankment, but the part closer to the entrance gate of the fortress is paved with paving stones.

A small exhibition of different mirror figures is located on the square between the St. John's Gate and the Petrovsky Gate. The authors of the installation believe that they built from these figures a silver necklace of Russia.

There are always a lot of tourists in the Peter and Paul Fortress, but in this weather there were fewer than usual, and all the tourists were walking in the center of the fortress, near the Peter and Paul Cathedral. When I turned into the narrow streets near the fortress wall, I was immersed in an atmosphere of peace and quiet. It seemed that around the next corner I would see the sentry who had been on duty here since Peter the Great's time, or at least hear his footsteps.

I emerged from the fortress at dusk. It was dark under the archway that led through the fortress wall to the street.
