World Whale 🐳 and Dolphin 🐬 Day. (ESP/ENG)

Bienvenidos a mi blog.png

A few days ago was celebrated the International Day of the Vaquita, a porpoise that is critically endangered, so I dedicated a few lines to raise awareness of this unique animal and also to show the conditions that threaten its existence, But this is not the only date in the month of July in which a marine specimen is celebrated because today July 23rd is celebrated the World Day of Whales and Dolphins, other beautiful animals, belonging to marine ecosystems and very affected by pollution, fishing, pollution and now by climate change.

Welcome to my Blog.png

This date has its origin in 1986 and was created or declared with the purpose of stopping the indiscriminate hunting of these majestic beings in danger of extinction, originally the day was called World Day Against Whaling, today known as World Whale and Dolphin Day.

In the same way, we all know that there are several specimens of whales in the oceans and that many of them were terribly affected by hunting and still are, since in some countries this practice is still allowed without taking into account the black market where some of the derivatives from the fishing of these beings are highly valued.

There is even a famous book that narrates the voyage of a ship with a blinded captain who was determined to marry the famous white whale Movi Dick, who was a Sperm Whale.

For those who do not know, whaling almost extinguished them and that is why the International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned commercial whaling in 1986, quite recently, to allow the cetacean populations to recover. But there are still places where subsistence whaling is allowed as part of their culture.

Now, among the types of whales we can mention the following:

Types of baleen whales

They are characterized because they lack teeth. Their feeding system is based on a water filter in their mouth through which they feed on small organisms that live in the water. In addition, this species of whales has 2 orifices for breathing.

Blue whale: considered the largest whales in the world.
Gray whale: they stand out for the whiskers in their mouths that allow them to detect what is going on around them.
Greenland or boreal whale: their main characteristic is their longevity and their way of hunting, similar to sharks.
Fin whale: it stands out for having a dorsal fin, 2 pectoral fins and a wide tail with a slit in the middle.
Humpback whale: it has a very characteristic hump on the dorsal fin.
Minke whale: it is the smallest of this type of whale and has very elongated dorsal fins.

Types of toothed whales

In this case, whales do have teeth that allow them to feed on fish and other mammals that inhabit the seas and oceans. These are sharp teeth that allow them to hunt, kill and cut up their prey before ingesting them. Also, unlike baleen whales, this type of whale has 1 breathing orifice.

Narwhal whale: they stand out for the long tusk that the males have in their jaw.
Pilot whale: there are two types within this species: some with short fins and others with long fins.
Right whale: its head is covered by small crustaceans that give it the appearance of having a skin full of bumps, while its nostril is V-shaped.
Sperm whale: it is the largest of the toothed whales, so it is not surprising that it is the whale with the largest fins and the animal with the largest brain size.
Beluga whale: characterized by its white color, its bulging head and its crest instead of a fin.

On the other hand, the friendly dolphins that are so well known and admired by many have also been and still are, like whales, victims of hunting, in countries like Japan there are allegorical dates for the hunting of these beautiful and intelligent mammals, as is the cruel annual dolphin slaughter carried out by the fishermen of Taji between September and April.

As for the types of dolphins, there is an incredible variety, all beautiful and with great characteristics. I share with you the link of a publication where they are mentioned and, if you do not want to, you can do your own search on the internet, you will surely find any amount of information and beautiful images of these beautiful and intelligent beings, that nowadays are even therapists.

So, my purpose in writing these lines is, first that we all remember that the danger to these wonderful beings still exists and not only comes from hunting but also from pollution and the consequences that this has brought, also I would like that everyone in one way or another, today we take a minute to spread information about whales and dolphins and why the creation of this day, the more we fight for their conservation the louder our voice will be heard.

Thank you for reading.png

In conclusion I hope that my lines will inspire you to investigate more about these beautiful animals and above all to participate in some way in their conservation, if you wish and my publication has inspired you please leave me a comment.
