I decided to risk putting an idea here at POB, it took a while to focus on literature, now and then I find a post about a book or author here but we don’t have a space dedicated to the theme as it exists in Hive communities, the Hive Book Club, which I am even a member of. But the idea is not to compete for space, because after all here is POB and I think it would be good to at least sign some tags that could grow. If it doesn’t work, okay, I’ll continue writing anyway (this is the new goal, writing even if the world catches on fire, the BTC melts, that the virus also starts to hit the machines, and that we’ll all become zombies, I’ll keep writing). And to debut this club, I chose my favorite author, and the curious fact that I can't finish reading his greatest (literally) work.

David Foster Wallace is dead. He hanged himself in 2008. That sucks. Too bad, of course. I met him late, he wasn't even alive anymore. It was my ex who told me about him, and I ended up buying her a gift. And then, amid a torpor of malaise and serious emotional problems, I ended up hearing the first fragments of her writing through her voice. I hadn't paid attention to the writer until then, even with his eccentric and creative graphic art (see photo), but on hearing such literary nonsense I had to reconsider and decide to read that book. It was practically an affront to literary standards that I was used to until then. And, at the same time, I had to immerse myself in David’s personality, read what I could about his person and try to understand why, why was he so like me? And also, why, why did he have to kill himself? These are still open questions, look at that. But, I learned a lot since that fateful year of 2018 when I met and tried to read for the first time your unique and impossible "Infinite Jest". So much so that I even wrote about it in Steemit. And what surprised you most about all this? It was the fact that even though I fell in love and identified myself completely with his writing, I simply found that I was not able to complete the reading. And no, it's not because the book is over a thousand pages long,
nor why some footnotes are longer than the book's own chapters and take whole pages for themselves, sometimes building new complex internal plots. But why did the author go much, much further than I was ready to go. And doing some research, we realized if, after all, it is not uncommon for people to not finish reading "Infinite Jest", they cannot. That's it.

Is David Foster Wallace a damn genius who played with his readers' cognitive abilities by making them give up reading? Perhaps! Did David live in a parallel reality at another speed of understanding and a strange level of humor and creativity? Yes, probably. I don't know what makes him this absurd genius who builds a story with countless characters of detailed lives and stupendous flow of consciousness, with vast knowledge in infinite parallel tabs without conflicting or falling out of his own labyrinth, but what know is that it seems to me that just like an Andy Kauffman, Wallace should be delighted yourself with your private internal joke of making a book almost unreadable. Of course, almost, why, I cannot base myself on the idea that "no one can read". In fact, a lot of people read it in its entirety, after all, this must be the desire of every author, but being able to build a book that challenges you much more than any other must be something even more special.
Now, that is here that I make it clear that we are talking about an author at the level of Dostoievski, yes. And that his novel has been hailed as one of the greatest in recent decades. The kind of work that does not appear easily in the literary market. But what does D F W write about? Well, "infinite Jest" could be cataloged as an existentialist novel or science fiction or dystopian novel or philosophical novel, perhaps a political novel or a psychological novel? It is at the discretion of the reader, it depends on which chapter you are in, and at what level is the dive you took. I'm going to try to talk a little bit about what the book is about, so it never hurts to try.

Brazilian edition of the book
In an unspecified future, spent in Boston, we see a range of themes overlapping and gaining depth through the story of countless characters. Part of the theme involves cinema and an absurd director who created the film "Infinite Jest", we have the journey of some semi-professional tennis players and every possible analogy with human existence seen through a court and a game of tennis, we still have chemical-dependent characters, oscillating between rehabilitation and drug abuse, we have researchers, and all this counted from non-linear shape, complexly pasted through more than three hundred footnotes with even notes on footnotes, so that calling Infinite Jest a challenger is a mere nickname. Not by chance, many consider it a "postmodern encyclopedic novel".
That's all I can say about the author, by the way, no. I'll say one more thing. Perhaps many have been baited into the world of D F Wallace through his famous reading of "This is water" that he made in a graduation speech. And he even entered one of his smaller books, which are compendiums of tales or fragments as
schizophrenic as his great work. And I think this is the perfect example of something that everyone is worth seeing, whether or not they go after your thousand-page book. Fortunately, we have a good video version of that speech, and I advise everyone to watch it, it is something to add to your life. David Foster Wallace is a painful loss, regardless of how many years he will be gone, I will always feel that we have lost one of the greatest literary geniuses ever born on earth.

Decidi arriscar de emplacar uma ideia aqui no POB, já demorou para darmos um foco na literatura, vez ou outra eu encontro algum post sobre algum livro ou autor por aqui mas não temos um espaço dedicado ao tema tal qual existe nas comunidades do Hive, como o Hive Book Club, que inclusive sou membro. Mas a ideia não é disputar espaço, até por que afinal de contas aqui é o POB e acho que seria bom ao menos firmar algumas tags que poderiam crescer. Se não der certo, tudo bem, eu continuarei escrevendo de qualquer forma (essa é a nova meta, escrever mesmo que o mundo pegue fogo, que o btc derreta, que o virus comece a atingir também as máquinas e que viraremos todos zumbis, seguirei escrevendo). E pra estrear esse clube, eu escolhi meu autor preferido, e o curioso fato de que não consigo terminar de ler sua maior (literalmente) obra.

David Foster Wallace está morto. Se enforcou em 2008. Isso é uma merda. Uma pena também, é claro. Eu o conheci tardiamente, ele nem era mais vivo. Foi minha ex que me falou sobre ele, e eu acabei comprando de presente pra ela. E então em meio a um torpor de mal estar e sérios problemas emocionais acabei ouvindo os primeiros fragmentos de sua escrita através da voz dela. Eu não tinha dado atenção ao escritor até então, mesmo com sua excêntrica e criativa arte gráfica (vide foto), mas ao escutar tamanho absurdo literário eu tive que reconsiderar e decidir por ler aquele livro. Era praticamente uma afronta aos padrões literários que até então eu estava acostumado. E, concomitantemente, eu tive de mergulhar na personalidade de David, ler o que poderia sobre sua pessoa e tentar entender por que, por que é que ele era tão parecido comigo? E também, por que, por que ele teve de se matar?
São perguntas ainda em aberto, vejam só. Mas, aprendi muito desde aquele fatídico ano de 2018 quando conheci e tentei ler pela primeira vez seu, inigualável e impossível "Graça Infinita". Tanto é que até escrevi sobre ele no Steemit. E o que mais surpreendeu de tudo isso? Foi o fato de que mesmo eu tendo me apaixonado e me identificado completamente pela sua escrita, eu simplesmente descobri que não era capaz de concluir a leitura. E não, não é por que o livro tem mais de mil páginas, nem por que algumas notas de rodapé são maiores que os próprios capítulos do livro e tomam páginas inteiras para si, as vezes construindo novas tramas complexas internas. Mas por que o autor foi muito, muito mais longe do que eu estava pronto para ir. E pesquisando um pouco, percebe-se que afinal de contas não é raro acontecer de as pessoas não terminarem de ler "Graça Infinita", não conseguem. É isso.

David Foster Wallace é um gênio maldito que brincava com a capacidade cognitiva dos seus leitores os fazendo desistir da leitura? Talvez! David vivia numa realidade paralela em outra velocidade de compreensão e num nível estranho de humor e criatividade? Sim, provavelmente. Eu não sei o que faz dele esse gênio absurdo que constrói uma história com inúmeros personagens de vidas detalhadas e fluxo de consciência estupendos, com um conhecimento vasto em infinitas abas paralelas sem conflitar-se ou desentender-se de seu próprio labirinto, mas o que sei é que me parece que tal qual um Andy Kauffman, Wallace devia deleitar-se com sua piada interna particular de fazer um livro quase ilegível. Claro, quase, por que, não posso basear em mim a ideia de que "ninguém consegue ler". Na verdade muita gente leu inteiro, afinal, esse deve ser o desejo de todo autor, mas ser capaz de construir um livro que desafia muito mais que qualquer outro deve ser algo mais especial ainda.
É nessa parte do texto que eu deixo claro que estamos falando de um autor do nível de Dostoievski, sim. E que o seu romance tem sido aclamado como um dos maiores das últimas décadas. O tipo de trabalho que não aparece facilmente no mercado literário. Mas afinal sobre o que escreve D F W? Bem, Graça Infinita poderia ser catalogado como romance existencialista ou ficção científica ou romance distópico ou romance filosófico, quem sabe um romance político ou seria um romance psicológico? Fica a critério do leitor, depende de que capítulo você está, e em qual nível está o mergulho que você deu. Eu vou tentar falar um pouco sobre do que trata o livro então, não custa tentar.

Num futuro não especificado, passado em Boston, vemos uma gama de temas se sobrepondo e ganhando profundidade através da história de inúmeros personagens. Parte do tema envolve o cinema e um diretor absurdo que criou o filme "Graça Infinita", temos a jornada de alguns tenistas semiprofissionais e toda analogia possível com a existência humana vista através de uma quadra e de um jogo de tênis, temos ainda personagens dependentes químicos, oscilando entre reabilitação e uso abusivo de drogas, temos investigadores, e tudo isso contado de forma não linear, complexamente colado através de mais de trezentas notas de rodapé com inclusive notas sobre notas de rodapé, de forma que chamar Graça Infinita de desafiador é um mero apelido. Não por acaso, muitos o consideram como um "Romance enciclopédico pós-moderno".
Isso é tudo que posso dizer sobre o autor, aliás, não. Vou falar mais uma coisa. Talvez muitos tenham sido iscados para o mundo de D F Wallace através de sua famosa leitura de "Isso é água" que fez em um discurso de formatura. E inclusive entrou para um de seus livros menores que são compêndios de contos ou fragmentos tão esquizo quanto sua grande obra. E acho que esse é o exemplo perfeito de algo que vale a pena todos verem, indiferente se vão ou não atrás do seu livro de mil páginas. Felizmente temos uma boa versão em vídeo desse discurso, e aconselho a todos a assistirem, é algo a acrescentar na vida de vocês. David Foster Wallace é uma perda dolorosa, indiferente de quantos anos fará que ele se foi, sempre vou sentir que perdemos um dos maiores gênios literários já nascidos na terra.
