Pob word of the week: invictus

At every moment of our lives, we are at war. This war may be from an external force or within ourselves. But we have to be undefeated to be living or successful.

However, the war in life have many phases. What I mean to say is that, the challenges people face are peculiar to them at each point in time. What you feel is a minor challenge to you, have defeated someone to the point that he commit suicide. Life is not a bed of roses, where one get want he wants. We fight for what we want. And that means remaining invictus to the challenges that comes our way

There is this man in the area where i stay, he does menial job for survival. After a year of marriage to his wife, his wife gave birth to quadruplet, the responsibility became much for him, he felt he can not face his challenges anymore, he ran and left his wife and three new born babies. He allowed the challenges he was facing defeat him. And I have heard of people who faced the same situation as his, but remain unconquered by the challenges and at the long end, came out victorious.

During the last year covid 19 pandemic, I heard a minister in one of the powerful country committed suicide for his inability to curtail the pandemic. Sometime, accepting that you are at fault or failed is not defeat but victory, because accepting your fault mean you are ready to make amends and continue facing the challenge ahead of you to reach victory. Escapism in form of suicide is defeat. To be invictus, you have to accept mistakes and make amend to continue fighting with better and more experience skill.

I once visited my father in his office, he was a police officer, working in the commissioner's office. I went there to collect some money for my school. After I had presented the list of items I needed for my school to him, he was still scrutinizing the items to know the ones that were necessary and those ones that can be discarded, which was typical of him, That the commissioner stormed into his office, " you are very stupid Mr Felix, you are mad to keep me waiting" the commissioner yelled and lay abuses on my father. My father stand there saying yes sir, yes sir while standing still. At a point in his life, he even contemplate quitting the job, but he knew that was a challenge that he needed to defeat in order to be able to feed his family, he remain invictus till his retirement.

Challenges are parts of life, so, one need to be invictus in character and will in a world that is filled with struggles.
