How I carry out a mixed system of farming

HELLO HIVE

Owing to the painful fact that I don't have just enough farm land to plant all the crops that I desire, I have decided to be using the not so popular multi or mixed system of farming.

Farmers in my region use this system To maximize the use of the land available to them or in other cases where there are pest and rodents disturbing the farm.

It might look good but is also quite tricky as you would have to ascertain the kinds of crops that can grow together on the same land without one harming or hindering the others grows which is more like a compatibility test for plants.

An example is when you try to plant a tropical creeping crop together like sweet potatoes and with another creeping crop like fluted pumpkin, they would not be able to grow together even though they might look at the start but their yield would be reduced drastically as they would end up entangling each which would prevent both crops from enjoying the desired space and nutrients they need.

In another case a tropical creeping crop and a plant that grows up towards the sky like maize would be perfectly compatible even though they still share the available nutrients their impact on each other will be minimal.

Another example is casava and maize even the direction of their grow is the same the are still good together since the time they use for growth and maturity are different.

Fluted pumpkin and maize is another good example.

My family have always tried this system since I was a boy up until now that I have grown up and it still has not failed so I am using the same system although mine is slightly different. My parents do plant the two crops at the same time but what I do is to plant it at different time with the maize coming first and when its about 3-4weeks old I would plant my sweet potatoes before the sweet potatoes begins to completely creep the maize would have gotten to maturity or even harvested.

You can also try this system since it work and there are lots and lots of combination you can make like beans and maize where the maize is also planted first and groundnuts and maize, maize has been quite a good partner cause of its quick growth and maturity compared to other crops.
